I am currently in the Global Journalism program at NYU. I love the program. So far it has given me on the ground experience with reporting, which I have never had before. I have been exposed to various kinds of journalism and encouraged to explore them. I have been able to pursue stories that interest me, while being pushed outside of my comfort zone. I've been inspired by my peers. We often are able to take classes with other journalism students who may specialize in another sector (say business... Read More journalism, as opposed to health, or international relations). This makes combined classes rich with various kinds of specialized knowledge that students share. I have been able to make the most of the vast resources, both textual and personal, that NYU has to offer. There are great opportunities for networking, for internships, and for exploring the newest and most relevant of journalistic skills. To anyone who is seeking to attend a university for journalism and struggling to choose which to apply to, or which to attend once accepted, I would have to suggest that NYU has the most diverse, comprehensive, and flexible program. You can make your degree work for you, personalize it to your interests, and get real applicable experience through classes and connections.

In my specific program, the Magazine Writing program, I couldn't imagine a better opportunity than to be studying at New York University surrounded by some of the best and most forward-thinking writers in the country. The cumulative experience and expertise of the faculty is invaluable, and the location and proximity to professional opportunities after graduation is unmatched. There are 10 different graduate journalism programs at NYU that each take somewhere between 12-15 students each year. They are pretty competitive to get into but are definitely worth the fight. The workload is pretty heavy and there is not a lot of free time to get out and explore New York City, but you can make time to do certain things. I typically have about 12-16 hours of class each week which requires a lot of preparation but all of the classes have been really informative and interesting. I... Read More came into the program with no journalism background so I had to work hard to keep up at first, but it has been a very valuable learning experience thus far. NYU is in New York in the Village, which is a really fun and exciting part of the city. The only real downside is that NYU doesn't offer a great deal of graduate housing so I had to find a place to live off campus that was reasonably close.

I'm in the Global & Joint Studies program in the Journalism department-- a joint degree program between journalism and a social studies department. I particularly like my program because it allows me to study both journalism and an additional field of interest. It's a rare program/opportunity, and it's definitely a 'pro' to NYU's journalism department. There are difficulties, however, in enrolling in certain journalism classes as a result. Each journalism program sponsors (for lack of a better word)... Read More classes each semester-- students of that program then get first dibs. This works to the benefit of students in every program but GloJo which usually does not sponsor/organize courses aside from the basic introductory classes required. The faculty and staff of the department and program, however, are phenomenal. They work very closely with students and due to their connections you get experiences and connections and opportunities you can't get nearly anywhere else. The program is by no means cheap, and living in NYC is not cheap either, but I think in the end having a degree from NYU probably pays itself off.
