How We Rank "Most Affordable" Schools

%%YEAR%% Most Affordable Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team manually collects and verifies tuition data for every school on our lists, ensuring you see accurate, up-to-date costs whether you're pursuing an associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. To qualify, schools must offer fully online degrees, hold institutional accreditation, and have verifiable enrollment data through the National Center for Education Statistics. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize schools that offer a consistent tuition rate across programs at the same degree level, so you're not caught off guard by unexpected price differences between majors, and for graduate programs we go a step further by individually calculating program costs since credit requirements and fees vary widely.

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • CSU is the first online school on this list to charge the same tuition rate for in-state and out-of-state students. It also includes textbooks among its stated ways to save money.
  • One of the more distinctive details is the inclusion of grant writing as a public health course option. That may sound small, but it points to a real-world skill that public health professionals often need.
  • For students who want a traditional research-heavy MPH, another program may be a better fit. But for cost-conscious working adults who want a broad public health master's with options to personalize courses, CSU offers a highly adaptable option.

Stories Behind the Most Affordable Online Master in Public Health Degrees: An Editorial Analysis

Low Tuition, High Reported Earnings

University of West Florida

UWF has one of the clearest affordability-plus-outcomes stories on the list. Its annual tuition is under $8,300, but its reported median earnings are $145,500+ among MPH graduates. That's the highest earnings figure provided. As a school, UWF also has an 89% retention rate and a large online enrollment of 4,000+, suggesting students are staying enrolled in a mature online environment. This is a very strong fit for students who want an affordable MPH but are especially focused on long-term financial return.

Faculty Access at an Affordable Price

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

TTUHSC stands out for its 7:1 student-faculty ratio, the lowest on the list, along with the highest student review rating overall. Its annual tuition is still relatively low at $8,199 (for in-state students), and the MPH program is housed in a health sciences center, which may appeal to clinicians or healthcare professionals moving into population health. This is perhaps the best fit for those who want affordability but do not want to feel anonymous in a large online program.

Studying Public Health Through a Disparities Lens

Lamar University

Lamar’s public health master's program is framed around chronic health issues that disproportionately affect low socioeconomic populations. Its elective themes reinforce that focus by delving into health literacy, diverse populations, workplace disparities, and U.S. and international health inequities. At ~$7,500 per year (with the same in-state and out-of-state tuition), Lamar is a strong fit for students who want a lower-cost MPH with a clear social determinants of health angle.

FAQs About Affordable Online MPH Programs

How Much Does a Cheap Online MPH Degree Cost?

For the most affordable online MPH degrees above, the cost of annual tuition ranges from ~$4,800 to ~$10,000 for in-state students.

The total cost of an online MPH can vary based on several factors but the most significant is tuition. To get an accurate comparison of tuition fees, students can determine a school's per-credit tuition rate and multiply that by the number of credits required to graduate.

In addition to tuition, prospective students need to add in the cost of books, supplies, and various fees charged by the school, including application and technology fees. Some students may also need to account for special expenses, including childcare, student loan interest, and travel costs associated with any on-campus residencies or workshops that are a required part of the curriculum.

What Financial Aid Is Available for Online MPH Students?

Students who would like to earn a Master of Public Health degree online have a number of options for funding their education. Most students begin the process by filling out and submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The school or schools they're interested in attending will then provide an offer detailing the types of financial aid that are available. The best options are funding types that don't need to be paid back, which include scholarships, fellowships, and grants offered by universities or private organizations. Some online graduate students may also be able to cover a portion of their educational expenses through teaching assistantships or by engaging in other types of work-study programs. Many students will also be eligible for federal or private loans, but these are less desirable due to the interest that must be paid back.

Because there is a growing need for public health professionals, many organizations offer financial aid for students pursuing degrees in this field. Some of the available master's-level scholarships include the following:

There are also fellowships available for MPH students, such as the .

What Courses Are Included in Online MPH Programs?

Public health professionals develop and implement programs designed to promote wellness within their communities and beyond. Master's programs in public health prepare graduates to assume these roles by teaching them the core competencies, foundational knowledge, and analytical skills they need to work both in research and practical environments.

Below are some courses commonly found in an MPH program online or on campus:

  • Principles of Public Health: One of the first courses in a master's of public health program, this class introduces key topics, such as community and environmental health, social and behavioral determinants of health, epidemiology, biostatistics, and health policy and systems. Case studies provide real-world applications of these concepts and show how they are interrelated.
  • Biostatistics: With a heavy emphasis on advanced mathematical concepts, this course examines the use of quantitative methods to help solve public health problems. Students use probability, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and nonparametric tests to analyze research data that pertains to public health.
  • Community Health: One of two companion courses that explore major disciplines within public health, a community health course focuses on the socioeconomic, racial, and cultural determinants of a community's health. Coursework also examines the models and programs used to address common concerns.
  • Environmental Health: The companion to a community health course, an environmental health course informs students about the effects of natural and human-caused conditions on a community's health. Students learn to investigate, analyze, and develop policies and programs considering environmental factors such as air, water, soil, and other physical characteristics that create healthy living environments.
  • Epidemiology: This introductory course provides a general overview of the causes of diseases, disorders, defects, and injuries that may occur in human populations. Students develop critical thinking skills as they analyze public health problems and evaluate possible interventions and treatments.

Is an Online MPH Worth the Cost?

An online MPH can be a worthwhile investment, offering flexibility and accessibility for those looking to advance their careers in public health. The cost-effectiveness of online programs, many of which have low tuition rates, provides a financially viable option compared to traditional on-campus programs. The ability to balance studies with personal and professional commitments makes online MPH degrees a practical choice for many. Not only are there numerous career opportunities for MPH degree holders, many of these occupations are increasing in demand and offer comfortable salaries. Therefore, considering the potential for career advancement and the relatively low cost, an online MPH can be a valuable investment in the long run.

I've had a great experience with this university. The instructors are great and always available for help. The online classes are easy to navigate. I would highly recommend this school to others. I'm very satisfied with the career services offered by the school.
