Nearly every class I have attended so far has been a cengage online learning module that the professor purchases then allows the class to run on auto pilot while they collect a check. Frustrating the cost I am paying to learn from cengage that only costs about $150 for a student subscription and still pay thousands for tuition.

Campus life was the biggest pain as well as some professors. Some professors were very unprofessional there and treated students poorly but overall the rest of the professors were amazing and always had a good eye out for all their students and don’t wanted all of us to succeed.

I should start with the good things about Stony Brook. You'll get the most out of this school if you're focused on academics, driven, and don't mind missing out on some/most aspects of a wilder college life (though you may appreciate the sketchy frat parties). Stony Brook has amazing resources for STEM research, especially in biology/clinical medicine. I majored in biology with a computational focus and took several classes in upper division physics as well, so I can say for certain that the school... Read More

The negative aspects of Stony Brook are its remoteness and its amenities (or lack thereof). It's a big commuter school and in a quieter area - it will be very hard to get around without a car, and parking is ridiculously expensive (last I heard). There are county buses, which are free for students on weekends, and a few shuttles, including weekend shuttles for grocery shopping. But as of 2024, you were required to pay for the stupidly overpriced on-campus meal plan in your freshman year, and for every year after depending on where you were housed. This brings me to the issue of amenities: there are a variety of food options but most of them are pricey if you're not on the dining plan, and food quality is often poor and even dangerous. There are good parts and bad parts. As for housing: there are some dorm buildings that are actually suitable for human habitation, but many of them have mold and/or insects. It's also very hard to end up with roommates that match your preferences, and Stony Brook makes it very difficult to change dorms. Keep in mind that these are common issues at a lot of universities, but the thing is, with Stony Brook it's physically harder to get away. The campus is small and there's not a whole lot to do there or in surrounding area; however, there is a train station on campus where you can get to NYC in hours, which is a cool perk.

However, it is more than possible to have good experiences here if you're willing to put up with that. There are fun campus events, some beautiful sights and places to hang out, and the main academic mall has a bustling energy on weekdays that feels perfect for a college campus. You won't have a problem finding friends if you're willing to put yourself out there. Especially if you're an introverted academic, you'll get a lot out of this place, and have a fairly valuable degree to boot. We also have our dramas, campus lore, and cool buildings to explore late at night (check out the physics building).

I really enjoyed my time at Stony Brook University. I made great friendships that will stay with me for life. I am also very satisfied with the quality of education I received; most people have a very positive view of Stony Brook University. I made good relationships with my professors as well and I felt all the professors I interacted with were very qualified and knowledgeable in their respective field.

Stony Brook University is a great college, with great faculty and staff. It delivers a quality education and its campus is quaint with access to NYC. While does not particularly standout for any reason, it is complete and one can find a full college experience so long as one looks for it.

I felt very well supported by my college and they were able to give me the academic and social resources I needed when I was struggling. I felt like I learned a lot, and the classes I took felt challenging but also informative and professional. I would recommend my college to others.

I enjoyed my time at Stony Brook and believe the academic opportunities there are very strong. I lived on campus which I think really helped my experience. I was much more easily able to make friends and see them after classes. Physics was very demanding as a major, but the professors were generally helpful, and often very prominent figures in the field. Grading was fair in all classes.

I graduated from SBU in 2022. During my time here, the school looked at students as nothing more than a way to get money in exchange for an education that made you feel unsupported in every way possible. Professors never had time for students outside of office hours for any large science or lecture class. All the "teaching" fell on the TAs (shoutout to the Orgo TAs, you guys were gods). Classes were also so big that exams had to be taken at 7:15 at night since multiple rooms were needed to accommodate... Read More

I know of other school programs that were more proactive in helping its students be successful in their field. I wish Stony had more opportunities for us students to thrive and to introduce more awareness and guest speakers to motivate. Lectures were all read off slides

Overall Stony Brook University was a great school for the price it is at. I am content with the education, services, and campus experience I had. I was able to graduate without being ridden with student loan debt yet experience a fulfilling college experience. They have very competitive STEM programs and a wide variety of skilled professors. The campus itself is quite nice, not too big, not too small. It is quite quiet on the weekends with a large majority of the student base being commuters so do... Read More

Stony Brook University is a great, affordable university for lower to middle class income students. While not as prestigious as other schools, Stony Brook University offers an above-average standard of education. Outside of academics, the university has a plethora of clubs and organizations to join.

Stony Brook University is a large campus with a diverse population. As such, you will never get bored. The teachers fantastic on average and are willing to work with you, especially in smaller classes. The on-campus food in the paid dining halls is pretty spectacular too, for college food standards.

Stony Brook University has an excellent graduate neuroscience program led by professors who are passionate about their research and are very supportive of their students. They offer excellent mentorship to help their graduate students further their careers. However, graduate students are paid below minimum wage for the area, and this makes it difficult for them to support themselves and focus on their research. If students were paid a livable wage then it would greatly increase the reputation of... Read More

Stony Brook University offers a wide range of programs. Mostly focused on STEM fields, they offer an exceptional educational experience. The campus is well maintained and they have an excellent bus system that gets students to and from there destination in no time. I highly recommend SBU.

Stony Brook University in my opinion is a great value, for the price which is paid for in-state students. The university has great professors, and offers a very studious environment which allows students to flourish. While the university is well known for their STEM majors, the SBU is making great strides in their other departments. As for as social environment, I do believe SBU lacks a bit, though from an educational standpoint, I think the university adequately makes up for this.

My time at Stony Brook University has indelibly changed me as a person and as a thinker. My classes and interactions with instructors allowed me to learn how to think critically and write powerfully. I had a wonderful, diverse cohort of friends, some of whom have remained lifetime friends. I met wonderful people and had unforgettable experiences and opportunities.

The school was great for the price. I think it is unbeatable for the price and if I recall correctly, it is rated one of the highest social mobility colleges in the country. The academics are good, but the sports are not too good. Also, sometimes the social life here is not too great as it is a commuter school.

I transferred into Stony Brook University from my community college to do the second half of my 4-year degree. I was very impressed with the facilities that students have access to, especially the Student Union building which was a great place to relax between classes. It is worth mentioning that this is very much a STEM-focused school and while there is definitely a large body of humanities students like myself, the options for courses can sometimes be a bit limited. I enjoyed most of my classes... Read More
