Florida International University left a strong impression on me overall, especially in terms of campus life and academic support. The student body is diverse, with a large Hispanic population that really shapes the culture of the school. It brings a unique energy and vibrancy to campus life. Socially, there’s definitely a party-school vibe, so students looking for an active social scene will likely find their place here. That said, sports are not the main focus of the university, and it doesn’t have the same kind of dominant athletic culture you might expect from a major Division I powerhouse.

Academically, the university offers a wide range of majors, which makes it accessible to students with many different interests. I found the professors to be knowledgeable and genuinely invested in their subjects. What stood out even more was their willingness to support students outside of class. Many offered extra tutoring sessions and additional help, which made a real difference in understanding the material and succeeding in courses.

I also appreciated the flexibility of taking classes across different formats. I experienced online courses, the main campus, and satellite campuses, and this flexibility allowed me to tailor my schedule and take the classes I actually wanted. In the long run, my degree proved valuable in my career, especially in the Miami workforce, where I’ve met many other graduates from the same university. FIU is a great school for many majors. There are a lot of programs geared towards business, legal, science, and public health majors. However, when you are studying an art at this school, the lack of funding and resources for students is apparent. Florida International University is a research-focused school with strong academics. Professors are generally incredibly accessible and helpful, and there are numerous tutoring-type services provided to students as part of their tuition that will help them succeed academically. There's a strong school spirit, though it could be stronger, but sporting events usually have a respectable attendance. It is a great school where students with drive can succeed and make their mark with the resources available to them.

Florida International University offers students a unique learning and social experience with its exceptional quality of instruction and numerous extracurricular opportunities. Although students outnumber faculty, each faculty member devotes significant time to students in order to meet their needs and understand their approach to learning. Overall, I am grateful for the education I received at F.I.U. My core courses fully developed my writing skills and challenged me academically to reach and attain more for myself. Subsequently, this was the first time I personally was made aware of the color of my skin. Miami is such a diverse cultural city and my skin color did not matter. However, while attending F.I.U. this changed with professor Suggs; who constantly reminded me of this. Whenever, I volunteered to critique a writer in class,... Read More he overlooked me and would not allow me to speak. It was not until an African American writer's work was discussed would he call on me despite the fact, I never volunteered to critique the author's work. Additionally, when we had to read our work to the class, my peers in the course would applaud my insightful analysis of the paper which I always managed to receive a "B" plus on. Several students noticed that my papers never had any of his red corrections on them or comments; yet, I received the grade mentioned previously. To top it off, other students who were not African American whose papers had red marks everywhere always received "A's". My peers who noticed the discrepancy (of my color) told me to speak up and ask his rationale for the grade. I did. Sadly, he marked "that is the grade you earned." I did take the matter up with the Dean of the Arts and Science but because I was schedule to graduate in the summer if I were to pursue and challenge the grade in the course, my credit would be withheld pending the results of the case and I would not graduate on time. I withdrew my case because I had secured a teaching position at Arvida Middle School. I do now regret not pursuing the case, because I know in my heart I was penalized for the color of my skin. All in all, professor Sugg's actions we his alone, and do not take away anything from F.I.U.'s academic institution.

Florida International University is a place of diversity, a unique and welcoming aspect that I instantly gravitated towards to. Since the moment of my first class, I have felt welcomed, respected, and comfortable in its environment. FIU's slogan 'A World's Ahead' truly embodies what the university stands for in terms of its academics, integrity, work ethic, diversity, and university culture.
