I attended Buena Vista University as a full-time student from 2012-2017. I was engaged in different student groups and got the chance to volunteer within my local community as well getting the chance to travel out of state. BVU is always going to be my home away from home. The faculty, staff, coaches, and students were like non other. The small campus size allowed you to really get to know your professors and classmates. Not only did this make learning more fun, but it made it easier for me to approach people for help! I have no regrets about attending this University. I was given a wonderful education and the resources I needed to get into grad school. This review is for my experience with BVU's remote campuses, not the main BVU campus in Storm Lake. I wanted to finish my bachelor's degree and BVU was the only option in my area. They offer night classes at the local community college campus in my town as well as online classes. Program options are limited, but I chose English. Here is a rundown of my experiences: 1) The office staff lost my paperwork. A few days after I submitted my papers, I received a letter reminding me to turn them in. I called... Read More and they claimed they never got them, even though I had turned them in personally. 2) Despite claiming certain programs are offered, you might be taking a high number of independent study courses. This was the case as an English major. All of my core classes were IS. That's if the classes are even offered. I had no choice in what electives to take. 3) Substandard instructors. My IS literature instructor didn't follow his own grading rules set forth in the syllabus. (I discovered this by comparing essays with another student. He was just handing out A's to anyone who turned in work.) My advanced composition instructor was a stay-at-home mom who got bored and decided that teaching one class a year would keep her busy. She was never able to provide direction for the class and requests for clarification on assignments were met with shoulder shrugs. My conflict management instructor was a former industrial production supervisor who got sick of his day job but wasn't ready to retire yet. He had no teaching experience, but blamed the class when no one scored higher than 75% on the midterm. (Maybe it was because he was a bad teacher?) He preferred to tell us about his latest experiment with homebrewing.
