Elizabeth City State University gave me an experience that reminded me that support and education can truly change someone’s path. As an adult transfer student and distance learner, returning to school was not easy. I faced personal, family, and work challenges throughout my time at ECSU, but the university provided encouragement, support, and professors who genuinely cared about student success.

What stood out most to me was the sense of community. From faculty members answering questions and following... Read More up, to professors who challenged me academically while still making me feel capable, ECSU created an environment where I felt supported instead of overlooked. My classes helped me grow not only academically, but personally and professionally as well.

I especially appreciated how approachable many of the professors and staff were. The university also gave me the opportunity to reconnect with literature, strengthen my research and writing skills, and complete a capstone project I am truly proud of.

ECSU may be a smaller university, but it offers a strong sense of community, opportunity, and Viking pride. Overall, my experience helped me grow in confidence, resilience, and purpose, and I am proud to soon graduate as a Viking.

Despite ECSU being in an impoverished area, from day one ECSU felt like home and different in a good way. The campus is small enough that professors remember your name. Advisors and professors had open-door policies they lived by. I struggled with acceptance in Social Work program, so I transitioned to Sociology which was seamless. I attended Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) for my undergraduate studies because it was important to me to attend a university that had students and faculty who come from similar backgrounds and circumstances, and who have had similar cultural experiences as myself. It was also equally important to be at an institution that embodied an atmosphere of community and collaboration among the student body, professors, and faculty. My time at ECSU was very enriching. Not only was I able to achieve academic success, but I was also provided the environment to grow as an individual and as a contributing member of a larger community. Specifically, my coursework and research experiences at ECSU helped me move onto my current doctoral program. As a student under the tutelage of Dr. Ephraim Gwebu (former ECSU professor and department chair), I was afforded the opportunity to participate in numerous extensive research experiences as a 2010-2013 National Institutes of Health Minority Biomedical Research Support Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (NIH-MBRS RISE) fellow, and a 2012 National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Minority Health International Training (NIH-MHD MHIRT) fellow. These experiences prepared me to pursue a doctoral degree by enhancing my understanding and knowledge of biomedical sciences and allowing me to gain expertise in a variety of research techniques. I am a college graduate of Elizabeth City State University, I am currently in graduate school at Virginia University of Lynchburg pursuing master degree in organizational management. Actually I was very surprised at how much school spirit there is. It seems that clubs such as Pep Squad and the band are the talk of the campus. I have realized that when it comes to colleges and universities in the south, the band is more important than the sports. As for Virginia University Of Lynchburg, it is definitely an excellent choice for higher learning. I am in graduate school right now and so far this school shows that you will stay focused, and be diligent in studies as there are no distractions. Making you nothing short of a Scholar upon my graduation.
