How We Rank "Best" Schools
The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online bachelor's in accounting degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.
We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few bachelor's in accounting qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.
We also manually research all tuition rates and include median earnings for accounting majors five years after graduation when that data is available. By presenting the most complete data available, we aim to give you an honest, well-rounded picture of each program.

What Sets This Program Apart:
- This is the #1 best online bachelor's in accounting according to students. King University has the highest review rating and a perfect recommendation rate, too.
- The cohort model moves students through a structured course sequence with the same peer group, providing a built-in professional and academic network that is less common in online accounting programs at the bachelor's level.
- Its 11:1 student-faculty ratio is the strongest in the ranking. Student reviews also mention personalized attention as one of the main highlights.
Student Review Summary: Reviews of King University are overwhelmingly favorable, driven by high ratings and near-universal recommendations. Students repeatedly praise responsive professors, attentive advisors, and success coaches who make enrollment, transfers, and financial aid unusually smooth. Many value the accelerated five-week, one-course-at-a-time format because it helps working adults and parents balance jobs, family, and school while still graduating quickly. Smaller classes, hybrid or fully online flexibility, and practical assignments are seen as career-relevant and confidence-building. Criticisms are limited but notable: some found the pace too intense for retention, occasional feedback was delayed, and a few felt tuition or workload was higher than expected.

I loved DeVry! It gave me the flexibility I needed to go to school online and work at the same time. Everyone was easy to contact and it wasn't stressful being online.
Student Review Summary: Reviews of DeVry University are sharply divided, but the overall picture skews negative because many low-rated accounts cite high tuition, confusing financial aid, poor communication, and uneven teaching quality. Students who were satisfied often valued the flexible online format, accelerated pacing, supportive advisors, and the ability to balance school with work, parenting, military service, or health issues. Several also reported promotions, salary gains, or graduate school acceptance. Detractors repeatedly said they were teaching themselves, dealing with outdated materials, weak career placement, nontransferable credits, transcript holds, and billing or veterans benefits problems that left them with heavy debt and frustration.

Stories Behind The Best Online Accounting Bachelor's Degrees: Editorial Highlights
Higher Tuition Paired With the Highest Median Earnings
University of Massachusetts Amherst
UMass Amherst has an annual tuition of $40,449, which is among the highest on the list, but its median earnings among its accounting bachelor's alumni is $99,495, the highest on the list. The university also reports an 83% graduation rate and 92% retention rate, placing it near the top of the ranking on both measures. These figures help provide students with the meaningful context they need when evaluating the best accounting degree for their investment.
An Online Accounting Degree Connected to Campus Resources
University of Arizona
UA deliberately strives to connect online accounting students with the broader Eller College of Management experience. The university states that online learners receive access to the same faculty, mentoring opportunities, career coaching, and employer network available to campus students. That matters because some online programs provide the same curriculum but fewer opportunities to build faculty relationships or connect with recruiters.
A Technology-Focused Accounting Major
California State University, East Bay
CSU - East Bay offers the ranking’s most explicitly blended accounting and analytics degree. Instead of adding a few technology electives to a conventional accounting major, the online Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Analytics presents both fields as part of one undergraduate pathway. Courses cover data visualization, accounting analytics software, database systems, and advanced accounting information systems alongside the standard accounting foundation. The degree is also positioned for students considering multiple directions, including CPA preparation, government work, nonprofit accounting, and private-sector roles.
An Accounting Leader's Advice on How an Online Accounting Degree Prepares Students for Entry-Level Jobs
How can online accounting students gain experience before graduating?
"Do what you can to get an internship in public accounting or corporate accounting, while in school. Don't wait for the degree to prove you can do the job.
A lot of hiring managers weigh a semester of real bookkeeping (even for a small business or nonprofit) more heavily than another line on a transcript. When I hire entry-level roles, work experience is on my mind and that isn't entirely fair to recent graduates, as they sometimes don't take internships or work even part time while in school.
It's also generally good advice to take internships and part-time work so that you can decide for yourself if the actual work is something you can see yourself doing long-term, and that is quite valuable."
What entry-level accounting roles are realistic for bachelor's graduates?
"[The following] are all realistic with just a bachelor's:
-
Staff accountant,
-
Accounts payable/receivable analyst,
-
Junior internal auditor,
-
Audit or tax associate roles at regional or Big 4 firms
Corporate roles (general ledger, cost accounting, payroll) are, in my experience, less prevalent for recent graduates because of where they source. (I can't recall a single corporation looking to hire a soon-to-graduate student into their corporate accounting team at Meet the Firms or any similar event.) It was nearly all public accounting firms of various size and reach."
FAQs About Choosing the Best Accounting Degrees Online
What Should You Expect From an Online Bachelor's in Accounting Program?
Accounting is a profession that's been around for centuries. Accounting practices have evolved over time; today, accounting degree programs in the U.S. teach students the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) used by organizations, banks, and regulatory agencies.
Accounting majors, whether online or in-person, typically learn standard bookkeeping practices and other accounting functions through practice. Coursework often presents students with simulated financial records and bookkeeping situations they must work through and resolve. In the process, students master the use of industry-standard accounting information systems. Undergraduate students often have the chance to specialize in areas such as taxation, forensic accounting, or management accounting.
While many courses provide a close-up view of accounting methods, other courses in an accounting curriculum ask students to step back and assess the big picture of an organization's finances. Students learn how to interpret the meaning of financial data and how the information can be used to make strategic decisions regarding revenue, expenses, assets, and liabilities.
In addition to bachelor's degree programs, students can pursue other types of accounting degrees, such as associate degrees, master's degrees, and doctorates in accounting. Undergraduates who intend to become Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) should probably plan to pursue a master's degree in accounting. Although you're not required to have a master's degree to become a CPA, you are required to have 150 credit hours of higher education (30 credits more than a bachelor's degree), which most CPA candidates achieve by earning a master's degree.
Students pursuing graduate-level degrees explore accounting concepts at a much more advanced level while also taking classes in research methods. For instance, they may study international tax regulations, professional auditing procedures, fraud, and advanced cost accounting. Additionally, graduate students complete a thesis, which often involves presenting original research on accounting theories and principles.
How Long Does It Take to Earn an Online Bachelor's in Accounting?
Bachelor's in accounting programs online require the same completion of approximately 120 credit hours as the in-person equivalent (sometimes up to 124 credits). And similarly, about half of the required courses cover general education subjects, such as literature and chemistry, while the other half are core courses and electives in accounting.
Most full-time students take four to five years to complete a program, while part-time learners may need more time. However, some schools offer accelerated online accounting programs that may take students two to three years to complete.
Some programs may require students to complete accounting internships to gain real-world experience before graduating. Externships are also recommended because they help students explore career options and potentially choose an area of specialization.
Some colleges offer accelerated online programs. With these programs, students enroll in back-to-back terms, each lasting six to eight weeks, which enables students to graduate in less than four years.
What Will You Learn in an Online Accounting Program?
While the curriculum varies based on the type of accountancy degree an individual is enrolled in, undergraduate students generally spend their first two years meeting major requirements by completing coursework in microeconomics, macroeconomics, business, and statistics. In the subsequent two years, they take professional accounting classes such as financial accounting, accounting information systems, tax law, and government accounting. During this latter period, students may also have the chance to specialize in areas such as taxation, forensic accounting, or management accounting. Most programs expect students to complete a capstone project in their final year — often in the form of a research paper or presentation — in which they apply their accountancy knowledge to a real-world scenario.
The following are some of the common online courses you may find in a typical accounting degree program:
- Auditing: Through case studies and problem sets, instructors will demonstrate how to design, apply, and evaluate an audit. Topics may include common audit standards, tests and controls, and statistical samplings.
- Corporate Taxation: This course focuses on the theories, policies, and procedures behind federal income tax. Students learn how taxation applies to corporations, estates and trusts, gifts, and partnerships, as well as how to plan in order to meet tax needs.
- Cost Accounting: Students will become familiar with the roles of accountants in areas such as decision-making, cost behavior, cost planning, and cost methods. They'll learn to see how to apply basic cost accounting concepts, using technology to develop financial deliverables, evaluate data, and communicate findings.
- Financial Management: Students are instructed on how to apply financial management analytical techniques for decision-making. Content may include formulating financial objectives and policies, planning and control, asset management, capital budgeting, and securities valuation.
Course titles may differ from school to school, but all accountancy programs are designed to meet standard learning objectives and outcomes. Core courses help you hone critical and analytical thinking skills, standard accounting procedures, and general business and communication competencies.
What Do You Need to Apply to an Online Accounting Program?
Not all colleges set the same deadlines, but in general, prospective students should submit their applications as early as the November of the year preceding the fall semester when they plan to start attending classes. While each school may require a slightly different set of documents, most require applicants to provide the following items in addition to an online application:
- Official high school or GED transcripts, usually with a minimum GPA of 2.5-3.0
- SAT or ACT scores
- A personal essay
- One to three letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches, or other mentors
- A resume or list of extracurricular activities, jobs, and volunteer activities
Which Type of Bachelor's in Accounting Is Right for You?
Students can study accounting at the associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Those pursuing a four-year undergraduate credential have additional options and can choose among several different types of accounting degrees. These degrees vary in terms of the emphasis they place on accounting theories and principles, with accounting majors typically completing different educational requirements to graduate.
Students at the bachelor's level also have the option to pursue a professional accounting degree that focuses exclusively on preparing graduates for employment in the field. Depending on their area of interest — and future career options — students may consider enrolling in one of the following accounting programs at the bachelor's level.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Accounting
- A BA covers fundamental accounting principles, introducing students to the core concepts of assets, liabilities, capital, income, and expenses. Generally considered a liberal arts degree, this credential allows students to explore arts and humanities subjects as well. Individuals may minor in subjects such as history, English, and philosophy, thus gaining a broader undergraduate education. While a BA can qualify graduates for entry-level positions in accounting, it may also prepare them for jobs in other fields depending on their choice of coursework.
Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting
- The BBA differs from a BA in that it is designed to give students a more business-focused education. Students have the option to major in accounting while taking elective coursework in business management areas such as marketing or human resources. Individuals with a BBA in accounting may graduate prepared to work in a business setting or pursue an MBA.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Accounting
- A BS is meant to give students a foundational understanding of accounting theories and how to apply these in various business and non-business settings. Unlike a BA or BBA, students enrolled in a BS program complete most of their coursework in accounting and usually take required classes in financial reporting, advanced mathematics, business, and data analysis. While they have the option to take elective classes outside these areas, students largely concentrate on studying accounting-related concepts. Graduates with a BS may be well-positioned for careers as financial analysts in many different industries.
Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc)
- The BAcc is a highly specialized degree which trains students to become professional accountants. Learners take classes exclusively in business and advanced accounting topics, and often choose a specialization such as wealth management or taxation. A BAcc is therefore considered a first professional degree that is meant to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the accounting field. It may also be a suitable option for those who are determined to gain their CPA license or want to pursue a master's in business.
What Can You Do With a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting?
Graduates with a bachelor's degree in accounting have several career options. They can move directly into the workforce as accountants or take on one of the more specialized roles in accounting, such as auditor or tax preparer. They can also move into finance roles. Those who want to become CPAs will need to continue with their education in order to meet the certification and licensure requirements. Graduates can also choose to pursue further education, whether in accounting or another field.
Many graduates go to work in one of the : public, private, government, and accounting education. The job functions are often similar but are performed for organizations with different purposes, stakeholders, and reporting obligations.
- Employees in public accounting often work with clients on a contract basis and may work for a dedicated accounting firm, such as Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, and KPMG.
- Private accountants perform financial analysis for one company or business.
- Government accountants, including state auditors, work for government agencies.
- Accountants who work in education teach, conduct research, and train students to become accountants.
Graduates may also consider one of several occupations within the field of finance. They may find employment in consulting firms, large corporations, banks, and financial institutions, working in roles such as personal financial planner, financial analyst, or chief financial officer.
Finance professionals may also want to pursue accounting and finance certification. Some certifications are required, while others are voluntary or preferred by employers. Earning certification demonstrates your commitment to professional development as well as your high level of skill in a particular area.
Which Accounting Specialization Should You Choose?
Some schools allow you to specialize by focusing your accounting program studies in an area of interest, which may give you a competitive edge later when you're building your accounting career.
- Tax Accounting: Tax accounting narrowly focuses on planning for taxes and preparing tax documents. Tax accountants prepare and file tax returns for businesses and individuals by following the Internal Revenue Code. They also look at taxes in the context of an organization's or individual's financial situation to identify opportunities to reduce taxes.
- Assurance and Auditing Accounting: Assurance and auditing accounting refers to reviewing and investigating the work completed by other accountants. These professionals look for and correct accounting irregularities. Auditors who review the financial documentation of their own organizations are called internal auditors, while auditors who review the documentation of organizations that are not their direct employers are called external auditors.
- Analytics Accounting: Analytics accounting, which is also called managerial accounting, deals with financial analysis and decision-making. Analysts take the complex data found in financial documents and make it more accessible to stakeholders. This data helps business leaders make informed decisions to meet an organization's goals.
- Forensic Accounting: A forensic accounting degree or concentration may interest those who enjoy investigating and reconstructing financial documents. Forensic accountants often work in law enforcement or for legal teams, examining accounting documentation and looking for evidence of fraud, money laundering, identity theft, and other crimes.
When Should You Consider an Advanced Accounting Degree?
Graduates who hope to move into higher-level management roles within the accounting or finance fields may find that earning an advanced degree makes them more attractive job candidates. Advanced degrees help students obtain the depth of knowledge and mastery of skills employers expect when hiring for managerial positions, such as controller and chief financial officer.
- Master's in Accounting: A master's degree in accounting can increase your growth potential. Courses typically cover advanced accounting topics, such as managerial accounting, advanced tax for individuals and businesses, and advanced auditing theory. Students may also pursue a master's degree in accounting to complete the 150 credits needed to become licensed after passing their CPA exam. Some schools make it easier to gain those additional credit hours by combining a bachelor's degree with a master's degree, which is often called a 4+1 program.
- MBA in Accounting: Students who want to advance their accounting knowledge while also acquiring a broad background in general business management may want to consider earning a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. Like a master's in accounting, an MBA with an accounting focus will also prepare you to sit for the CPA exam.
- Doctorate in Accounting: Some employers may require their senior accounting executives to hold doctorates. However, graduates who earn an accounting doctorate usually become college professors or researchers. Because of the intense study and research necessary for a doctorate, those with the degree often serve as legal witnesses in cases of accounting malpractice and securities fraud. They may also work as consultants for the government or on criminal cases that need forensic accountants.
Is an Online Bachelor's Degree in Accounting Worth It?
A degree in accounting is worth it for individuals who aspire to have a steady career with plenty of opportunities for professional growth. Ultimately, however, the worth of this education will vary depending on an individual's personal circumstances, financial situation, and other obligations, so prospective students should carefully evaluate these factors before deciding to enroll. They may also consider the following pros and cons of an accounting bachelor's.
Potential Benefits
- A career in accounting is considered a high-status occupation. According to the , accountants were ranked seventh in the top 10 most respected professions in the world.
- Accountants typically have a well-defined career path. This is because students graduate with a set of hard financial skills and gain on-the-job experience which makes it easier to identify jobs and future promotions. Furthermore, the accounting field remains largely unchanged, despite new financial tools and technologies, allowing graduates to chart a predictable career.
Potential Drawbacks
- An accounting degree at the undergraduate level may not be enough to advance a career in finance. Graduates will often need a CPA license to conduct audits and some states expect accountants to have a master's degree and certification for higher-level positions.
- Accountants have among the lowest job satisfaction rates in the country. Many , while others feel their skills are underutilized.
Student Reviews of Online Accounting Programs
The support provided by admins, financial aid, instructors and your academic counselor is outstanding. I have had nothing but the best help and encouragement from the people involved with helping me start my journey. Although it is all online, the resources provided ensure you have everything you need to get started. I was afraid to get back into school but the flexibility provided by the courses has been a huge stress relief.

The University of Phoenix has surpassed my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to further their education. They are very thorough with their communication and kind and compassionate to my needs. When I have a question, the response time is prompt and courteous. There is also follow-up communication, which surprised me. There are also a lot of resources for study groups and direct access to the administration if needed.

This school is a joke for distance learning students. I had an issue. I called in to speak with staff and was given different information five times with each staff member I spoke with. They are inconsistent and will lie. I am sure they can see that a student is enrolled in distance learning, and they will still tell you that you have to come to one of the campuses to bring information. Sadly, I live in Florida and will NEVER drive or take a flight to Texas to bring one document. The inconsistency... Read More

Strayer University was the first college to contact me when I came out of rehab in 2022. I needed something to be proud of for myself since I had just gone through one of the lowest points of my life, followed immediately by the best choice of my life--checking into a mental hospital and then choosing inhouse rehab. I had been out of school for 29 years when I decided to enroll at Strayer. I had wanted to pursue a degree in psychology but Strayer does not off any degrees in psychology, therefore... Read More

My experience earning a B.S. in Management at the University of Phoenix was overwhelmingly positive, and the program met my expectations and then some. As a working professional, my top priorities were flexibility, generous credit transfer, and the ability to get academic credit for my real-world work experience. The University of Phoenix delivered exceptionally well on all three fronts, making it possible for me to pursue my degree without putting my career on hold.
The curriculum itself was both... Read More
The instructors were professional and knowledgeable, meeting the expectations for their roles. Where UoPX truly excels is in its online platform. It's arguably one of the best out there; it's intuitive, stable, and clearly designed for students who are balancing school with other commitments.
My final recommendation is this: If you are a working professional who needs to earn a formal credential like a Bachelor's or Master's degree, the University of Phoenix is an outstanding choice. However, if your goal is purely to build a specific skill without the need for a full degree, there are likely more focused and less expensive options available. For my goals, it was the perfect vehicle for success.

The University of Phoenix, by all means, is a good school. When put into perspective why this school came to be what it is, it is for the working adult. We have to make the time that works best for us and use that as an opportunity to learn the material and pass our classes. I make this point because there are comments regarding the teaching style. Yet, many need to remember that as working individuals, we cannot attend classes at a specific time along with other students; this idea defeats the purpose... Read More

This school doesn't give you all the information you need the first time. In fact, after sending in notarized copies of the requested forms they rejected them because they didn't like the ID I used at the notary. Not only did I call to verify the information needed and that I would be providing before having the form filled out, but i specifically asked about my ID. Only after receiving my originals did they send me a special form with "additional" information and requirements that were not originally... Read More

I'm extremely confused by these reviews, particularly the negative reviews associated with the accounting program. If you have never attempted to take an online degree program, please do not blame Rasmussen for your ignorance! This school is 20x easier than other online programs I have enrolled in. I initially questioned the quality of the education solely because of how easy it was until I came here and saw all these terrible reviews saying it was hard and realized the quality was exceptional. I returned to school as an older student. I felt more comfortable pursuing my education online rather than in a traditional classroom setting.
I was very happy overall with the education I received. It required a bit more self-teaching than expected and many of the courses involved a lot of writing. I successfully completed my bachelor's degree program and I am very happy in my new career.

The tuition is not worth it. Herzing focuses more on getting your money than providing you a quality education. The textbook they provide for my major is very broad and doesn’t explain things all the way through. I mostly learn from YouTube and textbooks that I found through my own research. The only pros I have about this school is that it’s kind of flexible and very independent. If I had to go back in time, I would not choose to attend this school. But hey…I’m already in debt.

If you are just trying to check a box for education, WGU is probably a great choice. I felt that the instructors were pretty much doing this as their side gig and also did not find them very helpful when I had questions. They just seemed like maybe I was taking too much of their energy with an occasional question or need. It always cracked me up how they would not help me, but would tell me that if I needed anything else to be sure and contact them. Overall, pretty lame. The last straw was just the... Read More

I feel like I wasted time and money on my degree. I have had a really hard time getting the career I want. The only thing my degree has help me with is getting my foot in the door to low paying jobs. I don’t think employers take this degree seriously. I was just told by a recruiter I should take the name of the school off my resume. I wouldn’t waste your time or money.
