How We Rank "Most Affordable" Schools

%%YEAR%% Most Affordable Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team manually collects and verifies tuition data for every school on our lists, ensuring you see accurate, up-to-date costs whether you're pursuing an associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. To qualify, schools must offer fully online degrees, hold institutional accreditation, and have verifiable enrollment data through the National Center for Education Statistics. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize schools that offer a consistent tuition rate across programs at the same degree level, so you're not caught off guard by unexpected price differences between majors, and for graduate programs we go a step further by individually calculating program costs since credit requirements and fees vary widely.

Stories Behind the Cheapest Online Master's in Environment Science Degrees: An Editorial Analysis

The Most Customizable Conservation Pathway

University of Florida

UF may offer the most flexible ecosystem of environmental credentials on the list above. Students can pursue concentrations in areas such as Ecological Restoration, Geomatics, and Natural Resource Policy while also stacking graduate certificates in fields ranging from UAV mapping to fisheries science. Combined with the highest graduation rate (91%) and retention rate (98%) in the ranking, UF is one of the strongest examples of affordability paired with institutional performance.

Environmental Science Through a Hydrology Lens

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology

Unlike most schools on this list, NMT isn't trying to serve every type of environmental professional. The online Professional Master of Hydrology focuses narrowly on water systems, hydrology, geology, and geoscience. Students seeking training for sustainability or environmental management careers may find it too specialized, but those interested in water resources could find one of the most focused programs in the list.

The Human Side of Sustainability

UNC Greensboro

UNCG's approach is arguably the most interdisciplinary in the ranking. The curriculum incorporates economics, ethics, social equity, and environmental systems (rather than focusing just on natural science). The Climate Justice and Environmental Humanities certificates reinforce that broader perspective. This is likely a stronger fit for students interested in sustainability leadership, advocacy, or community engagement than traditional environmental science careers.

How to Turn an Online Environmental Science Master's Into Career Opportunities: Expert Advice

Headshot of Ellie Mortazavi (MS)

Environmental Program Manager and Stormwater Specialist

Ellie (Elham) Mortazavi is an environmental professional with more than 20 years of experience in stormwater management, water quality protection, and environmental compliance. She currently serves as Environmental Program Manager III for New Castle County in Delaware, where she oversees stormwater and drainage programs and helps ensure compliance with federal and state environmental regulations. Prior to her current role, Mortazavi spent more than two decades as the county's Stormwater Program Coordinator.

Environmental science is a hands-on field. What program features matter most for online master's students to gain practical experience?

"Nothing can take the place of real-world experience that can be gained through internships. Aside from the job connections that can be made, gaining practical on-the-job training makes a candidate more desirable to a future employer. It can also help one learn what they do and don’t like in the field and therefore help guide the path of future studies.

Paid internships can be very competitive but unpaid internships can be just as valuable in the long run simply due to the experience gained. I would encourage any student to reach out to prospective employers they are interested in working for as they may have opportunities, even if they are not advertised."

What distinguishes environmental science master's graduates who advance in their careers from those who struggle to gain traction?

"Graduates that advance in the field are those that:

  • Can readily adapt to the niche they have been placed in

  • Are eager to learn

  • Convey an interest in learning the next level of management and overall mission of the company."

What steps can students in environment science master's programs online take to maximize their return on investment while still in school?

"Students should shape their curriculum and take courses relevant to the career path they want to take. They can learn what that is by reviewing job openings they are interested in and reviewing what employers are looking for in a candidate."

"Take every opportunity to make connections in the field, including attending career fairs and taking advantage of co-ops, internships, and even volunteer opportunities."

In your opinion, how are online environmental science master's degrees viewed by employers today?

"The pandemic helped to shatter any stigma of an online education.  However, as previously stated, environmental science is a hands-on field, and it is beneficial to have in-person experience particularly with labs and field work. I would make sure that any online program had opportunities for in-person training."

What questions should students ask admissions advisors to determine whether a program will truly prepare them for environmental work?

"Students should ask advisors:

Whether or not the college has an advisory board consisting of professionals in the field guiding the program

Whether or not the program has relationships with employers to provide co-ops and internships

What the hiring rate is for recent graduates in the field."

Is a master's in environmental science a good long-term career choice?

"There will always be a demand for professionals in the environmental field."

They have great live online courses with wonderful teachers. This allows me to work full time while completing my masters degree from anywhere in the world.

I am in my second semester, but the program so far is way better than my undergraduate program, so I feel like I am learning so much. Information provided is well work the time and money. I started a program at another school ad switched because that program was horrible. Definitely a top rated program: The instructors are great and the work is very in depth!

Some of the pros include flexibility from the online courses but still having access to the social life of the university. The con of my program is that it is portfolio based. I would have liked a thesis or internship based program.

Finally, the workload for graduate-level studies is insufficient considering that students must utilize self-study... Read More

Roosevelt University's program of study in sustainability studies was very challenging/rewarding and so worth it. I am very happy with the program courses couple with purposeful field studies. The professors are very knowledgeable in the field and the Director of the program Michael Bryson, Ph.D. challenges students but he is very fair. His expectations are very high but this is the reason the program is successful. I earned a degree in this program and feel confident it was worth the time.

A very nice program and very good instructors. But in the end, I still can't get a job in this field. Paying $40 in student loans is daunting. So pick a good career based on reviews and statistics. Do your research carefully. There is no way out of a student loan!
