I would recommend John Jay College to anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or forensic field. The professors are great, they are very supportive and I have not had any problems with any classes. The curriculum is set up for success as it requires you to pursue a thesis track or an externship, or both!

John Jay is a highly respected school. The programs are very flexible. I was able to take classes from different departments to personalize my program for my goal. I decided to become an addiction counselor midway through my program. I was still able to take drug and alcohol related classes within the psychology department but also ones with the criminal justice department (which happened to be taught by sociology and anthropology professors).

Excellent education for the Forensic field. Professors often have excellent research and clinical practice.

The classes are very informative and the program itself is set up to, theoretically, put you in a prime position to get a job right after graduation. However, there is no real graduate guidance program and you often must discover vital information on your own or through peers.

The class selection is incredible and the professors are very knowledgeable. There are ample opportunities to get involved in research. Unfortunately there is not much financial aid for graduate level students. Also, the Masters in Forensic Psych. program recently changed its thesis requirements, making it more difficult for new grad students to select a topic and find an adviser.

Pros - program specific classes focused on forensic psychology Cons- high level of inaccessibility for international students. SSN is required for identification and causes problems for non-Americans. Less opportunity for financial aid with double the costs in tuition.

The administration is striving to make this a more academically competitive program, and rightly so, as the quality of the faculty is quite good. There are rampant problems with the administrative bureaucracy which can take your entire academic career to successfully navigate.
