The hit or miss quality of the institution necessitates the following statement. This review is intended to look at the experience as a whole and should not be applied to any single individual but rather the school of public health on this campus as a whole. Without giving specific examples I can say that the administrative wing of the organization is a disaster. There is a lack of responsiveness and a general unwillingness to explore processes and systems through the eyes of a student. The system... Read More that is used doesn't even allow students to print a class schedule. All of this in mind, I have no hope in the current system being improved in any meaningful way. In my classes I have met some of the most concerned, capable, and passionate professors that exist on this planet. I have also met some of the most disengaged and burnt-out professionals that can possibly exist. The good ones work with students to make sure they understand concepts, they encourage students to engage in the learning process, offer opportunities to engage with the community, and have a high enough level of understanding that they can explain even difficult concepts to elementary aged children. The ineffective professors don't seem to care. There is about a 60/40 split with ineffective professors outnumbering the effective professors. To the credit of the institution, if a student explores outside of the traditional student experience he/she can find some fantastic opportunities to work in the community and learn. The engaged faculty are very supportive of this and work very hard through administrative inefficiencies to ensure that students get the experience they are pursuing. I would not recommend this program to most students. Most students will go to class and take what is thrown to them and if they do that they will receive a sub-par education in this system. Successful students in this program learn to judge which faculty and staff are engaged and have a desire to help. Successful students will then work with those engaged faculty and staff to create a plan for success that includes working in the community. Unfortunately, all students are required to take courses facilitated by a mix of the good, the bad, and the ugly. It could be so much better.
