How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online certificate in paralegal degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few certificate in paralegal qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

Standout Features of the Best Online Paralegal Certificates: An Editorial Analysis

A Professional Portfolio of Legal Work

University of Central Florida

UCF stands out for a professional portfolio of legal work products that students create during training. The portfolio is a defined course outcome, so students finish with work they can discuss with prospective employers. That makes the program’s practical output visible before they enter a legal office. In a field where hiring teams need to assess legal writing and research skills, UCF’s course-built portfolio gives learners a concrete way to show what they practiced.

A Credit Map to the Certified Paralegal Exam

Florida International University

FIU's online Paralegal Studies Certificate gives applicants a specific way to map prior coursework to the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) Certified Paralegal exam. The program page says the 15-semester-hour certificate represents 225 clock hours and can combine with 45 semester hours of other coursework to meet NALA’s threshold.

A State-Specific Path to Legal Document Preparation

University of Arizona

UA’s Advanced Paralegal Certificate stands out for its Arizona-specific pathway for legal document preparers. Its foundational Paralegal Certificate carries 90 clock hours, and the advanced certificate adds 270. The university says the combined 360 clock hours equal 24 semester hours of legal education, which may help meet Arizona’s education requirement for certain legal occupations, including document preparers. (The two certificates also meet California’s education requirement for paralegals.)

Legal Expert Shares Guidance on Online Paralegal Programs

Headshot of Marcus Denning

Senior Lawyer at MK Law

My name is Marcus Denning, and I am the Senior Lawyer at MK Law. I hold a Juris Doctor, a Master's in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. As a lawyer and digital marketer, I know a lot about the business sector, where I had to deal with legal issues relating to environmental risk and compliance.

"On a daily basis, I work with paralegals on various aspects of legal proceedings, such as criminal litigation and commercial litigation. My personal experience of entering law included a transition from being a corporate CEO into a full-time litigator, and I realize the requirements of the legal profession both at the educational level and in the workplace that would define the career of a paralegal.

Online learning of practical skills can be effective when the programs combine live exercises with actual legal materials.

Individuals who obtain an online paralegal certificate may include career switchers interested in entering the legal profession without pursuing a law degree, administrative workers from law offices who want to formalize their abilities, and recent college graduates who find paralegal work a stable and diversified profession. Online study attracts most individuals, including those who balance work or family commitments.

Online learning of practical skills can be effective when the programs combine live exercises with actual legal materials. I have even witnessed an entirely online-trained paralegal who can perform legislative history research, draft affidavits, and prepare case chronologies with precision. The key is a program that extends beyond recorded lectures to incorporate live case file simulations, collaborative drafting platforms, and industry-standard legal research tools, such as Westlaw or LexisNexis. In their absence, the graduates can fail to cope with their initial job.

Early success, legal research, and drafting skills should be accompanied by proficiency in case management software, document automation systems, and e-discovery applications. The soft skills are equally important; the level of attention to detail, the capability of managing numerous deadlines without making mistakes, and clear communication with lawyers and clients can make a new paralegal stand out in a saturated market.

There must be a plan on how to balance coursework, certification preparation, and entry into the job market. Students ought to approach their schedule as though they are already within a billable-hour context, setting concrete daily goals to read, complete assignments, and practice tests."

EXPERT TIP

"The networking process must start prior to graduation by joining legal forums online, LinkedIn outreach to working paralegals, and information interviewing recruiters. This ensures that once the certificate is awarded, there is an instant momentum generated to get into the job market."

FAQs About Choosing the Best Online Paralegal Certificate Program

What Should You Compare When Looking For an Online Paralegal Certificate Program?

Paralegal studies programs teach students the essential functions of a paralegal's role, which include taking notes, preparing case exhibits, interviewing witnesses, and summarizing reports. Professors also stress the profession's limits because paralegals must serve a support role and not offer legal advice.

Applicants can find a range of online programs at all degree levels, including full-time, part-time, fully online, and a hybrid of online and in-person delivery. A certificate in paralegal studies is an educational option that offers a specialized one-year credential in the field. The next level is a two-year associate degree, which provides the most common educational pathway to becoming a paralegal. Bachelor's programs last four years and contain more advanced courses. Finally, master's degrees offer experienced paralegals an additional credential to potentially improve their marketability.

Paralegal certificates are designed to provide an intensive education in this discipline. They usually require 24-30 credit hours to complete and last 9-12 months for full-time students. Because online paralegal studies certificates are so concentrated, most have a similar curriculum. Classwork typically begins with an introductory course on law and related terminology, followed by classes on civil and criminal litigation, legal research and writing, and ethics. Although paralegal degree programs often include an internship, this practice is uncommon in certificate programs.

Many students entering a certificate program already hold a degree in another major and want to pivot careers. Although some participants only hold a high school diploma or GED, it's difficult to work as a paralegal with only a certificate and no other higher education. Instead, employers typically hire paralegals with one of the qualifications below:

  • An associate or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies
  • An associate or bachelor's degree in any major plus a certificate in paralegal studies

What Is the Difference Between Being Certificated and Certified as a Paralegal?

Graduates of a paralegal certificate program are considered "" a unique term that means the individual is qualified to work as a paralegal. But they can also choose to pursue a certification in order to add an extra credential to their resume. Certification isn't necessary, but it may make a candidate more appealing to some employers.

At least three organizations grant professional certifications to paralegals who pass an exam after completing their paralegal education. Graduates of certificate programs are eligible for any of the following certifications:

  • The (NALA) offers the Certified Paralegal credential.
  • The (NFPA) grants the CORE Registered Paralegal certification.
  • The (NALSP) provides the Professional Paralegal certification.

Alumni of ABA-approved or AAfPE member programs can take a certification exam offered by NALA, NFPA, or NALSP. Certified paralegals need to keep their certifications up-to-date by documenting continuing education. They may also need to take refresher exams periodically.

What Accreditations Should You Look for in a Paralegal Studies Program Online?

Ensuring the accreditation of the school you choose is vital with any program because it allows students to receive federal financial aid and indicate that a college provides high-quality education. However, institutional accreditation helps a student transfer their credits to another college with the same type of accreditation. You can rest assured that every single school we feature on our list is institutionally accredited.

Paralegal studies certificates can also earn recognition from two specialized organizations: the (ABA) and the (AAfPE). The ABA has a long history certifying the quality of law degrees and lawyers and creating guidelines for paralegal education programs. The AAfPE has also outlined specific eligibility criteria for paralegal programs. The ABA refers to program recognition as approval, and the AAfPE calls qualified programs members of its group. Some employers prefer to hire graduates from schools recognized by one of these agencies, so choosing an unrecognized program may impact your future employment opportunities.

Can I Be a Paralegal Without Any Degree?

Legal employers generally only hire paralegals who have at least an associate degree, but it can be in any major, plus a paralegal certificate. That's a must. The applicant can also secure work with a bachelor's degree in paralegal studies and may be hired with an associate degree or certificate in the subject.

What Career Paths Are Available With an Online Paralegal Certificate?

An online paralegal certificate qualifies alumni for just one job. But there's potential for variety within the paralegal field, and graduates of the same program can choose divergent career paths. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), earn a median annual salary of $62,890 throughout the next decade. However, the BLS does note that the job growth is currently at 0% (down from last year). It says, "Despite limited employment growth, about 40,800 openings for paralegals and legal assistants are projected each year, on average, over the decade."

Nearly three-quarters of paralegals work for private law firms and 12% work for government agencies. Within these work environments, they cover the entire range of legal issues. Paralegals require exacting attention to detail, clear writing skills, and empathy because they're often dealing with emotionally vulnerable clients. We've listed the top five legal practice areas for paralegals below, providing data on these specialty areas from NALA's

  • Civil litigation: Paralegals in this domain help litigators prepare for noncriminal trials. They interview witnesses, prepare and document exhibits, and review the opposing side's evidence during discovery.
  • Personal injury: These paralegals work for attorneys who specialize in seeking damages for clients. They also help lawyers prepare for trial, depose witnesses, and visit the scenes of accidents to document surroundings.
  • Family law: Attorneys in this field help clients with divorce proceedings and custody disputes. Family paralegals write summaries of depositions, prepare exhibits for trials in family court, keep meticulous notes of proceedings, and write official letters for lawyers to sign.
  • Criminal law: Paralegals can work on either side of the criminal justice system in the offices of prosecutors or defense attorneys, including public defenders. Either type might coordinate witness testimonies, take statements from investigators, and help lawyers perform mock trials.
  • Insurance: These employees may work directly for an insurance company or for a law firm contracted by an insurer. They collect patient medical information, document evidence gathered by fraud investigators, and summarize company policies for attorney review.

Paralegals typically follow the work arrangements of their employers, which might include flexible schedules with some days working from home but rarely results in fully remote work. Employees of litigators are typically needed in court to help with exhibits and offer in-person support. Any hybrid work arrangements will be subject to these requirements.

Is an Online Paralegal Certificate Worth It for Your Career Goals?

Higher education can be costly in terms of money and time. Even a year-long certificate program comes with trade-offs that differ for every individual. However, many graduates of paralegal programs have secured rewarding careers, so it's worth weighing the pros and cons with personal circumstances in mind.

  • Studying online can offer a wider choice of programs and more flexibility to balance responsibilities than enrolling in a campus-based program. This may appeal to certificate students who already work full-time.

Trade-Offs to Weigh in an Online Paralegal Certificate Program:

  • CareerExplorer's research reveals a very . In fact, they rate themselves in the bottom 11% of all U.S. jobs in terms of career happiness.
  • Although a program often takes only a year to complete, paralegals may need a degree in addition to a certificate in order to land a job. This can mean additional time and expense added to their college costs.
  • It may be difficult to network during an intensive online paralegal program because students may never meet their classmates or professors in person. Paralegal students can to partially offset this, but only if there's one in their area.

Great school, the curriculum, and books are the same as in schools where you go into extreme amounts of debt to graduate. They are accredited, and you go at your own pace. If you are good at time management, and self-directed, this school is exceptional. I am a busy working adult, and it allows me to learn new subject materials without having to leave my job or run around to a school after work. The affordability of this school also cannot be beaten. 100% in my books for sure.

And I already knew how to do legal research and understood how the law works! I've since been an attorney and a judge. I will always be grateful for my Penn Foster education!

I found the quality of education I received in College of Saint Mary's Paralegal Studies Graduate Certificate to be excellent. The classes were all taught by attorneys and prepared me very well to take a job as a legal assistant even before I graduated. The classes were structured to accommodate working students, with in-person class meetings every other Saturday and Sunday on campus in Omaha. This made it simple for a working adult to complete course work and attend classes. Many students in my... Read More

This program was very educational and hands on. I believe this program will help me transition into a paralegal program and has prepared me for success. This program is offered at night and enables you to keep working while attending this two semester certificate program. This programs is also American Bar approved which gives it more stigma.

The Windsor campus is HORRIBLE , I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL TO NOBODY, THEY ARE LAZY ALWAYS CHANGING THE STAFF ,TO THE FACT THAT YOU DON'T KNOW WHO TO REPORT TO, THE BEST THAT WERE THERE ARE GONE THE RULES ARE DUMB AND I MISSED SOME HOURS DUE LOSS OF MY FAMILY AND I DIDN'T GET MY CERTIFICATE OR GAVE ME ANY CREDIT FOR DOING MY WORK. THEY TELL YOU EVERYRTHING LAST MINUTE HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE

I am disappointed with the Everest College Board and all affiliate who have robbed so many well ambitious students of their real potentials, many of us are still lost in our shock of learning since graduation that most of the units were not properly accredited and highly marketable. I personally did well and made sacrifice whist attending to an austistic kid fulltime this wasn't fair as I expected to secure a legal job from the placement and didn't receive much help.I think we should be compensated...
