At least for the Computer Science programs Champlain College Online (CCO), seems like a diploma mill. I chose their program because of it's relative low cost for federal employees. Even despite the "value", I would not enroll again (which is why I'm not continuing on for a bachelor's degree). I graduated with a 3.8 GPA, so it's not like I didn't put in effort. Furthermore, a masters degree in a given subject doesn't necessarily make you a good instructor. I don't think their vetting process is very strong. -Poor instruction materials: The intro to computer networking class I took, for example, used a textbook from the early 2000s. That is an eternity in internet technology. The main weekly task was answering questions from the back of the book (about old technologies, many of which may not even be widely used anymore). -Poor professor communication: I usually avoided direct messaging with professors because it was generally easier finding answers elsewhere, but when I did some would take more than 48 hours to respond (if they did). -Discussion forums: Requirements and evaluations varied wildly by professor, as did the quality of individual posts. Since the degree program was in a science, every student essentially wrote the same response to the weekly prompts, just using slightly different wording and citations. -Aggressive, misleading marketing: Prior to signing on the dotted line, I was harassed daily with voicemails and emails about enrolling in CCO. If you have a pulse and desire to take out student loans, you're a shoe-in! -Few networking opportunities: This is the same for many online programs I imagine, but it's absolutely something to consider prior to enrolling. I had previously taken a few online MOOCs through EdX and Coursera and the quality was honestly about the same. Perhaps other subjects of study like the humanities or social science may be well-suited to their programs, but I would strongly recommend against enrolling in STEM-related programs with Champlain College Online.

The instruction in this degree program was excellent. You learned from seasoned professionals int he Mediation Field. The majority of the instructors were very knowledgeable and experienced in this field. Initially, the amount of residencies that was required for this program was far too many, however, because the school decided to eliminate this program as a stand alone degree and it was migrated into an MBA program the school cut down on them considerably although it was a great experience. Con:... Read More I had a serious health issue and couldn't complete my last assignment for a class on time but the instructor was not sympathetic at all and basically failed me (C-). Even though I appealed my case to the Academic director and had medical proof from a doctor their decision was to side with the instructor and let the grade hold. Ultimately, I was forced to take another class in the MBA field so that I could graduate since I was short the 3 credits I needed. I felt this decision was unjust and I should have been allowed to make up the paper based on my situation..

Champlain shines in it's great teaching staff. In everything else, it fails miserably. It became quite clear to me that the administration only wants your money. Core classes only exist to keep students at the school. These credits do not transfer anywhere else, so a lot of students struggling at the school choose to either stay and not enjoy their schooling, or they just drop out of college entirely because going anywhere else means repeating a year. Amazing experience, some of the best faculty I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Instructors were universally attorneys working in the field where they taught. The work is not easy, a lot of writing and deep, insightful thought is required. The instructors were easily available for assistance when needed, and appreciated creative thinking. Attending Champlain College online has really prepared me for a rigorous law school program. I graduated in December 2010, and I was highly engaged as a student and very competitive during my studies. Anyone can be an average student but a great student knows he or she will have to go well beyond expectations to stand out and above your peers. Do not wait until an assignment is due at midnight to begin working on it at midnight or waiting until the night before the assignment is due to turn in a ten (10) page paper full of spelling errors, improper reference citations, and plagiarism. Trust me, most experienced professors can tell by the first sentence if it's your own words in writing. Always remember, on your first day of class online at Champlain when a professor ask you to submit an introduction of yourself is mainly to identify who you are but more importantly, establishing your writing style so they can recognize when you submit a paper that is not being written by YOU. Get to learn some of the staff working in the admissions office, financial aid office, and advisors by becoming friendlier instead of becoming an enemy & you will begin to see a difference in how your paperwork is being processed.
