How We Rank "Best" Schools
The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online doctoral in physical therapy degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.
We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few doctoral in physical therapy qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

Pros: Great institution, very generous with scholarships and study-abroad programs. Cons: Not a very large student body.
Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Arcadia University as a small, relationship-driven campus where personal attention often defines the experience. Many say professors are accessible, invested, and effective at opening doors to research, assistantships, conferences, clinical work, and career preparation. Study abroad stands out as a signature strength, frequently described as unusually easy to access and academically meaningful. The trade-off is that the university’s size can feel limiting: some reviewers mention sparse nightlife, fewer activities, narrow course options, and social cliques. Cost is another recurring concern, with several citing debt, expensive graduate study, weak career fairs, outdated facilities, or uneven administration.

1 Student Review for Doctoral in Physical Therapy Degrees
St. Scholastica has an excellent, competitive physical therapy program. The class size is small so the professors know you by name and care about you. The classes are challenging and require a lot of commitment, but the work is worth it.
Student Review Summary: Reviews portray The College of Saint Scholastica as a place where personal attention shapes the experience. Across disciplines, students repeatedly praise small classes, approachable professors, and advisors who know them well, offer meaningful mentorship, and support both academic progress and career goals. Several note that hands-on learning, fieldwork, labs, and applied projects make coursework feel practical rather than abstract, while online options are valued for flexibility and relevance to working adults. The strongest drawbacks are cost, occasional disorganization, and a campus setting that can feel isolated without a car. 4 Student Reviews for Doctoral in Physical Therapy Degrees
Great 1 on 1 with professors. Tuition is rather high.
I very much appreciate the value that there is on communication between the faculty and the students. It is a relief to know that the faculty are as invested in their students as much as the students are invested in their own success.
Structure of certain classes within the curriculum can be re-formatted in order to increase the amount of student engagement with the material.
Student Review Summary: Most reviews describe A.T. Still University as demanding, supportive, and professionally focused, with faculty access standing out as a major strength. Students often say the coursework is rigorous but fair, with no easy grades, and that close relationships with professors, small cohorts, and strong peer collaboration help them keep pace. Many also value the school’s holistic, patient-centered philosophy, early or practical clinical exposure, and flexible online or hybrid options that make advancement possible while working. Compare the Best Online Doctor of Physical Therapy Degrees
Five years after graduation, alumni earnings across these online DPT programs run from $86,816 at ATSU to $99,791 at Utica, a spread of about $13,000.
Interestingly, this order does not follow student sentiment: Utica sits at #8 for student reviews yet leads every school with reported earnings, while USC, #11 on student satisfaction, still lands near the top at $89,483 among DPT graduates.
For working PTs weighing a post-professional doctorate, that gap suggests early-career pay tracks the clinician's practice direction at least as much as the school on the diploma. Use the figures to compare programs' five-year outcomes, then weigh which program's structure fits the practice you want to build.
As the graph above illustrates, a whopping 8 (!) of the 12 schools on this list hold a 100% recommendation rate, which is incredibly rare for any of the lists across OnlineU. It shows a very high satisfaction across the list above.
What it compresses shows up in the ratings underneath: among the schools with unanimous recommendations, overall ratings run from 4.84 at AU down to 3.97 at FGCU, meaning students can recommend a school outright while rating parts of the experience more cautiously.
Treat the rate as a floor for fit, not a verdict on quality, and read it next to the ratings and program structure before choosing.
Standout Features of the Best Online DPT Programs: An Editorial Analysis
The Program That Pioneered the Online Postprofessional DPT
A.T. Still University of Health Sciences
A.T. Still's Arizona School of Health Sciences launched its online postprofessional DPT in 2002, when the idea of earning a clinical doctorate at a distance was still untested, and it has since graduated more than 2,000 physical therapists through the format. Two decades of operation have produced machinery newer programs cannot replicate: each student's degree plan is assembled one on one from prior education, professional experience, continuing education, and portfolio materials, with courses starting every six weeks across seven start dates.
Turning Community Service Into Clinical Training
Marymount University
Marymount's DPT folds service partnerships into the clinical curriculum in a way no other program on this list documents. Students can build adaptive mobility devices with Go Baby Go, staff Remote Area Medical clinics, and cover the Marine Corps Marathon, then carry the same experiential model abroad through a two-week clinical placement in Latin America. For applicants who want community engagement treated as clinical preparation, Marymount is a solid choice.
A Residency Weekend That Anchors a Global Degree
Utica University
Utica's post-professional doctorate is the only program on this list delivered through a combined residency and online model for practicing clinicians. Students open the degree with a single residency weekend on campus, then access the curriculum and faculty from anywhere in the world for the remainder of the program, a structure built for physical therapists who want doctoral advancement without relocating or leaving practice.
FAQs About Choosing the Best Online DPT Programs
What Should You Know Before Choosing an Online Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program?
The pursuit of an online doctoral degree in physical therapy, more commonly called an online DPT program, offers a flexible pathway for advancing your expertise in patient care and rehabilitation. As demand for physical therapists rises, obtaining this advanced qualification can enhance your credentials and open doors to leadership roles or specialized practice. DPT online programs typically blend online coursework with in-person clinical residencies.
Physical therapy doctorate programs draw all types of students and professionals. Some have medical backgrounds but choose physical therapy training over nursing school or medical school. Others may have athletic backgrounds and are interested in working in sports medicine or related fields.
Doctoral degree programs in physical therapy teach students how to properly assess and treat patients with dysfunctional movements from pre-existing conditions. Students learn how to communicate with clients, devise action plans to meet their individual needs, keep track of their progress, and share preventive care techniques. If you are new to the physical therapy field, there are entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy programs that have a campus, hybrid, or online structure.
The physical therapy profession has moved away from the master's degree, and a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (DPT) is now required to be a licensed practicing physical therapist.
If you are a practicing physical therapist with a Master of Physical Therapy or Bachelor of Physical Therapy, you may choose to earn the transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy online. This program is for physical therapists (PTs) who entered the field before DPTs became the minimum educational requirement for licensure.
The transitional DPT program is almost entirely online. It is a flexible way for current PTs to learn the latest skills in the field and gain the higher credential.
What Requirements Should You Expect in an Online Doctor of Physical Therapy Program?
Most full-time DPT programs require 120 to 130 credit hours and take three years to complete when enrolled full-time. While the general classes in DPT programs can be completed online, students may need to complete clinical courses on campus.
Along with the didactic coursework, most programs also require students to complete fellowships or clinical rotations to help them gain hands-on experience.
Online DPT degrees are often transitional programs designed for practicing physical therapists who earned only a bachelor's or master's degree before the field shifted to requiring doctoral degrees. These programs can take less than three years to finish depending on your educational and professional background. Be sure to check individual program requirements to ensure you're considering the right program for your career needs.
What Courses Will You Take in an Online DPT Program?
To learn the skills to help patients recover their range of motion or relieve pain, students take courses in natural science, physical therapy techniques, and patient management; this physical therapy theory is then applied during intensive clinical rotations. Here are some examples of classes students might take in their DPT program:
- Patient Evaluation: Bedside manner and methods for evaluating patient cases are explored in this course. Students learn how to interview patients and review medical records.
- Exercise and Manual Techniques: Students study manipulation of the limbs and other exercises to increase the range of motion. Hands-on stimulation, such as massage, is also discussed.
- Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: This is a specialized clinical course that covers particular exercises and assistive devices for musculoskeletal injuries. Topics like balance training and gait are discussed.
- Therapeutic Exercise: Students learn the major strategies for relieving pain and restoring motion through exercise. This clinical course covers the exercises themselves and the skills for instructing and assisting patients in performing the exercises.
What Licensure and Accreditation Should You Verify Before Enrolling in an Online DPT Degree?
All professional physical therapists must be licensed to practice legally in the United States.
To become licensed, students will need to earn their Doctor of Physical Therapy through a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (). CAPTE is the most important accrediting agency for graduate programs in physical therapy. Accreditation ensures that DPT degree programs meet industry standards and that students are prepared for careers in the field.
Licensing requirements vary by state. However, most states require clinical work and a passing grade on the National Physical Therapy Examination () to become a licensed PT. Some states also require that applicants pass separate tests on medical ethics or state medical laws. The NPTE is administered by The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (). To take the exam, applicants must complete a CAPTE-accredited degree program or an alternative academic program approved by the FSBPT. To maintain licensure in most states, PTs must complete continuing education classes every few years to update their training.
Students should contact their state board directly to ensure they have the most current information about licensure. The FSBPT has more information about the eligibility requirements for the national exam and contact information for .
