Online community colleges in Illinois offer a wide variety of associate programs targeted to help students develop in-demand skills that can apply to today’s top industries. Graduates often continue their education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree program at one of the state’s top online four-year colleges.
Our list below highlights some of the best online community colleges in Illinois. View our methodology for more details about our list, or learn more about OnlineU.
How We Rank "Best" Schools
The OnlineU research team ranks community colleges in each featured state using Salary Score, our proprietary measure of how graduates' earnings compare with those of students who earned the same associate degrees elsewhere. Using U.S. Department of Education earnings data, we compare each college's associate graduates with graduates of the same degrees nationwide, providing a degree-level perspective of financial outcomes rather than relying on institution-wide earnings.
When there isn't enough data to calculate a reliable Salary Score, we rank eligible schools by online enrollment, highlighting colleges with larger, more established distance-learning communities. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

#4 5.0 / 5 Overall Rating 100% Recommend N/A Helpful for Career McHenry County College () offers online associate degrees in accounting, administrative office management, business management, and network security but is most noted for its online associate degree in general studies. Through distance education, students can also earn certificates and transfer degrees that prepare them for earning a bachelor's degree at a four-year institution. Online certifications are available in accounting, bookkeeping, entrepreneurship, and tax practitioner. Why we like them: Pricey tuition can deter many students from applying for online programs. Fortunately, MCC offers several scholarship opportunities for online students. Students are eligible for 50 scholarships provided by the school as well as government financial aid. These resources help make higher education more accessible to a wider range of individuals, regardless of their financial circumstances. 1 Student Review for Associate Degrees Bri, Graduated 2014 Overall Rating: 5/5 McHenry County College offered a great kick-start to my continued education. I achieved my Associate in Science degree in 19 months and walk in the door at the University with Junior standing. MCC offered a cost-effective way for me to complete my Gen... Read More
#5 3.91 / 5 Overall Rating 100% Recommend 100% Helpful for Career Sauk Valley Community College () offers a few online certificate and degree options for interested applicants. Students who want to eventually earn a bachelor’s degree might choose an associate transfer degree with a general education core curriculum. This is ideal for taking care of bachelor’s-degree prerequisites so students can start taking major classes right away at a four-year college. Other options include Associate of Applied Science in fields like management, marketing, and accounting, or a customizable degree in liberal studies. Why we like them: SVCC’s website makes it easy to choose the right online learning option. It lays out the differences between a transfer degree, a career degree, and a certificate program and helpfully guides readers to the correct application for each, along with more information. Although it’s not a hugely diverse school, 18% of SVCC students identify as Hispanic or Latinx, which might appeal to prospective students from this population. 1 Student Review for Associate Degrees other, Graduated 2012 Overall Rating: 5/5 The application, financial, and course selection processes were relatively simple. After the first semester, most "office" tasks can be completed online so you do not have to schedule multiple meeting each semester to maintain enrollment. This was helpful... Student Reviews of Online Associate ProgramsStaff is very helpful and understanding… I was able to understand everything I was being taught and if I didn’t understand anything it was easy to get in contact with someone to help me with what I needed. I took other online courses and felt I wasn’t getting the education I needed and I wasn’t really learning anything. Review Date: 8/15/2023 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: Yes Liked this school at first but now I am taking some of the courses and the material does not match the tests. I do not know where they are getting their info for the tests. It is not always provided so I end up getting like a 75 or 85 around there on my tests. Also, I have been out of work and they will on differ my payments for two months and that is it. I am still out of a job and can not make my payments. I don't feel like I am even learning anything that is really going to help me. Seems really... The staff have been very helpful, but I will say that there were some that need more social skills. I truly have nothing bad to say about the school. If you plan on going back to school online, I would highly recommend UMA. Don't join though if you are not equally balanced within yourself. Review Date: 11/21/2017 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: No This was the best decision I've made. UMA was awesome. The staff was great and the classes were pretty easy. I graduated with a 4.0. I've seen some negative comments about calls and emails...well answering your phone or email is not a requirement. They are just calling to encourage you. They are a great support system for those that don't have any during the course of time. Make your choice based on what's good for you!! Review Date: 7/26/2017 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: Yes This school only cares about money. The students bring in income and as long as they get your money they could care less about you and your needs. Graduated with Honors and they treat you like crap. I keep requesting to talk to someone who can help and I get transferred back and forth between 3 departments. Over this! Review Date: 5/31/2017 Would Recommend: No Helpful for Career: No Omg I loved this school one teacher gave me the lpesr possible grade on everything but I passed! I got a job in my field within 3 months of graduation I would recommend this school to anyone, I'm a single mom of 4 it worked with my schedule did it at my pace.I'm thinking about switching to another college for my bachelors though . not sure yet, currently weighing my options, pros and cons Review Date: 5/23/2016 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: Yes Alright, so here's the bottom line; if you want to further your career and education, it's a good school. No, it is not a top notch University. Obviously that's not what you're looking for, or you wouldn't be reading this. Am I right? It's so cheap, you don't even need financial aid. I hear people complain about not getting their diploma until the school is paid for? Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Other colleges require full payment before starting the semester. Ashworth does not. If you want to... Read More Review Date: 1/9/2015 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: No I would never talk badly about a school if I didn't truly feel like it was horrible. I've previously posted about Grays Harbor College, but I want it to be known not to waste your time there. I have had the worst experience attending GHC. In the Fall of 2015, I started taking courses with Grays Harbor College. I didn't have many issues my first quarter. In Winter 2016, I had many issues. Although I achieved 2 A's (4.0) that quarter, I was "mysteriously dropped" from a class and it took the staff... I obtained my degree online and you seriously have to do your share of work when you're online. Classes were fast paced and challenging even for my level of experience. I was able to apply previous college credits from another university and my knowledge in a foreign language to pass a test for credit in language arts. My academic advisers were absolutely fantastic in meeting my personal needs and went beyond my expectations in helping me graduate quickly... Subject on point and knowledge through out the campus. Just wish it would be somewhat better and changes though out the degree plans. Offer product for such as tools for all parties Review Date: 4/12/2022 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: No After being initially unsure about online colleges in general, I must say that after completing my network/security program at ABTU, I can't envision doing it any other way. ABTU has a pleasantly unique set up that allows weekly live web communication and screen sharing between classmates and instructors, eliminating the feeling of learning all by yourself . The program really helped me get the knowledge I needed, that eventually led me into the network admin position at my work. The staff and after... Had a few snafus with student services but they were all resolved. All my books arrive promptly and I have really enjoyed the program Textbooks are up to date and instructors are an email/phone call away. Try it you won't regret it. It has helped me in my career as a cop as well. Review Date: 2/9/2013 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: Yes I've beena attending Ashworth since 2006, I've graduated from Ashworth with four Career Diplomas in Forensic Science, Private Investigation, Computer Repair, all with Honors, and another in Locksmithing. The Associates degree I earned from them was in Criminal Justice w/Honors. I am currently taking there Undergraduate Certificate program in Computer Information Management just cause I got it for a cheap price. There student services in my opinion use to be better than today, before 2010-ish, you... He is very motivational and has high hopes for his students , I have yet to start my online classes but by the looks of it I already love that the online classes provide tutoring and all other tools to help you become successful. Review Date: 12/4/2014 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: No I registered for a university when I graduated from college. Nobody checked my background to see if I had a degree or any certificates and so I was planted into Computer Engineering without the required prior IT education. I stayed for one semester, dropped out and spent the next 10 years trying to figure out how to get back in college. One day I learned that s cousin, supervisor, and two co-workers were all registered at Baker and that Baker accepts tuition assistance from my job. The Website made... I never had any technical issues or anything. The instructors were all very nice and willing to help in whatever capacity they could. I would definitely recommend San Juan to anyone who wanted a degree in the veterinary field! Review Date: 4/10/2013 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: Yes This school is by far the most fun and easy going school I’ve ever attended. Granted, it is my first program, but my experience in the last 2 terms have been very eventful. Professor go to the ends to help you understand the material. They all actually care about your well being and not only the academics. They are not boring and try to keep things spicy when there’s an ounce of anxiousness or awkwardness from a silent room. I’m looking forward to the next 6 terms. I am happy with my decision with... Your school coordinators help you out with managing classes and they help come up with a plan for the whole time you are attending. The teachers are amazing and if you are low income financial aid pays for your college so don’t fret if you have no scholarships! Review Date: 3/18/2026 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: No I graduated and passed my Boards received my Florida License and now making twice the amount of money. It was not easy, I had to work hard but it was worth it. Having a profession that I can go anywhere and get a job that has prestige. Now I treat patients in critical care units and make a real difference. ACMC gave me a new life and I will be grateful to Professor Smith for pushing me and providing the encouragement and training that now has made me a success. Review Date: 11/22/2019 Would Recommend: Yes Helpful for Career: No This school has both young and older attendants. It is very affordable at just two hundred dollars per credit hour if you're local. If you're from a little farther away then it's slightly more per credit. I like that this campus has night/evening classes and online classes for those who may work during the day.
