It is difficult for me to compare my experience with other grad schools, since I've only gone to this one. But from my personal experience I can recommend the University of Texas at Austin as its teaching and research faculty & facilities are excellent.

UT is truly a Research I institution, so even the faculty in area studies do a lot of research, and many of the professors in Middle Eastern Studies are devoted to teaching as well. The main cons are the stressful workload and lack of support for career development. I feel discouraged from asking for advice about careers in academia, or alt-ac careers.

Overall, my experience with UT at Austin and the graduate program I took was an excellent one. As an international student I often needed guidance with my academic endeavors. The program size is large enough to be diverse but small enough to ensure ample time for faculty-student time for advising. The student atmosphere is very supportive and collaborative.

I have enjoyed all of my classes as a graduate student in the Department of Geography and the Environment. I also took classes in American Studies and Anthropology. The commitment and professionalism of my advisor and committee members has been invaluable. I truly feel supported here and feel that I have been given a great amount of resources and information for expanding my experience as a student and scholar.

I am in the Government Department, which is within the college of Liberal Arts at UT. I study Political Theory and Public Law. The program is excellent and Austin is a great place to live.
