How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online master's in esl degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few master's in esl qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • Firsthand student reviews place this program from UST at #1 among online ESL master’s degrees nationwide.
  • The M.A. in TESOL is built for educators who already hold Connecticut teacher certification and want to add a TESOL cross-endorsement (rather than earn initial licensure).
  • Students move through the 30-credit program as a cohort, taking one eight-week course at a time and attending a live virtual class one evening per week.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray University of Saint Joseph - CT as a place where many students feel genuinely supported by caring, knowledgeable professors and leave better prepared for their careers. Several praise the school’s small size, attractive and safe campus, and flexible formats that make it possible to keep working while studying. That convenience, though, is not universal. The sharpest criticism targets online courses that still demand constant group coordination or inflexible attendance rules, making them difficult for working adults with families or irregular schedules. A few reviewers also note uneven instructor expertise, a required on-campus final, and minor administrative frustrations.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Capella University are sharply divided, with strong praise for flexibility and equally strong frustration over cost and administration. Supporters describe a demanding online format that works well for self-directed people balancing jobs, family, and relocations, often noting rigorous writing, relevant coursework, and responsive instructors or advisers who helped them finish quickly. Critics focus on billing disputes, opaque financial aid, charges after withdrawal, and uneven teaching quality. Several also describe vague assignments, outdated or glitchy systems, and poor dissertation or practicum support. • Saint Cloud State offers a layered TESL pathway that includes a master’s degree, an entry-level TESOL graduate certificate, and an advanced certificate for students who already hold a master’s degree and want to teach ESL at the college level.
  • Students can pursue graduate assistantships in SCSU’s English for Academic Purposes program or Intensive English Center, where they can work with more than 100 English language learners from over 15 countries each year.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Saint Cloud State as a generally worthwhile, affordable option whose quality depends heavily on how intentionally you use it. Compare Top-Rated Online ESL Master's Programs With Data

Earnings for graduates of ESL-focused education programs can vary because this field spans public schools, adult education, higher education, language institutes, and international teaching. Pay is also shaped by state and district salary schedules, prior teaching experience, licensure, and whether graduates move into curriculum or leadership roles. That makes the degree-specific median earnings more useful as a broad outcomes signal than as a prediction of what an ESL master’s graduate will earn. Students should pair this data with each program’s licensure pathway, intended teaching setting, and their own geographic career plans.

These recommendation rates are school-wide, so they capture the overall student experience at each institution. Strong school-wide sentiment may reflect factors such as advising, online course delivery, faculty access, administrative support, billing, and how well the university serves working adults. You can use recommendation rates as an institutional experience signal alongside the program-specific features that matter most for your ESL teaching goals.

Four Ways to Finish the Degree

Southeast Missouri State University

Instead of requiring every TESOL student to complete the same thesis or comprehensive examination, this ESL master's program at SEMO allows students to finish through a thesis, comprehensive exam, portfolio, or teaching portfolio, with reflection incorporated into the culminating experience. That gives students more control over whether their final work emphasizes research, synthesis, professional evidence, or classroom practice.

A Deeper Focus on Bilingual Instruction

Texas A&M University - College Station

Texas A&M stands apart through its concentrated focus on bilingual and dual-language education. The online TESOL curriculum includes Hispanic bilingual assessment, Spanish-English biliteracy, methods for dual-language programs, content-area instruction for Hispanic bilingual classrooms, and Spanish for bilingual and dual-language settings. Students can also choose between an M.Ed. and M.S., giving the program both professional and research-oriented routes.

A Route to Initial ESOL Certification

Georgia State University

Georgia State's online MAT is designed to lead toward initial K-12 ESOL teacher certification, making it relevant to career changers and aspiring teachers who would not qualify for many endorsement-focused TESOL master’s programs. The pathway can lead to Georgia’s renewable T5 induction certificate, and students may also add a Reading Endorsement for grades 6-12. Practical preparation is built into the degree through supervised classroom experiences, with mentor teachers and university faculty involved during the final semesters.

Attended: University of Cincinnati

The online distance learning program is amazing. It is a wonderful option for the nontraditional student. The professors are experts in their area and encourage/facilitate online learning and dialogue. Professors get back to you quickly and are easy to with. It is easy to post and submit assigments through the Blackboard feature on the UC website. Group work is even completed online with other students in your class.

Attended: The New School

By pursuing a master's degree in TESOL at the New School, I feel there are many advantages. This program is respected by ESL professors and teachers worldwide. I am already using what is being taught in our courses in the classroom with my own students. Being able to apply what I am learning in real-life situations is what sets the New School's graduate TESOL program apart from others. Even though I teach in South Korea, all courses are available online which makes learning much more convenient and... Read More

Rebecca J., Graduated 2015

Attended: Canisius University

Although Canisius College is a private school and viewed as a pricey college to attend, it really does provide convenience when furthering your education. For example, I wanted to continue working full time while receiving my master's. I did not want to apply to the cliche online institutions because I just didn't feel it was the right path for me. When I found out about Canisius' online master's programs, I immediately started researching the possible options I could take in order to benefit my... Read More

Treva Wagoner, Graduated 2014

Online advantages: The ability to do my work before, after, and between other life responsibilities. That worked for me - a full time teacher, wife, mother, church volunteer, and writer. The comment posting process forced me to participate which is something I may not have done otherwise. I caught up with current technology (almost) and learned how to use the internet more for real world purposes. Online disadvantages: I missed a warm bodied professor telling stories to help me learn a concept. During... Read More

The program for MAT in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages at Bridgewater State University has given me the opportunity to follow my passion. Since immigrating to the United States from Peru, where I worked as a Spanish teacher, I have lived in three states and I have been searching for the right school where I know that I matter. Upon moving to the Boston area, while I was doing my research on the right school, someone pointed me to Bridgewater State University because of its array of... Read More

Rocio R., Graduated 2018

Attended: Concordia University - Portland

This school enables anxiety and triggers depression. I was initially excited to move from Texas to Oregon to pursue a master's degree and begin a new chapter in my life! The professors (at least the ones in my program were, for the most part, great. My problem derives from the corrupt, administrative side of things. I applied for graduation in summer 2017, and it was approved by two (2) advisors (they fired one advisor and got a new one on my last term), and it was submitted to the registrars office.... Disillusioned Student, Graduated 2017

Attended: Merrimack College

Merrimack's Education graduate program is awful. The instructors are not the problem, but with the administration. Although, they should try to hire more instructors, so that students learn from different teachers. In the year that I have been attending Merrimack, I have had three different academic advisers, all of which do not know anything about the program. The woman in charge of licensing is all over the place and it is tough to contact. Just about everyone in my program has had an issue, and... Read More
