How We Rank "Best" Schools
The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online doctoral in psychology degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.
We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few doctoral in psychology qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

What Sets This Program Apart:
- Firsthand student feedback puts this online psychology doctorate — the PhD in Integral Transpersonal Psychology — at #1 in the country.
- The curriculum expands conventional Western psychology to include spiritual, transcendent, exceptional, and somatic dimensions of human experience, a whole-person framework.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray CIIS as a distinctive, deeply personal academic experience that resonates most with people drawn to integrative, unconventional approaches to learning and healing. Many praise faculty members as experienced, caring, and unusually invested, citing practical instruction, mentorship, and a strong sense of community. Several also highlight coursework that feels applicable, intellectually expansive, and grounded in real-world practice. The sharpest complaints center on cost and administration. For some, high tuition is hard to justify in an already expensive city, and repeated financial aid delays created severe stress. A few reviewers also question how directly the education translates into stable employment after graduation.

What Sets This Program Apart:
- HCU's EdD in Executive Leadership in Mental Health and Human Services is not a traditional psychology doctorate — it trains administrators and executives for mental health agencies, faith-integrated behavioral health programs, and church-affiliated counseling ministries.
- Clinical, academic, and spiritual considerations are treated as co-equal pillars of leadership preparation, with a Christian whole-person framework applied to healing and wholeness outcomes in human services organizations.
Student Review Summary: Reviews of Houston Christian University lean positive, driven largely by praise for small classes, approachable professors, and a close-knit campus that many describe as personal, supportive, and easy to navigate. Students often say faculty are invested beyond the classroom, offering practical guidance, career encouragement, and flexibility for working adults. The strongest frustrations center on cost, uneven advising, and administrative disorganization, especially in financial aid, scheduling, and interdepartment communication. Several reviewers also note limited course options, night-heavy schedules, and a distinctly conservative Christian culture that can feel welcoming to some, but off-putting or restrictive to others.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Saybrook University Hybrid Online as a highly distinctive but uneven experience. Many describe deeply engaged faculty, intimate classes, and a hybrid format that makes online learning feel collaborative rather than isolating. Residential conferences, discussion-based coursework, and flexible research approaches are repeatedly praised, especially by reviewers who value personalized mentorship and the ability to shape work around specific interests. The strongest criticisms focus on institutional disorganization: shifting requirements, inconsistent faculty expectations, canceled classes, weak dissertation support, and anxiety around ongoing restructuring. Cost is another persistent concern, with several reviewers questioning whether the high tuition is matched by administrative consistency or long-term value.

Regent University has very caring faculty. I have enjoyed my time here thus far and can't wait to continue on in my program. This school tries to get you to develop yourself personally; very holistic approach.
Student Review Summary: Reviews of Regent University Online are largely favorable, with many describing attentive professors, responsive advisors, and a format that can work well for busy adults when expectations are clear. Students frequently praise the rigor, faith-based approach, and the sense that online learners still receive personal support, detailed feedback, and access to useful resources. The sharpest criticism centers on administration rather than teaching. Negative reviews cite disorganized advising, transcript and billing problems, weak communication, and transfer-credit surprises. Some also found the accelerated eight-week structure overwhelming, the religious integration too pervasive or politically narrow, and the cost high for an online experience.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of California Coast University are overwhelmingly favorable, driven by high ratings and repeated praise for a format that fits around full-time work, family obligations, military service, and career transitions. Many describe the coursework as unexpectedly demanding, with substantial writing, proctored or tightly structured exams, and a level of rigor they felt matched traditional schools. Affordability stands out just as strongly, especially interest-free payment plans, transfer-friendly policies for prior credits, and the chance to finish without heavy debt. The clearest caution is accreditation: several reviewers said employer acceptance was fine, but some ran into transfer, licensing, or graduate-admission barriers.

Supportive mentorship, diverse cohorts, and flexible formats are recurring strengths, especially for those balancing jobs or family responsibilities. Several also say the education builds confidence and professional readiness. The most serious complaints focus on administration rather than teaching: poor communication, disorganization, delayed responses, scheduling problems, unclear assignments, transcript or enrollment errors, and weak transparency around costs. Student Review Summary: Reviews of Keiser University are sharply divided, but the strongest pattern is frustration over cost and administration. Many students praise caring professors, flexible scheduling, small classes, and the one-course-at-a-time format, saying it helps them balance work, parenting, military service, or health challenges. Those positives are often overshadowed by complaints about steep tuition, confusing financial aid, aggressive admissions, and being blocked from classes, transcripts, or graduation over balances. Several reviewers also describe disorganization, rushed pacing, and uneven teaching quality. Even some satisfied students admit the school can work well only if you monitor paperwork closely and can comfortably absorb the expense.

Student Review Summary: Reviews describe a sharply divided experience. Many praise the flexible online format, eight-week terms, affordable tuition, and strong support for military families and veterans, saying the workload can be rigorous, writing-heavy, and manageable with discipline. Positive reviews also highlight caring professors, prompt feedback, and career preparation. The recurring complaints are more specific and severe: inconsistent advising, slow or confusing communication, financial aid and billing problems, and classes that often feel self-taught. A major fault line is the university’s pervasive Christian integration. Supporters value it as transparent and formative, while critics say it crowds out subject depth, limits critical thinking, and can feel forced in unrelated assignments.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Adler University are largely favorable, with many describing caring professors, small classes, and a curriculum that feels practical, rigorous, and closely tied to real-world work. Students repeatedly praise the school’s strong emphasis on social justice, diversity, community engagement, and culturally responsive training, saying those values shape both coursework and field experience. Online learners also highlight flexible scheduling, responsive support, and useful technology. The clearest frustrations center on high tuition, weak scholarship and funding support, inconsistent administration, and bottlenecks around practicum, internship, scheduling, and graduation processes. Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Touro University Worldwide as a practical online option that works especially well for busy adults who need flexibility, manageable pacing, and comparatively affordable tuition. Many describe responsive professors, supportive enrollment staff, and coursework that is challenging enough to feel worthwhile without becoming unmanageable. The sharpest criticism is aimed at administration rather than teaching: repeated complaints cite slow or poor communication, financial aid problems, weak practicum support, and unclear requirements that left some feeling misled. Student Review Summary: Reviews describe Simmons as highly uneven, with strong praise for small classes, accessible professors, and a close-knit environment that helps students build relationships, find mentorship, and tap into Boston-area internships and professional networks. Many positive reviewers say the school is rigorous, career-focused, and especially effective when faculty are engaged. The sharpest criticism centers on several online offerings, where reviewers report outdated materials, confusing or secretive testing, weak communication, and poor administrative follow-through. Cost is the most consistent complaint across programs. Some also found the school’s gender-focused culture empowering, while others felt it narrowed classroom discussion or created ideological pressure.

Supporters describe attentive professors, small classes, flexible online or hybrid formats, and coursework that feels practical enough to use immediately at work. Many say the schedule made school possible while balancing jobs and family, and they valued faculty accessibility, career-focused training, and diverse peer networks. Compare the Best Online Doctoral Psychology Degrees
Median earnings add a comparative outcome to a ranking otherwise driven by student experience, and for a doctoral psychology decision they speak to where each degree can carry you.
Graduates of these online psychology doctorates move into research careers, consulting, university teaching, and organizational leadership, so the earning range from $70,831 at Saybrook to $102,166 at CIIS reflects different professional destinations rather than a single job market.
CIIS earns the most while Alliant, Adler, and TCS all clear $95,000, which means strong earnings reach well past the top of the ranking. Capella shows the harder truth: a 3.76 review rating and $86,768 in earnings can coexist.
Match the program to the role you want, then let the earnings figures break the tie.
A recommendation rate measures the percentage of reviewers who would recommend the school to others, and on this psychology doctoral ranking it rewards judgment more than enthusiasm.
CIIS, HCU, and Saybrook each hold 100%, while NU sits at just 35%, so the gap between the top of this list and its bottom is wider than the review ratings alone suggest. The rates also compress a range of experiences, as UofM earns an 86% recommendation rate despite a modest 3.08 overall rating, meaning many reviewers found enough value to endorse the school even where their broader experience drew criticism.
Treat the rate as a peer check on fit rather than a verdict on quality, and read it alongside each program's reviews before you commit.
Standout Features of the Best Online Doctoral Psychology Degrees: An Editorial Analysis
A Social Justice Practicum Built Into the First Year
Adler University
Most online industrial-organizational psychology doctorates stay inside the workplace, but Adler sends its doctoral students into the community during their first year. The Social Interest Practicum requires 200 hours with mission-driven organizations, a nonclinical field commitment that is nearly unheard of in this specialization.
The curriculum carries the same orientation, aligning with SIOP standards while pushing past standard I-O foundations into followership, systems thinking, advocacy strategy, and public management. For students who want organizational psychology to reach beyond corporate clients, Adler is the program that actually schedules it.
A Doctorate Designed Around World Events
The Chicago School
The Chicago School's PhD in International Psychology is the only program on this ranking that trains psychologists for careers across borders, with a curriculum built around global social justice, multinational leadership, and the psychological effects of world events.
The built-in international field experiences are the standout, since most online psychology doctorates contain no applied component at all. Access to Washington, D.C. puts students near embassies, NGOs, and policy environments: the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and international development agencies.
A Behavior Analysis PhD With Faculty Mentorship at Its Core
Simmons University
Simmons treats doctoral research as the opening move rather than the finish line. Every PhD in Behavior Analysis student is placed into a faculty lab at admission, with weekly lab meetings tied to shared research interests, ongoing methodological discussion, and dissertation development that begins immediately.
Outcomes back the structure, with a 72% graduation rate in the top 9% of schools nationally. Practitioners who want research identity without leaving their jobs get both here.
Ask an Expert About an Online Doctorate in Psychology
To help prospective students understand the nuanced realities of earning a doctorate in psychology online, we spoke with a clinical psychologist and supervisor who provides insight into what it takes and how to navigate choosing the best program for your needs.
"I'm Dr. Chelsea Sarai, a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder of the Brentwood Therapy Collective, a group practice in Los Angeles specializing in providing therapy for adults and clinical training for budding therapists. I’m passionate about expanding access to high-quality mental health training and am deeply attuned to the unique challenges of gaining a doctoral degree in psychology."
In your view, what makes psychology uniquely suited, or especially challenging, for doctoral study in an online format?
"Psychology is, at its core, the study of human connection — of how we relate to ourselves and to others. That makes studying it in a digital format both convenient and yet paradoxical. The online format can offer access and flexibility, but it can also create a sense of disconnection in a field that depends so much on presence, attunement, and embodied learning.
I'm curious about how we create depth in a space built for convenience. When done well, online programs must compensate for that absence of physical proximity with intentional design, meaningful mentorship, and opportunities for real-world human contact."
For students considering an online doctorate, how important is the distinction between a PhD and PsyD?
"I think it truly depends on the curriculum that is being offered in both of these programs. PhD programs are notoriously more research oriented and PsyD programs are traditionally more focused on clinical work. One is not better than the other, these programs offer different ways of addressing psychology. When considering a program, it is crucial to envision what you are looking to gain and hopefully that clarity will guide you in your degree choice."
What are the key factors students should consider when evaluating the clinical practicum or internship components?
"When considering a practicum or clinical site, students should not just focus on accumulating hours, but instead focus on which site will help them become the therapist they truly want to be. I believe that high quality supervision and the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients are an important asset to a practicum site.
Clinical training is about gaining skills but also about developing one's therapeutic presence, style and approach. Something I often remind my mentors is that they are only in training for a few years, hopefully they pick sites that will allow them to be deeply immersed in developing the skills they find truly valuable."
In what ways are emerging trends such as teletherapy and digital tools changing what employers expect from today’s psychology graduates?
"Teletherapy demands a new form of connection, one that I believe research is going to have to catch up with. We need to learn how to read silences through screens and hold space in the absence of physical cues."
"I believe that most employers want psychologists who are not only clinically competent but culturally and technologically fluent since we are living in a society that is quite informed by technology."
What misconceptions do students often have about online psychology doctorates?
"One of the biggest misconceptions is that online learning is easier, more detached, or somehow less serious. In fact, it often requires more structure, more inner discipline, and more initiative. Another myth is that the online format will remove all logistical barriers, when in truth, clinical placements, supervision, and licensure remain very much grounded in the real world. You can study from anywhere, but you still have to show up consistently and relationally."
What advice do you have starting an online doctoral program in psychology?
"Don’t confuse independence with isolation. Even online, you must build your village — mentors, peers, supervisors, colleagues. Psychology is not something we study from a distance. It lives in the body, in the stories we carry, in the relationships we cultivate.
With that being said, being engaged in one's own therapy is my biggest piece of advice for budding psychologists. You cannot guide others through the terrain of their emotional lives without first navigating your own."
EXPERT TIP
"Your personal work will not only make you a better clinician; it will anchor you, stretch you, and humble you. The doctoral journey is not just academic, it is deeply personal. And like all journeys of transformation, it’s not meant to be walked alone."
FAQs About Choosing an Online Doctoral Psychology Program
What Specializations Should You Look for in an Online Psychology Doctorate?
Concentration options across the field range from practice-facing to research-facing. Clinical, counseling, and health psychology tracks suit readers weighing eventual licensure, while industrial-organizational and media psychology serve those headed for consulting and applied workplace research.
Developmental psychology, behavior analysis, and educational psychology open doors in schools, clinical service systems, and applied research settings. Some programs also stake out distinctive territory at the doctoral level, including transpersonal and somatic psychology, international psychology, and sport or executive leadership angles.
A specialization should map to a real career destination before you commit to a program, so compare the concentration menu against where you want the degree to take you.
How Long Does It Take to Complete an Online Doctorate in Psychology?
Completion time varies by program structure, pacing, and dissertation requirements, but most online psychology doctorates take three to five years. Programs with embedded research support or structured residencies may help students progress more efficiently through the dissertation phase.
A dissertation structured around sequential milestones shortens time to degree for online psychology doctoral students. Researchers at a nonprofit, fully online university compared 430 psychology PhD graduates who completed their degrees between 2013 and 2020, and the cohort using a sequentially structured dissertation model than those under a traditional model, with the strongest effect reported in the study.
When you compare programs, look at how each one sequences dissertation milestones and mentor feedback, because that structure appears to move completion times more than generic pacing promises do.
Should You Expect a Dissertation in an Online Psychology Doctoral Program?
Most programs do require a dissertation or at least an equivalent capstone. Some culminate in a traditional scholarly dissertation, while others provide extensive dissertation resources alongside live or virtual residencies. Other programs emphasize applied research or practice-based scholarship.
The dissertation pays off most when supervision is active. In a of clinical and counseling psychology dissertations, researchers found the documents most likely to become peer-reviewed journal articles were supervised by highly research-productive advisors and ran shorter than 180 pages; advisor productivity was the deciding factor, while program accreditation status added nothing.
A dissertation still stands a real chance of publication, and earlier work from the same team found that when clinical and counseling dissertations were published, they landed in respected journals and drew substantial citations.
Basically, who you work with matters as much as what you write, so examine faculty research output and mentoring structure before you enroll.
Student Reviews of Online Psychology Programs
My instructors have all been very thorough and supportive. My dissertation chair has been extremely professional and has efficiently guided me every step of the way. He will be providing great networking connections when I am done later this year. I have learned a lot on my topic and I feel I can effectively enter the workforce at a new level after graduation.

Unfortunately, my experience was marked by unethical grading practices, lack of transparency, and dismissive faculty conduct. For example: One instructor graded against rubrics, provided no meaningful feedback, and used authoritarian tactics to avoid accountability. Attempts to address concerns were met with misleading directions and misuse of authority, leaving students unsupported.
Many peers have considered formal complaints, suggesting ongoing issues. Students deserve respectful engagement and... Read More

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Excelsior University before continuing my academic journey at Touro University, where I completed my Master of Science in Forensic Psychology. My experience at Touro was exceptional from the start. The curriculum was well-structured, academically rigorous, and easy to follow, allowing me to fully engage with the material while balancing other responsibilities.
What stood out most was the quality of the professors and the overall support system. The... Read More

Capella is not transparent. When there is a problem you receive absolutely no help. They hire some people that are not qualified to teach. There is administration is careless, uneducated and unhelpful. I received my masters degree in psychology and started my doctorate, but now I am switching departments, because I have already spent a lot of money in the doctoral degree in psychology. I could not be more unhappy!

The university was great. My professors were incredible and cared about student success. The job market is rough but my experience with Walden University was exceptional.
I I had secured a doctoral position but it fell through because of the government shutdown.

I have completed a few online degrees and worked in higher education and this is by far the worst learning environment I have had. The library is a canvas course and I am currently in an “interactive class of one. My resources were poorly explained to me as a new student, there is no such thing as live supports, and the learning systems are lacking.

I rarely write reviews, but I wanted to address some of the misleading reviews and the plethora of unjustified tears that have been shed all over this site. Many of the poor reviews stem from the individual failing to do their research prior to enrolling in a program. For example, the University does not hide the fact that their PhD Psychology program is not APA accredited, and therefore not accepted if one wants to practice as a licensed psychologist. The same goes for the required accreditations... Read More

After exploring many avenues to attend a PSYD program, I enrolled at California Southern University. This was the best decision, and I am delighted and motivated to participate in the Online classes. My experience in this academic institution has been phenomenal. Currently, I am taking Clinical Interviewing, and the assigned textbook comes with an access code to videos. The videos and the content are fabulous, and I find myself actively learning from the assigned text. Also, the videos and other... Read More

I have mixed feelings about GCU's PhD program. I have completed all of the core curriculum, but will be withdrawing from GCU before entering the dissertation classes. I obtained my bachelor's and MBA online from two different schools, and the GCU instruction was similar to other schools. The online instructors act more as facilitators, rather than teachers. While this was fine in the other degree programs, this did not really work at GCU with doctoral students taking core courses, while working on... Read More

Northcentral is incredible. I was super nervous prior to attending, but once I started, I immediately understood how lucky I was to be attending. I have jobs and children, so on campus Ph.D. was going to be difficult. I was very hesitant about online programs. Now I am no longer nervous. Furthermore, the one to one instruction is unreal. Dr. Streit, my first professor, was beyond incredible. I am so impressed with her ability to help me focus on dissertation ideas, develop those ideas, and being... Read More

Use this as a warning. Plan on the career taking an extra year and a few thousand dollars more. Went in after being told it would be 80k and 4 years. Here I am at 94k with Lord only knows how much longer. See the thing is after you are done with academics you will need an extra 4 courses at 3k each. Or maybe 8 because if they need the money they will put you on a "supplemental" course. These are created to help you with the dissertation but who needs 12 weeks to get through 1 chapter? Or 20 weeks,... Read More

I recently complete Touro University's MFT program and have just been accepted into their doctoral program PsyD. I researched carefully before choosing a university. As a parent and working professional, I needed flexibilty but wanted a solid education. I needed a high level of value and I did not want to graduate with $75+ in loans like so many of my colleagues. I also required an MFT program that was regionally accredited as my state requires it for licensure. Touro's program was a great fit, hitting... Read More

How I wish that I did not have to write this but I am at the end of my rope. I began my doctorate program with high hopes but the subjectivity of the grading is ruining my GPA. On top of that, I have to beg me send repeated emails to get any answers from my councilor and several professors. Incredibly disappointed. I believe I will need to change schools.

My experience with Saybrook is that it is very disorganized. Things change A LOT. Requirements, teachers, other faculty, standards, the online class platform. The general culture is pretty supportive, laid back, and friendly, with looser standards, something like you might expect from a West Coast school teaching transpersonal and humanistic psychology and mind-body medicine. But then you get that one prof who is a stickler for detail. I've been told my writing is amazing, touching, moving, I wish... Read More

I have started the psychology program and it is very rigorous. There is a lot of work. Everyone in the school has been kind and ethical . I have a Master's degree from a highly regarded brick and mortar school and I find this school more challenging. It is well managed and organized. As an administrator of a behavioral health program, I appreciate being able to attend this school online with other mature students from all over the world who have substantial clinical experience.

Capella us a RIP off. I finished the courses for the PhD in 1 1/2 years. I spent the next 2+ years trying to pass the dissertation phase. Also I think they should prepare students at the beginning of the program focusing on the dissertation. The residencies is a waste of time with no help in the process. Each Prodfedor has their own way of completing the format or editing. Then you have to start all over again. Then they change it again. I maxed out of loans. And so far paying 16,000 out of pocket.... Read More

My experience thus far has fantastic. The professors have been attentive, interactive, and knowledgeable. Actually, my last professor earned her PhD from UC Berkeley and was a content expert in course material. I especially prefer the online format with focus on one class per eight weeks, consecutively. I would rate this college as a C. It has all the stuff to get you a degree in Psychology. Is it the best program? Not by a long shot. It does not prepare you to write the dissertation and does not give you a sturdy foundation in research. I completed all the course work for Psychology/ Criminal Justice and I believe they need more research classes since a PsyD is a research based degree. The beginning of the program was well organized and seemed to go smoothly. I am in dissertation phase and it seems... Read More

I earned both a masters and doctorate degree from Cappella. I thought it was a great school and much more challenging than I first anticipated. The instructors were great; very professional and caring. Many of my instructors at Cappella were teaching part time and had other prestigious careers. I would absolutely recommend Cappella to any working adult going back to school.
