Degree: Philosophy

I very much enjoyed my educational formation at the University of Utah. I studied philosophy, and in particular the philosophy of science, at Utah. The philosophy faculty was (and is) top notch. The graduate seminars were intimate and the professors were engaged and giving of their time. I didn’t have a problem finding faculty with whom to work and help curate my own budding academic career. I would highly recommend the University of Utah and especially its philosophy department.

The University of Utah is a great school with a great environment. The standards the institutes holds its student’s too is high and that is apparent in the studies and expectations. There are plenty of extra curricular classes to attend and further develop experiences and education. The sports teams are fun and involved and there’s a fantastic atmosphere of togetherness within the college.

The University of Utah provided a good selection for classes and opportunities to grow a learn. Aside from the academics, the campus has a lot of activities and extra curriculars to help you find and cater to you interests. It is located in a beautiful area with tons of outdoor recreation near by, which is a plus

Overall I would say it was a great school and a great experience. I do wish they had more guidance for freshmen's to discover what majors they might like to pursue so they don't waste as much time as I did there. I had some really great professors and some that were not so great but I think that would be the case at any school

My university experience at the University of Utah was phenomenal! I truly enjoyed getting to know my professors, fellow students, and the resources on campus. When I began my master's degree, I was 6 months pregnant and determined to get through, but had no clue what was coming. I almost gave up multiple times, but with the support of the university programs, my professors, and the staff within my department, I was able to graduate and get my master's thesis research published in a prestigious journal.... University of Utah or famously known as "The U" is a great university for someone looking to study STEM subjects. The teachers are knowledgeable and got out their way to help students prosper in their respective careers. The school has a strong alumni presence all over the US.

I attended the University of Utah for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and overall, it was a very positive experience. The campus is beautiful year-round, especially in the fall with the mountains as a backdrop. Academically, I found the faculty to be strong in my major (accounting). Research opportunities were abundant, and I appreciated the university’s emphasis on undergraduate involvement in labs. Compared to other schools I considered—like Utah State and Utah Valley University —Utah offered... Read More

This university uses every opportunity to charge you more money. The parking passes this semester are $194, and its only getting more expensive. They also use every opportunity to talk about how eco-friendly they are, how they value diversity, and how they have so many resources. They are not these things. The only people that can afford to go here anymore are those that have everything paid for by their parents. Rent at the U and by the U is ridiculous. It is at least $700 a month not including... Do not make the same mistake I did PICK ANOTHER UNIVERSITY. Not only was I disappointed with the school, when I was a student but now that I am am alumni, I cannot access my student records or use any of the alumni services because my phone is too old for thier stupid, manditory, security app. I paid so much money in student loans, just so I could get locked out of everything. It's ridiculous!

I highly recommend NOT attending the University of Utah's College of Architecture and Planning program. It is a complete mess and the only consistent thing about the college is that it is consistently inconsistent. Do to their lack of organization we have retaken several classes primarily their Building Tech class and Professional Practice class. They are very unsure of what to teach us and very little of what they have taught us is applicable to the real world. They pride themselves on their Design... Read More

The first year has better professors than second year. But the full year of “Macro” and “Reflexive” classes are absolute jokes. I wish I had done a different program focused on actual mental health care techniques. Most of the professors are abysmal. There are some gold nuggets: Landward, Gringeri, Bettman-Schaefer for DSM, O’Connor, Lundahl. I am in second year and all the new profs they hired seem like they have no idea what they’re doing. Some have no class structure and just expect an “open dialogue”... Read More

I got an honors degree in international studies and political science. My experience at the U was worth it because of Center for Ethnic Students Affairs, Hinckley Institute of Politics and study abroad experiences. However, due to my interest in food politics, I would definitely choose Westminster College where I am getting my masters at.

The University of Utah is a good school. There are politics involved in some of the departments, like the engineering department. I don't know much about this but my husband graduated from the EE program and spoke about this. He feels like overall it was a good EE program to attend.
My human development and family studies program had a fantastic academic advisor that really helped you figure out your plan. The teachers at UofU can lean on the liberal side especially in their teaching. However, my... Read More

If I had anything to complain about it would be parking and safety.
The parking at the school has been terrible for years. I do know they recently built a parking garage but there is minimal parking and the cost for a pass is astronomical. I do appreciate the free use of public transportation but some times it's not an option.

Safety has come into question recently because of the death of a student. However, this has been a concern for me for years because many women were sexually assaulted in the stadium parking in broad daylight. The UofU needs to take bigger steps in making their students safer.

Degree: School Counseling

This program has been amazing. I love how we are actually learning and implementing the requirements that we will need to do as a school counselor while we are attending school. An example of that includes the implementation of the evidence box which we used during class as one of our big project assessments. This is actually required for us as a counselor in our practice. We also were required to participate in all of the career assessments that we will be administering to our students as counselors... Read More

The professors are very knowledgeable and they also brought in guest speakers who are experts in the field and who actually have put together the programs that we will be using. Another valuable thing is that they feel it is so important to be a part of the national and state organizations that they pay for our memberships into those organizations and help us register for those organizations while we are in school. They pay for us to go to cutting edge national conferences, or professional development offerings so that we can hear the latest and most up to date conversations with peers across the country.

The cohort approach also creates a community of students that is a built in network that you will be able to work with during your two years as a student, but also in the future as we all move on to different schools in our practice. That has been very valuable in creating teamwork and networking opportunities, especially as we have a few who move on to schools as elementary counselors and are the only counselor in their school.

The University of Utah is an amazing school. I was in the actor's conservatory which is a highly accredited program. I was awarded a full ride scholarship to the acting program. Classes started at 9 am and went to 5 pm. We usually had 1 hour for dinner and then we went straight to rehearsals. It was an incredibly demanding program that leaves no time for other activities. The University of Utah was a home away from home for me during my time as an undergrad. While scouting for colleges to attend, I had toured up to 15 different campuses and none had the same feeling that I had with the U. I received an amazing education at the University of Utah, in part because of the faculty in the Department of Theatre. Although the U of U is a research university, all of my professors were very focused on teaching and were always willing to go above and beyond. Additionally, most professors saw value in incorporating current events and social issues into an arts education. However, the U of U could work on diversity. The majority of faculty is white and cis-gendered.

It took me two tries to get into this program as they only accept 15 students per year. Due to the competitiveness of the program, I was expecting a high quality program with great instruction. Instead, the program was terrible and there were only 2 or 3 good instructors throughout. And, most of those were adjuncts.
