So the people I met while at Emerson were definitely the most valuable part of attending for me.

I absolutely adored my time at Emerson College. I ended up graduating early due to my work in high school, but I do wish I could have had a few more years still at the school. Emerson is what you make of it. The academic rigor is not stellar - what separates Emerson from other schools is the community. The connections I鈥檝e made at Emerson are fantastic. It鈥檚 a school that attracts many unique and big personalities (primarily known for its film program, so lots of artist types). I was a film major and I feel that I thrived. I could start a portfolio after my first year - I received wonderful internships with music labels & had amazing opportunities to present my theses and travel. But I am quite aware that Emerson was a personality-heavy school, and if someone doesn鈥檛 excel in that community, it will be difficult. Sometimes folks can be pretentious - it鈥檚 an expensive school that attracts quirky artsy kids from wealthy families. I wouldn鈥檛 say I fit this archetype (I could only attend Emerson on a scholarship), and I definitely butted heads with many students of this nature.

I am a Speech at Emerson student on the 9-term track, and if I could go back in time, I would have never applied or attended this school. Their placement isn鈥檛 the best. I had a horrible experience. Their immersion meeting is a waste of money and time; it could鈥檝e been through zoom, just like their live sessions. They assign you a student success advisor who is meant to build a relationship with you and check in on you regarding courses or provide assistance as needed. I鈥檝e had 3 of them in 3 semesters.... The placement specialists won鈥檛 share information as they search for your placements the most they say is 鈥淚 have a warm lead鈥� (whatever that means). My placement specialist had poor communication with my site resulting in a very angry email from my supervisor and I then was not provided assistance with the matter at hand and had to resolve the issue on my own. The concept of online is amazing but, overall the program needs work. In my experience I am not being treated appropriately for the amount of money it cost to attend this institution. I do not recommend look elsewhere!

I鈥檝e had a very mixed experience here, and would not have selected the school if I could go back in time. There鈥檚 not much community among grad students. My experiences with instructors has ranged from supportive to shockingly unsupportive, hostile even. The school will tell you that there are teaching opportunities for grad students, but it鈥檚 not true for everyone. I can't speak for other Master's programs offered at the school, but the IMC program was the biggest waste of time. You are essentially forced to take the same course over and over, material is repeated, format is the same (heavy focus on group projects and case studies) and half the courses listed in the course catalog are never even available to take. The large majority of my classmates expressed their disappointment and frustration with this program but it only seems to be getting worse. I would suggest saving your time and money and look at other schools to receive a quality graduate level education in marketing.

Emerson College is a gem, a place where I found my refuge as a nerdy and ambitious young adult after the tumultuous high school years. The year that applied to Emerson (2003), the college ranked #1 on Princeton Review's "Dodge Ball Targets" list--a point of pride for me because I had always been one and never especially sporty. The old adage applies here just the same--"You get out of it what you put into it!"--but there are so many opportunities to try out and master emerging technologies and to collaborate with other students (who may become your future colleagues) on films, plays, or campaigns. While the classes oftentimes are not as rigorous as I might have liked, you still learn quite a lot, especially since you're able to focus on your specific major from your first quarter of classes. There are liberal arts requirements sprinkled in for good measure, but you can do a deep dive into your passion from the start. Some students would joke that they learned more outside of the classroom than in, but in the film production realm, that was primarily in helping others on their student films--required for certain classes. Ultimately, the Emerson network (dubbed the "Emerson Mafia" by many) is what cinches the school for a lot of people. You build a huge network while attending Emerson, and then once you've graduated, you are protected or interviewed by prior Emerson alum who are often embedded in the career field that you desire. Word of mouth and reputation are the keys to continuing work in the film and TV production industries, so if you get a leg up into that world through another Emerson alum, you pay it forward and help out those who come next where possible. It's a supportive atmosphere while in school and once out.

Emerson College employs talented, professionals in the publishing industry as adjunct professors, so you are learning from people who work in the field on a daily basis.
