How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online bachelor's in speech pathology degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few bachelor's in speech pathology qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

Compare the Best Online Speech Language Pathology Programs

As the graph above shows, four-year tuition varies much more dramatically than median earnings among the highest-earning schools in this ranking. Estimated four-year tuition ranges from about $13,400 at UF to $173,300 at Elms, while median earnings among online SLP bachelor's graduates are clustered within a much narrower range of roughly $43,300 to $59,300, and this is just five years after graduation.

UF is notable because it combines the highest median salary on the list above with the lowest estimated tuition among the five schools shown. That cost spread is particularly relevant in speech-language pathology because these bachelor’s programs commonly serve as preparation for graduate study. Those costs can add up.

The graph above points to broadly positive peer endorsement across this ranking. Eight of the nine programs have recommendation rates of at least 80%, while UF and ACU both reach 100%. The wider review data also shows why recommendation rate and review rating are useful together as comparison tools.

NMSU and NAU, for example, both have recommendation rates of 80%, yet their average ratings differ considerably at 2.77 and 3.91 out of 5. Recommendation rate captures whether reviewers would ultimately endorse their school to someone else, while review rating reflects how positively they scored the overall experience. Looking at both helps reveal differences that either measure alone can obscure.

Standout Features of the Best Online SLP Degrees: An Editorial Analysis

More Than One Route Into SLPA Training

College of Our Lady of the Elms

Elms stands apart for the number of entry points it has built around speech-language pathology and SLPA training. Rather than requiring every student to start in the same bachelor’s pathway, the school offers an associate degree, bachelor’s completion program, second bachelor’s option, and certificate, while students who already hold an unrelated bachelor’s can choose a separate 12-month post-baccalaureate program to complete prerequisites for SLP or audiology graduate study.

Keep Fieldwork Local

Maryville University

Maryville's online communication sciences and disorders bachelor’s requires no campus visits, and even its clinical observations are completed virtually. When students move into fieldwork, those experiences are arranged in their own communities.

Choose a Clinical or Nonclinical Track

Columbia College - SC

Columbia College gives students a choice that most programs on this list do not make as explicit: its Speech-Language Pathology bachelor’s separates into clinical and nonclinical tracks. This means that students can align the degree more closely with whether they want assistant-level clinical preparation or a broader academic foundation for later study. The clinical route includes in-person practicum and is positioned as a pathway toward ASHA SLP Assistant certification and potential state licensure.

Expert Guidance About Choosing the Best Online SLP Degree

Headshot of Bethany Lovern (MA, CCC-SLP, CBC)

Speech Language Pathologist

Bethany Lovern, MA, CCC-SLP, CBC, is a speech-language pathologist, with experience across pediatric, school, telehealth, and geriatric settings. She earned her master’s in speech-language pathology from Ball State University and currently provides speech, feeding, and lactation services through her own practice while also working with school-age students through telehealth. Her background includes evaluating and treating speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive disorders, supervising SLPAs and clinical fellows, and overseeing rehabilitation programs.

What should students understand about the difference between undergraduate SLP programs and the graduate education required to become a licensed SLP?

"A lot of people don't realize that finishing your bachelor's in communication sciences and disorders doesn't make you an SLP. It gets you in the door for grad school. I have had SLPA work for me and they do not realize that you are not allowed to do any meetings or evaluations and they do not want to treat students all day long.

The master's program is where the real clinical training happens: supervised placements, hands-on hours, and the coursework that actually prepares you to get certified and licensed. I went through my program at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, all in person, and grad school was a completely different level of hands-on responsibility than undergrad ever was... It is intense work over six semesters, usually two years, year round."

"A lot of people don't realize that finishing your bachelor's in communication sciences and disorders doesn't make you an SLP."

How can students gain meaningful hands-on or observational experience while completing much of their coursework online?

"My program was in person, so I got to run a full caseload on my own in an elementary school placement, work in a nursing home, and see outpatient pediatric clients, and each setting taught me something completely different.

In the nursing home, I learned how to chart the way nurses do, talk to dietitians about diet changes, and work alongside occupational therapists & physical therapist to actually get patients to show up for therapy or work on tasks in their room.

In outpatient pediatrics, I learned how to test kids using different games to keep them engaged, work with families who wanted to sit in on every session and families who barely showed interest, and how to make up a new plan on the spot when a kid flat out refuses to participate.

If most of your coursework is online, go out of your way to line up placements in a few different settings like this instead of just one. That variety is where you actually learn the job. Ask to job shadow or follow the SLP around for a day if you are unsure that you will love that setting. I always love having students come for a day to see if it is a good fit for them."

What mistakes do prospective students commonly make when choosing an SLP or communication sciences and disorders program?

"Honestly, the biggest mistake I've seen isn't about which program someone picks, it's what happens after they don't get into grad school on the first try. Almost everyone in my undergrad class at Ball State wanted to stay there for grad school, and the ones who didn't get in the first time mostly just stopped. They got married, moved on with life, and never went back to finish the master's degree you actually need to become a licensed SLP.

If you want this badly, treat a rejection as a setback to work around, not a sign to give-up.  Most of my friends now work in daycares or aids in schools and have no flexibility of their day or job setting.  I can stay in the same field, need no new training, but completely change from working with geriatric patients in nursing homes to working with children in a school.

... Don't let one rejection from a grad program be the end of the story. So many people I graduated with didn't get in on the first try and just walked away instead of applying again. If this is what you want, keep going."

EXPERT TIP

"Say yes to the placements that make you uncomfortable. My nursing home placement pushed me way outside my comfort zone, eating meals with residents in the dining room and helping manage their diets felt strange at first, and old men with dementia made me very nervous but it taught me skills I still use, like how to work with a whole care team instead of just a client."

FAQs About the Best Online Speech-Language Pathology Programs

What Is an Online Bachelor’s in Speech-Language Pathology?

An online bachelor's in speech pathology, like the ones from the schools listed above, trains students to diagnose and treat communication disorders, covering anatomy, linguistics, and therapy techniques. These programs include clinical practicums, preparing graduates for roles as speech-language pathology assistants or further study. Careers span schools, healthcare, and private practices.

Online speech-language pathology bachelor's programs are designed to provide a solid educational foundation to pursue graduate studies in the field or apply for entry-level speech-language pathologist positions. In some cases, you can begin working as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) in a clinic or similar healthcare setting with simply an associate degree. An online SLP certificate — which typically requires 24 credits and may also include clinical training hours — can also prepare you to work under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist.

A bachelor's in speech pathology is ideal if your goal is to pursue graduate studies in the field to become a speech-language pathologist. However, degrees in areas such as psychology, linguistics, and language development can also be used as the foundation for becoming an SLP. In general, full-time students can complete an online speech therapy degree in four years, usually at their own pace within the program.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Speech Pathologist?

It will probably take you at least eight years to become a speech pathologist. Administrators design bachelor's degrees to last four years and SLP master's programs to last three years with a full-time schedule. You then need to complete a supervised clinical fellowship for about nine months before taking the licensure exam and waiting for your results.

What Are the Admission Requirements for an Online Bachelor’s in Speech-Language Pathology?

Online speech pathology bachelor's programs have certain prerequisites for admission. Applicants will need a high school diploma or GED and, in many cases, high scores from entrance exams, like the ACT or SAT. When submitting their online applications, prospective college students may be asked for high school transcripts, one or more letters of recommendation, a resume of jobs and extracurricular activities, and a personal statement or essay.

Some programs may require students to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA through their first two years of general education before being admitted to speech therapy study at the baccalaureate level. Additionally, because degrees in speech therapy are pre-professional and prepare students for further study, students may need to maintain a 3.0 GPA to graduate.

What Will You Study in an Online Bachelor’s in Speech-Language Pathology?

An online speech pathology undergraduate program covers topics in liberal arts and sciences, as well as those related to speech, language, and hearing. Programs typically require 120 course hours, about 30 of which typically focus on language development, speech and language disorders, anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic procedures. Most programs also require supervised clinical placements, where students observe professional speech pathologists conducting diagnostic and treatment sessions. For online students, these can usually be arranged at facilities nearby.

  • Introduction to Linguistics: The study of linguistics covers topics including what language is, how humans use language, how children learn languages, and more. Students learn about basic linguistic terminology, principles, and subfields, including phonetics, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
  • Introduction to Speech Sound Disorders: This course focuses on identifying, understanding, and treating speech sound disorders. Students learn about phonological processes, differential diagnosis, and language development while gaining exposure to the causes and characteristics of speech sound disorders, as well as methods for diagnosing and treating these disorders.
  • Communication and Language Disorders in Children: Faculty teaching this class expose students to topics surrounding language development and communication in children. Students learn about theories and legislation regarding language development and communication. They also begin to develop practical skills, including how to communicate with parents about possible language development delays, assess a child's language skills, and recommend appropriate intervention methods.
  • Language Development: In order to succeed as an SLP, students need to first gain an understanding of how language skills typically develop. This course is designed to help students understand how children learn to speak, major speech and language milestones, and theories of language development.
  • Multicultural Aspects of Communication Disorders: Cultural and language-specific factors can affect how communication disorders present. In this course, students develop a greater understanding of how a multicultural environment affects speech-language pathology. Students will also learn how foreign dialects, language differences, and cultural diversity can affect language learning.

What Education Is Required to Be a Speech Therapist?

You must have a master's degree in speech-language pathology before you can legally practice as an SLP. In addition, your graduate program must hold accreditation from the Council on Academic Accreditation, and you will probably need a state license or credential.

Is a BA or BS Better for Speech Pathology?

If you choose to major in speech pathology, you can either get an online Bachelor of Arts (BA) or an online Bachelor of Science (BS). Though both SLP programs teach students about communication sciences disorders and give them experience in clinical practice, there are different electives students can take in each. Despite the overlap in core coursework, a science-oriented BS may offer a over a liberal arts-oriented BA if your goal is to pursue graduate studies in speech-language pathology.

What Graduate Options Exist in Speech-Language Pathology?

In addition to online speech pathology programs at the associate and bachelor's levels, there are master's degrees and doctorates in speech-language pathology. You can also earn a certificate in speech-language pathology. However, those interested in becoming licensed SLPs need at least a master's degree in speech language pathology.

SLP master's programs typically include 36 credits of coursework and take around two years of full-time study to complete. Each program also includes a lengthy clinical placement, during which you assist a working SLP at a speech-language treatment facility. You're required to complete a clinical assignment to graduate, and your documentation of these work hours will help you earn a license to practice.

Doctoral degree programs are less common, and most doctoral programs require a master's in SLP to apply.

What Is the Difference Between a Speech Therapist and a Speech Pathologist?

There's technically no such thing as a speech therapist or speech pathologist because the healthcare industry uses the term "speech-language pathologist." However, non-experts use both terms interchangeably, and they all refer to the same occupation.

What Licensure and Certifications Are Available With an Online Bachelor’s in Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-language pathology professionals must be certified or licensed, depending on their . These usually involve earning an advanced degree, completing a specified number of clinical hours, and passing an exam. In , for example, applicants need at least a master's degree in SLP from an accredited institution, 300 supervised clinical practicum hours, 36 additional weeks of full-time professional experience, and they need to pass a state board exam.

While a graduate degree and state licensure are required to work as a speech pathologist, specialized certifications can also benefit professionals with bachelor's degrees. Certification tells potential employers and clients that a practitioner has the professional training and experience to provide quality care. Some certifications also require practitioners to continue their education, ensuring they are up to date on best practices and scientific research in their field.

Below are two certifications you can get with an online bachelor's in speech pathology:

  • : You can become a certified SLPA after getting an online bachelor's, associate degree, or certificate in a related speech therapy area from an accredited institution. Individuals may also apply if they have a minimum of a two-year degree with relevant coursework in communication disorders or language development. They must pay a one-time fee, submit their application materials, and pass the Assistants Certification Exam.
  • : Those who don't meet the C-SLPA criteria can still become certified audiology assistants. Applicants must have either a bachelor's degree, high school diploma, GED, or a military job series certificate in audiology. Practical hour requirements for certification vary based on the applicant's educational qualifications.

After receiving my associates from CUNY City Tech, I transferred to Brooklyn College to receive my bachelors. The school was helpful and provided help as a transfer student to ensure I met all requirements to be admitted into the program for speech language pathology. The only downside, is they limited students in this program to 2 classes per semester. This meant i was a part - time student for two years, and could not receive financial aid. This also dragged out the completion of my degree, but... Read More

I had a wonderful experience at NAU. The degree that I earned has more than prepared me for my future career. I love the fact that NAU provides a great deal of support and instruction for their students. They are very caring and attend to the needs of each individual students. NAU offers a wide variety of majors. They even have a video array of online degree options. NAU also has a low cost of tuition when compared to other public institutions. Overall I thought i enjoyed Brooklyn college, although some professors were difficult, the amount of wonderful professors outweighed the bad. So many inspiring professors that truly make me want to be better and want to see you doing well. The campus during the spring semester makes me feel happy, especially the flowers, you can even have a picnic on the grass which i never got to do but will maybe do during grad school.

During my time at the University of West Georgia, Dr. Sethna was President. I rememeber eating lunch with him during the times that he would host the Lunch with the President event. As a Speech Pathology major, it was exciting to learn how the body works to produce speech sounds as well as learning about the cultural nuances to speech as well. UWG had many organizations that upheld student leadership and ensured that students were engaged in at least one activity. Going there was the best 4 years... Read More

Graduated from University of Colorado Boulder in 2022. Overall, I had a good experience. The campus is genuinely beautiful, with stunning buildings and mountain views, and it always felt very safe walking around at any time of day.
That said, it is definitely a very liberal and socially driven environment, and in my opinion there is often more emphasis on social culture than academics. It’s also extremely expensive, which can be hard to justify depending on your priorities.
On the positive side, there... Read More

The speech and hearing sciences program is very good at keeping you informed on what classes are required in order to graduate. They have a good selection fo classes that are very fun and interesting to take. I also found it easy to get observation hours where you watch a speech pathology session and get it signed off that you observed it. For a masters in this field, you need a certain number of observation hours.

I had advisors who would answer any question I had about the degree I chose and they were more than willing to help me make sure I got the classes I needed in the right order. I also loved how Indiana University would offer fun classes that you probably would never take had it not been offered. Overall, I enjoyed my experiences at Lehman College. The campus is beautiful, well maintained and made up of learned professors. You will find activities throughout the campus such as plays, music concerts, outdoor games, career development workshops, etc. There's room for improvements though. For instance, the the financial aid office have an impossibly long wait time (expect to spend at least 4 hours waiting on a good day) and they could've offered more scholarships. No school is perfect so I would... Read More
