The younger faculty are usually more enthusiastic and are always ready to help you learn. The much older ones are nicer but would not come down to your level of thinking. The environment is really a competitive one so you better brace up. Students however are much willing to help. Grading is subject to instructor, they may decide to curve based on general performance of the class. The Library is only opened till 11:45 pm you are advised to get a good accommodation where you could study at night. The programs are not really structured for research rather they are taught programs however if you happen to get a research position with a professor, your tuition will be covered in addition to stipends for living expenses which is sufficient however be ready to work tirelessly with no option of working elsewhere. Flexibility is really encouraged and there are sufficient avenues to really get engaged either in your field or elsewhere. Campus is really beautiful and surrounded with flora. The University of Michigan-Dearborn is a fine institution. Although just a commuter school and many students simply attend class and then go home, it is worth it to get involved. Getting involved in the slew of extracurricular activities enhances the educational experience one receives at this school. As a non-traditional college student, I actually took classes at three other colleges before landing at the University of Michigan - Dearborn. What I appreciated most about the this institution were its small class sizes, as well as its plethora of diversity. The small class sizes allowed for a more intimate learning environment, one which welcomed student-teacher interactions and also encouraged teamwork. Another positive aspect I would like to discuss is the advising resources that were offered at this university. As a student with the aspiration of going to medical school and becoming a doctor, I was blessed to have a phenomenal pre-med advisor who guided me through the entire application process, and shed light in areas I was very unsure about. These benefits supported me as I earned my B.S. in biological sciences, and also helped me gain acceptance to the medical school of my choice. While reviewing my degree program in biology however, I am disappointed to say that I was not satisfied with the upper level requirements presented by it. Many of my peers who were also pursuing a degree in biology and shared an interest in the pre-health field, ranging from pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, or etc. agreed with my criticism of the program. The main issue was that many of the required upper level biology courses seemed inappropriate for the pre-health track. For example while most of us would've preferred to take human physiology instead of plant physiology, we were forced to enroll in the latter as a requirement, and offered human physiology is an elective instead. As an individual who is currently on his path towards medical school, I would have appreciated a biology program which was more tailored to my eventual post graduate education rather than one which forced required classes that I did not care to take. While talking to many of my classmates were also in the same major as myself I received very similar feedback as well in regards to classes such as plant physiology, ecology, and comparative animal physiology, which were required over more pertinent courses such as human physiology, bio chemistry, or cellular biology which were not. That being said, in hindsight I may have instead chosen a different major, perhaps biochemistry of microbiology, so I could have avoided classes that were not going to prep me for medical school. Overall I would recommend this university to anyone who is interested in a more intimate learning environment that both encourages individuality and inclusion, and is also interested in the pre-health sciences as this college is known to produce many medical students, dental students, and pharmacy students. Through my experience I can safely state that if you pursue a pre-health track at the University of Michigan - Dearborn, and you utilize both the advising resources and multiple student-run organizations present at the school, you will receive the tools necessary to succeed and acquire those dreams you dare the chase.
