Degree: Social Work

I moved to New York to attend school. I was very excited to do so, I had a lot a dreams about what school would be like. It hasn't been a single one of those things. I thought that I would feel like I'm apart of a community, that I would meet cool people and professors and learn something that I wouldn't have learned at a school from my home state. Instead I feel isolated, the people here are all weird and there are so many professors there isn't a chance for community to form. Moving to New York... Read More

New York University school of social work is a unique experience because faculty come and teach as professors from diverse social services agencies in New York City. So you get a chance to receive some insight into the working professional field of social worker. The program also focuses in depth on critical thinking and review of policy and clinical practice, its a especially great program if you want to focus on the clinical side of social work and become a better clinical writer for programs that... I am part of the 16 month accelerated program, which can offer students like me a faster route to starting their second career. New York University has allowed me to achieve more in academia and in my personal life, through developing greater awareness to concepts of oppression, human rights, and a sense of responsibility to dismantle systems of oppression. I am constantly inspired by other students and professors in the school of social work that are motivated to help promote social justice.

New York University's social work master's program is well known and respected in the field. The professors are very accomplished and promote rich classroom discussions that incorporate a variety of viewpoints. (Several of the other instructors were good, too, but the professors impressed me the most.) Many of the readings were very informative and had a good mix of theory and tips on how to put theory into practice. I was a bit disappointed with the internship component; I really wanted to experience... Read More

NYU offered a good clinical program for social work. Classes were small and informative, and offered on many different days and at different times for flexability.

New York University's Silver School of Social Work has opened my eyes to a whole new field! As an undergraduate musical theater major, I didn't have any idea that I would later be studying Social Work at a place like NYU. The Silver School offers a 16 month accelerated MSW program that has allowed me to fast-track my path to becoming a professional social worker. I am interested in utilizing my masters along with my bachelor's degree to provide theater education to young people in low income communities.... Read More

It sets the student on a path of self-discovery and self-knowledge in service of building healthy therapeutic relationships. The professors and staff at NYU Silver School of Social Work are passionate... Read More

New York University offered a plethora of opportunities to learn and grow as a student. They email networking opportunities as well as outside learning opportunities. There's a strong sense of social justice within the school. There are very high expectations of their students and the workload is much higher than other schools (so I hear).

NYU offers a comprehensive social work program that other schools do not offer. While many schools force you to choose a track and stay on it, NYU allows its students to diversify their class portfolio and determine what electives that student finds valuable.

New York University. When people think of NYU they think diversity, opportunity, structure, and mostly expensive. For the past two years I have been enrolled in NYU's social work masters program. For those of you who aren't familiar with NYU, it is broken up into different schools within the school, as are many colleges. So, the school in which my courses are taken is the Silver School of Social Work. Due to the influx of students from all over the northeast students are elgibile to take social work... Read More

Pros: NYU Silver school has a great clinical program. Faculty are experts in their field. There are many opportunities to network and gain knowledge in this space. Cons: Affordability for the school. It is not a diverse student group. Some faculty lack the knowledge to facilitate conversations around social justice issues such as race.

NYU is a great school with a wide range of programs and a bunch of on campus activities and events. For your first year it may be a bit over whelming as a lot is going around you at campus and then the NYC life outside of campus but you'll get the hang of it.

As a student of NYU Silver School of Social Work, I have learned to be an advocate for not only those who are in need of Social Services by a Social Worker but for myself as well. They have prepared me with all the right tools to successfully begin my journey advocating for my clients. Through this program I was able to network with my professors and classmates during mixers and conferences. I would not change my experience to go anywhere else.
