I attended Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) for my undergraduate studies because it was important to me to attend a university that had students and faculty who come from similar backgrounds and circumstances, and who have had similar cultural experiences as myself. My time at ECSU was very enriching. Not only was I able to achieve academic success, but I was also provided the environment to grow as an individual and as a contributing member of a larger community. Specifically, my coursework and research experiences at ECSU helped me move onto my current doctoral program. As a student under the tutelage of Dr. Ephraim Gwebu (former ECSU professor and department chair), I was afforded the opportunity to participate in numerous extensive research experiences as a 2010-2013 National Institutes of Health Minority Biomedical Research Support Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (NIH-MBRS RISE) fellow, and a 2012 National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Minority Health International Training (NIH-MHD MHIRT) fellow. These experiences prepared me to pursue a doctoral degree by enhancing my understanding and knowledge of biomedical sciences and allowing me to gain expertise in a variety of research techniques. I literally can go on and on about how great my experiences were at ECSU. I am a college graduate of Elizabeth City State University, I am currently in graduate school at Virginia University of Lynchburg pursuing master degree in organizational management. Actually I was very surprised at how much school spirit there is. It seems that clubs such as Pep Squad and the band are the talk of the campus. I have realized that when it comes to colleges and universities in the south, the band is more important than the sports. As for Virginia University Of Lynchburg, it is definitely an excellent choice for higher learning. I am in graduate school right now and so far this school shows that you will stay focused, and be diligent in studies as there are no distractions. Making you nothing short of a Scholar upon my graduation.
