How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online master's in marriage & family therapy degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few master's in marriage & family therapy qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Palo Alto University skew favorable, with praise centering on engaged faculty, accessible staff, and training that feels practical rather than abstract. Many reviewers say the instruction is rigorous, memorable, and tied to real-world practice, while small classes, cohort-based learning, and responsive advising make it easier to build connections and get help quickly. Flexible online and evening formats are also valued for fitting around work. The recurring frustration is cost: high tuition, limited scholarship support, and expensive local housing come up often. A smaller set of reviews also point to inconsistent instruction, changing requirements, and occasional technology problems.

Online Degree:

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • Bellevue's online master's runs as an accelerated program in which students take one course at a time inside a fixed cohort, giving working adults a built-in peer network through the entire marriage and family studies master's.
  • The degree requires no internship and no prior human services experience, removing two barriers to entry.
  • The curriculum prepares students to work with children and families in service, community, and agency settings, and the school states outright that this is a non-licensure program.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Bellevue University as highly variable, with strong marks for flexibility, career-friendly scheduling, and coursework that often feels rigorous, practical, and immediately usable on the job. Many reviewers praise responsive professors, engaging online discussions, and support that helped them balance school with work, military service, and family obligations. The sharpest criticism centers on administration rather than teaching: frequent advisor turnover, poor communication, financial aid errors, transcript and enrollment mistakes, and confusion over transfer credit or program fit. Several reviewers also object to required signature courses, repetitive discussion-board work, high costs, and, in some cases, concerns about accreditation or employer recognition.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Arizona State University, Online as a school with real strengths in flexibility, usability, and scale, but an uneven return on investment. Many students praise responsive advisors, caring professors, smooth online platforms, and accelerated courses that make it possible to keep working, parenting, or traveling while finishing a degree. Several also say the curriculum helped them feel career-ready through research, internships, and practical assignments. The sharpest complaints center on cost, surprise fees, weak advising, and inconsistent instruction. In the harshest accounts, prerecorded lectures, limited faculty interaction, delayed grading, and compressed course formats made some students feel they were paying premium prices for a largely self-taught experience.

Student Review Summary: Reviewers describe an education that can work well for disciplined, independent learners, especially those balancing jobs and family, but they sharply disagree on whether the payoff justifies the cost. Supporters say the workload is real, with constant papers, discussion posts, and accelerated deadlines that reward self-motivation, while the online format offers life-changing flexibility and, for some, tangible career gains. Detractors focus on high tuition, surprise balances, shifting counselors, weak or inconsistent instructor support, and a heavy reliance on group work that can drag down grades. A recurring frustration is poor transferability and skepticism about how the credential is viewed by employers.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Abilene Christian University are largely favorable, driven by high ratings and repeated praise for unusually personal faculty relationships. Many describe professors and advisers as accessible long after graduation, offering mentoring, recommendations, prayer, research support, and career guidance that feels deeply individual rather than transactional. Online learners also highlight flexibility, responsive support, and strong instruction. The most consistent drawbacks involve cost, uneven financial aid, limited class options, occasional weak job or internship support, and mixed administrative responsiveness. A smaller set of negative reviews raises sharper concerns about restrictive religious requirements, transferability of credits, outdated policies, and inconsistent academic quality.

Compare the Best Online Marriage and Family Therapy Master's Degrees

Median earnings around five years after graduation add an outcome lens to the MFT ranking above that's built on student feedback.

Across the five programs reporting figures, as shown in the graph above, graduates range from $54,422 at Capella to $81,809 at NU, a spread of more than $27,000. NU pairs the highest figure with the list's steepest tuition, so the earnings premium comes at a real cost, while Lamar posts stronger median earnings than Capella at a fraction of the price.

Because the degrees on this page lead to different destinations, including licensure-track clinical practice and non-licensure family services work, compare each online MFT program's career structure alongside the earnings figure before you decide.

A recommendation rate measures the school overall, and it shows where student goodwill runs deepest.

Every reviewed student at Palo Alto and ASU would recommend their school, and Regent earns 93% from reviewers despite ranking #10 on rating, a reminder that sentiment and score do not always move together.

The measure also compresses real differences in experience: USC holds 92% recommendations while its 3.96 rating trails the top three by more than half a point.

Use the rate to judge broad approval, then read the individual reviews to see whether the experiences behind it match what you want from an online marriage and family therapy master's degree.

FAQs About Choosing the Best Online Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy

What Should You Know Before Choosing an Online Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy?

A master's program in MFT covers theoretical, clinical, and research practices associated with providing professional therapy to couples and families. With the traditional nuclear family becoming less common, students learn how to work with individuals from a range of relational contexts. Coursework and practical hours, in turn, train graduates in techniques meant to help families face life changes, mental health issues, or other challenging circumstances.

An online master's in MFT is designed to prepare students for a career in counseling and equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and experience to take state licensure exams.

Being accepted into an MFT program may be slightly more difficult when compared to other postbaccalaureate disciplines because students may have to meet unique criteria, such as demonstrating their prior real-world experience in the field. While each school typically sets its own admission requirements for graduate school, some competitive MFT counseling programs expect applicants to pass an interview and have a minimum B grade in child development, sociology, or counseling at the undergraduate level. In general, students will need to meet the following conditions in order to apply to an MFT master's program:

  • A bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • 2-5 letters of recommendation describing the candidate's ability to achieve a graduate MFT credential, along with a personal statement or essay
  • GRE scores in at least the 50th percentile for each of the verbal, quantitative, and writing sections

Are you unsure about pursuing an MFT degree? Consider exploring other , such as a .

What Courses Are Included in an Online Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy Program?

The curriculum for an online MFT master's includes classes in psychology, sociology, and clinical research, to name a few. In some cases, students can elect coursework that covers the legal and ethical aspects of providing therapy in familial settings, as well as the challenges associated with serving vulnerable populations. They may also choose classes that focus on specializations — such as medication, substance abuse, and sexuality — while developing skills in communication, research, and negotiation. Below is a list of courses students can expect to take in an MFT master's program.

  • Couples Therapy: Students take this class to prepare for treating couples undergoing marital or premarital conflict. They familiarize themselves with various theoretical perspectives, drawing on research-based methods to understand different forms of intervention. This class may also cover how relationships between couples have changed over time.
  • Group Counseling for Children and Adolescents: This elective course focuses on group therapy and emphasizes working with children, adolescents, and their families. Students study how to manage and lead group sessions to address the environmental, behavioral, and cognitive factors shaping relationships between siblings and parents. Learning techniques may include role-playing, mock interviews, traditional lectures, and discussion.
  • Medical Family Therapy: When families face challenging medical circumstances, a trained MFT professional helps them address difficult emotions and practical considerations. Students in this class train in family systems theory, learning how to support individuals coping with a loved one's illness or navigating palliative care.
  • Psychopathology and Diagnosis: Students enrolled in this course may practice how to diagnose a range of mental health disorders. This includes learning how to identify unique behavior related to schizophrenia, bipolarism, and depression, while also treating individuals through a mixture of medication and therapy.
  • Trauma and Crisis Counseling: This class focuses on the psychology of trauma, particularly as it relates to factors such as abuse and neglect. In addition to learning how these challenges affect everyday behavior in adults, adolescents, and children, students focus on remedying specific conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Importantly, online coursework in an accredited MFT master's can deliver the same learning gains as the classroom version. A compared outcomes for students in a marriage and family therapy program who took the same multicultural training course in classroom-based and online sections and found student gains did not significantly differ between the two. The first published evidence that online learning does not compromise the effectiveness of this kind of MFT training.

How Do You Meet Licensure Requirements After an Online Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy?

Licensure helps ensure that practicing MFT professionals are effectively trained to offer counseling services. As of 2009, all 50 states require MFT providers to have this stamp of approval.

To apply for licensure, MFT graduates must go through their state's . They need a master's degree and — depending on the jurisdiction — 2,000-4,000 hours of postgraduate clinical experience to meet licensure requirements. Applicants also need to pass board exams and renew their qualification annually, which usually involves completing specific courses and paying a fee. It's important to note that states' licensing boards do not rely on certification from the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, a professional association that provides resources and information to individuals interested in this field.

What Clinical Training Is Required in an Online Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy Program?

Students complete roughly 500 supervised clinical hours as part of an MFT master's degree. This involves interacting directly and indirectly with patients in various clinical settings — such as interviews, assessments, and interventions. In general, full-time MFT master's students spend 20 hours a week completing practicum requirements.

Many online MFT programs help distance learners gain placement at a clinic in their area of residence. Online students typically research where they can complete practicum hours before working with a dedicated faculty member during the application process. It's important to note that some programs may expect online learners to make their own practicum arrangements.

Couples therapy delivered over video produces outcomes comparable to in-person work, which is the core evidence behind the clinical hours you will log remotely. A assigned couples to the same behavioral couples education program by videoconferencing or face to face and found therapeutic alliance ratings did not differ between groups, while relationship satisfaction and mental health improved over time in both conditions. The supervised clinical hours in an online MFT master's therefore prepare you for a telehealth practice.

What Can You Do With an Online Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy?

MFTs may work in schools, hospitals, outpatient centers, and private practice clinics. A master's degree in this field — along with licensure — is designed to prepare graduates to offer counseling services to families and couples. They can also pursue careers in individual and family services, an economic sector that added 165,004 jobs in the last 12 months, according to data from , a data analytics company. Specifically, they may find work with or in parts of the country where demand for their services is high — such as California, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.

Below is a list of potential career paths for MFT master's graduates, with salary and job outlook data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):

  • require licensure and provide short-term, solution-based services to individuals addressing challenges, including alcoholism, mood disorders, or marital distress, to name a few. They typically help children, parents, and couples identify sources of stress and develop coping mechanisms, working one-on-one with clients and in group settings.
  • research the emotional and environmental factors that shape various kinds of human behavior. They publish studies and typically look for ways to improve therapy practices, with some also providing clinical services. While an MFT master's program provides training in psychology, this career requires students to complete a doctoral degree in psychology in most cases.
  • help children and adolescents navigate various social and behavioral challenges. These professionals identify challenges students face, such as neglect and abuse, and provide them with resources for additional support. They also help prepare students for life after high school.
  • play a crucial role in assessing and communicating genetic information to individuals and families, aiding them in making informed decisions about their health and hereditary risks. They collect comprehensive medical histories, evaluate genetic data, and provide counseling on testing options, risks, and benefits. Additionally, genetic counselors offer emotional support to clients affected by test results and stay updated on developments in genetics. These professionals work across various specialty areas, such as prenatal, cancer, and pediatrics, ensuring that clients receive tailored guidance and care based on their specific needs.

Additionally, teletherapy experience is now a realistic expectation of MFT training rather than a bonus. In a , researchers tracked the transition of university MFT training clinics, serving master's and doctoral trainees, to teletherapy and found most cases converted to virtual delivery, with implications drawn for student trainees and supervision at four systemic levels. Ask prospective programs how they deliver and supervise teletherapy placements, because the training clinics that feed this field have already moved that direction.

What Is the Job Outlook for Marriage and Family Therapists With an Online Master's?

Openings for MFT providers are increasing at a higher rate than other client counseling areas. In turn, the BLS estimates that there will be through the next decade. These findings correspond to data from Burning Glass, which shows that the job outlook for individual and family services is projected to increase by 14% in the next decade. To put this into perspective, the BLS shows that the average growth rate for all occupations is 3%.

One would hope that a school wants to set students up for success and advising is provided from 101-done, meaning first class to graduation. Not, NU-they are genuinely in "it" for the money. Think of it as a corporation and not a school.

PROS: You can work and go to school, COAMFTE certified, and teachers are responsive.
CONS: Required readings/videos are outdated (in my opinion, this violates the Code of Ethics), Advisors do not always respond, professors do not create classes and are moderators more... Read More

My experience at National University (formerly Northcentral) has been very positive. I know there are a lot of negative reviews and I was hesitant when I enrolled, but I want to add my experience to the conversation. I am in the MFT Master's program, have done very well (3.98 GPA), and have had only positive experiences with all of my professors and advisors. I've never had any difficulty with the financial aid or student advisors; everyone replies within a few days via email. I completed my undergraduate... Read More

I had an exceptional experience with Touro in the MFT program. it is a great fit for working students, single parents, people in rural areas like myself, who do not have access to traditional education options, or anyone who cannot attend traditional classes in person. Of course, one has to be very motivated and willing to take an active role in the education process, with the degree being done fully online. Touro is very upfront that they do not provide practicum placement for students- they provide... Read More

The overall values of TUW is great however for it being an online school, you would hope they would have a bigger and better with supportive staff especially in your final year. The instructors are fantastic, but the MFT staff could do so much better. It seems very understaffed not as supportive as it could be, lacks in following up meaning when a student has an urgent message to be answered it takes 3 days before hearing back. Its not as consistent. It could be better. If you want consistency, strong... Read More

Currently very frustrated. Technical support is either 0 or 100%. I just spent 30 minutes on hold at first in place to get a recording saying there were technical difficulties and a hang up. All of my professors have been great but some do not have IA support and let's say if I weren't a very good student I wouldn't become a good one through feedback and constructive criticism. I am learning from the materials presented but am very disenchanted with the program right now.

The Marriage and Family program is a quality program and school. It is not easy, but you'll learn a lot. I am just about finished with my second practicum course. If you want to do your MFT coursework here, it is important that you know you will be required to record sessions (audio and video) with your clients. You'll need to get the clients permission to record. All schools are not like this, but because Touro has COAMFTE certification, it is a mandatory requirement that you do that. You'll also... My enrollment counselor Kim was fantastic. She was very thorough in answering my questions from the beginning. Her willingness to take the time to answer my questions in depth from the very first email response really caught my attention. (Other schools were just giving me what I could find online or less than that and wanting to arrange a call during my work hours). Additionally, she was able to find an awesome scholarship for me, which helped seal the deal because my concern was finding a great... Read More

The biggest compliment to the school is the orientation that I was required to complete before beginning my first class. Most professors have been great and informative, but a few have been lazy and did not really offer any instruction. The instructions for some papers need to be more clear. If a class offers supplemental instruction, take advantage of this because it was so helpful even after that class. There is a lot of reading required and you will do well to review assignments and post before... Read More

This program is intense. It will take a lot from you in order to finish. Before you start, take some time for yourself. Create your own study process that will work on a daily basis. Take a vacation, save some money, and create a self-care plan. The program is designed to prepare you for becoming a person that will care for other people in an intense manner. There are courses in ethics, culture and diversity, theories, and socialization. Be prepared. You will have to travel on 2 occasions for what... Read More

This was the first time that I had on-line courses. I am a young 70 years of age and found the program and instructors to be very well versed in their field. I enjoyed the courses and have learned a lot. I am putting on hold the last of my courses only due to school loans are more than I feel comfortable with. I hope to conclude my degree in the near future.

This is my first time attending an educational institution that has been exclusively online. I have enjoyed my experience at Capella thus far and would highly recommend it to students who are seeking an online degree. So far I have not had any negative experiences to speak of; the academic advisors I have had so far have been very helpful and relay valuable sources of information when requested, the professors respond to emails in a timely fashion, and the coursework has not been difficult to follow.... Great Option for Working Professional, Graduated 2019

I started when the tuition was lower than it is now. Touro University Worldwide was the only other inexpensive online program at the time and so the choice was a toss up. WASC accreditation and affordability were the main reasons I chose this program. Like any school, some teachers were good, some were fair and some were pretty bad; overall most were good. My advisor was great! He did a great job selecting teachers that matched my learning style. It is a program only for those who are able to be... Read More

I am currently attending Capella as master's degree student in Marriage and Family Therapy Counseling. This is my first time attending an educational institution as a online learner and I can say it has continuously been a positive and rewarding experience. The professors and academic staff are great! The coursework has it's challenges but that is expected for a higher level degree. I am looking forward to finishing my degree at Capella! :-)

Pros of Capella University= professors are competent in their field and willing to give feedback and support to their students. The admissions and advisors are very helpful and supportive. The online library is extensive. The students give a diverse community in the course rooms. Cons of Capella University= sometimes the course of 10 weeks goes too quickly. If a course as too many students, it is difficult to do group work.

Overall Liberty is an excellent school and you will receive and excellent education. I received both my Bachelor's and Master's there but am not able to continue with my Doctorate with Liberty because they don't have a program available that I could go into without completely changing my career path and area of concentration. I started with Liberty when they were a little smaller and you felt as though you received more attention from your instructors. Now the school is so big and the professors... Read More
