How We Rank "Most Affordable" Schools

%%YEAR%% Most Affordable Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team manually collects and verifies tuition data for every school on our lists, ensuring you see accurate, up-to-date costs whether you're pursuing an associate, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. To qualify, schools must offer fully online degrees, hold institutional accreditation, and have verifiable enrollment data through the National Center for Education Statistics. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize schools that offer a consistent tuition rate across programs at the same degree level, so you're not caught off guard by unexpected price differences between majors, and for graduate programs we go a step further by individually calculating program costs since credit requirements and fees vary widely.

AI Student Review Summary: Reviews of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke are generally favorable, with most describing a close-knit environment. Students repeatedly praise that professors often know them individually and provide meaningful academic support through guidance, writing help, workshops, and exam preparation. Many also value the university’s distinctive cultural setting, especially its connection to Lumbee heritage and its broader diversity, which makes the student body feel inclusive and community-oriented. Online and hybrid options are often seen as convenient and manageable, especially for working adults, though several reviews note that remote communication can make it harder to connect with instructors or advisers.

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • Uniquely, this master's curriculum is built around the overlap between financial services and computer science, with coursework in full-stack development, artificial intelligence for FinTech, and blockchains and smart distributed contracts. It's designed for students who want to work on the systems, platforms, and tools reshaping banking, payments, investing, fraud prevention, and customer-facing financial products.
  • As one of the cheapest master's programs on the list, it is also one of the most technology-forward. Students are learning to design, implement, and test AI systems (e.g., chatbots, biometrics, object recognition, and prediction systems) while also studying advanced algorithms, hardware architectures, and data-driven financial solutions.

AI Student Review Summary: Student reviews describe UCF as a large, opportunity-rich university that often delivers strong value through internships, research, and career services. Several said the school helped them build professional networks, gain real-world experience, and feel prepared for employment. The main frustrations center around very large classes, difficulty getting the courses needed, and a risk of feeling anonymous unless students actively sought help and got involved. Administrative support drew the sharpest criticism, particularly financial aid, advising inconsistency, and slow or confusing communication.

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • This finance master's program has a STEM-certified designation, which is distinctive. UTPB emphasizes that it's one of only a small number of Texas programs of its kind with STEM certification while also being delivered through an AACSB-accredited College of Business.
  • UTPB mixes eight-week and 16-week courses rather than forcing every class into the same accelerated mold.
  • UTPB has strong connections to energy investments, and as such, this finance master's program online offers exposure to finance through the lens of the energy economy.

AI Student Review Summary: Reviews are generally favorable, with strong praise centered on accessibility, flexibility, and value, but the negative feedback is unusually sharp when it appears. Many reviewers describe small classes and a low teacher-to-student ratio that created more personal instruction. Several say supportive professors and advisers made it possible to balance coursework with full-time work, evening study, and family responsibilities, especially in the online format. Affordability is another recurring strength. The main complaints report unprofessional or toxic instructors, unclear communication, unrealistic expectations, delayed grading, and resistance to questions. Others describe advising problems, transfer-credit disputes, slow document processing, scheduling hiccups, limited course availability in some terms.

  • Managerial accounting and finance are topics that sit alongside concentrations such as Native American Enterprise, Environmental Health and Safety Management, Health Informatics, and Project Management.
  • There are many embedded certificate options throughout the finance master's program. For example, students can add certificates in data analytics, operations leadership, healthcare administration leadership, and program management while completing the MBA.

AI Student Review Summary: At Northeastern State University, most describe a supportive, personable experience shaped by small classes and accessible instructors. Many reviewers say professors are responsive, encouraging, and invested in long-term success, not just coursework, and several note strong advising, practical preparation, and meaningful faculty relationships. Flexibility is another recurring strength, with online options and manageable course structures. Affordability is often cited as a benefit, with several reviewers seeing the university as a strong value compared with larger institutions, though that view is not universal. The most pointed criticism centers on cost relative to outcomes for some reviewers, alongside limited scholarship availability.

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • A&M - Victoria incorporates Financial Modeling, Technical Analysis of Financial Markets, Derivatives, Financial Data Analytics, and FinTech into the concentration to help create a more market-oriented and analytically focused finance master's program.
  • Students are not limited to classic finance subjects like financial institutions or investments; they can also move into areas tied to quantitative market analysis, financial technologies, derivatives, and analytics.

AI Student Review Summary: Many reviewers praise the online format at Texas A&M University for letting them complete coursework on their own schedule while still receiving prompt communication from professors, advisers, and support staff. Smaller class sizes and responsive faculty stand out repeatedly, with several reviewers noting one-on-one attention, quick answers to questions, engaging instruction, and advisers who help keep course planning on track. The most common drawbacks center on inconsistent elective availability, and a learning experience that can feel too heavily based on reading and written responses rather than hands-on application. Some reviewers also point to weak scholarship and fellowship support.

Stories Behind the Most Affordable Online Master's in Finance Degrees: An Editorial Analysis

🏆 For Students Who Want Finance Through a Tech Lens

University of Central Florida

UCF’s online FinTech master’s stands apart because it treats finance as a technology ecosystem. The curriculum blends artificial intelligence, full-stack development, blockchain systems, smart contracts, and advanced algorithms into a finance master's degree, making it particularly aligned with where digital banking, fraud detection, automated investing, and financial platforms are heading.

🏆 For Students Who Want Personal Financial Planning Instead of Wall Street Finance

Oklahoma State University

OSU’s finance graduate program approaches finance from a family financial planning perspective. Instead of centering heavily on investment banking or institutional finance, the curriculum emphasizes retirement planning, insurance, estate planning, housing, taxes, and counseling-oriented financial guidance. The CFP Board registration is especially important because it directly supports CFP certification eligibility, giving the degree clear professional alignment.

🏆 Where Finance Education Intersects With the Energy Economy

The University of Texas Permian Basin

UTPB’s finance master’s is one of the few affordable online programs on the list that ties finance education to the energy sector. Because the university sits within a major oil-and-gas economy, the curriculum exposes students to finance through the lens of energy investments and industry-driven capital decisions. That industry orientation makes the program more regionally specific and operationally grounded. The STEM designation also adds a technical distinction.

What Should Students Look for in an Affordable Online Finance Master’s Program?

Headshot of Leonid Mechik (Finance MBA)

Finance and AI Entrepreneur

With an MBA in Finance from Touro University, Mechik combines expertise in finance, AI-driven business systems, SaaS operations, and digital transformation. His background spans capital markets, financial analytics, startup leadership, and technology-enabled contract management, with a particular focus on how artificial intelligence is reshaping financial workflows.

How can an affordable online finance master’s degree help advance your career?

"I completed an entire master's in finance with over 15 modules, including an additional certification as a Financial Market Specialist for the management of investment funds. I really suggest you check out my certifications on LinkedIn and take a few of those courses.

Each course was very focused on its topic and gave me the possibility to have proven expertise in specific areas. It helped all the way, starting with job applications, later with applications for funding from investors, but moreover, I could always go back to the lessons, review them, and apply the knowledge.

The greatest thing is that the lessons are constantly updated, and lifetime access provides a connection both to the professors as well as to the newest materials on the topic."

What are the benefits of earning an online master’s degree in finance?

"In my experience, the best thing about doing a degree online is that you can work in parallel and adjust much more flexibly what you really want to learn, making it a real master's that you can apply later or even already while studying in your real life."

"We have employees who are doing online master's degrees at my startup now, and I am actually giving them assignments that they can do as project work, which is relevant both for their studies and also gives us as a company high-quality results as well as feedback from the professors.

For example, this way we received invaluable feedback on our financial reports that were used for investor presentations during financing rounds, and it also enabled us to create high-quality financial projections and financial modeling."

What skills can increase the value of an online finance degree?

"I think it is the best value that online master's programs provide, that you can literally choose from all kinds of modules and lessons.

So if you're working in the financial industry, you are still not limited to a specific financial field, but you can also go deeper into the medical, construction, or other industries.

I'm still participating in open online courses to get a deeper understanding of the needs of our customers and always suggest that employees take additional lessons on Coursera and edX, and we are financing such participation with subsidies."

Which areas of finance offer the strongest growth potential right now?

"I am the founder of a business-to-business contract management platform, and we have a strong financial dashboard and connection to financial data, including interaction with business intelligence systems. This area of finance is changing significantly at the moment, and I fully believe that the greatest potential lies in areas where experts need to closely interact with artificial intelligence and have deep knowledge in both technology as well as nuanced financial processes.

One expert can take over the job that previously five people could do, but it shouldn't worry you, as the depth and level of satisfaction of such a job is increasingly interesting compared to what I experienced 15 years ago when I started my career in the finance sector, where I needed to do low-value research for hours and pass it on to analysts. This kind of job will not exist anymore.

But the interesting part of working in the finance sector is there to take for newcomers who understand and value new technologies."

EXPERT TIP

"My advice would be not to look at the affordability of the master's program, but at the topics, your life situation, and your professional goals, as well as student ratings. There are quite a few online master's programs available at the moment, and instead of focusing on affordability, I would first ask the platforms and universities if they can offer a scholarship or a special payment plan."

FAQs About Affordable Online Master's Degrees in Finance

How Do Affordable Online Finance Master’s Programs Work?

An online master's in finance degree is a postgraduate program that provides students with advanced training in the financial field. The degree typically requires around 18 to 36 months of full-time study, although accelerated programs may be available at some institutions.

Online programs often offer flexible scheduling options to accommodate working professionals, including fully asynchronous coursework. The online format is especially attractive to working professionals, who appreciate the flexibility of learning at their own pace and on their own schedule. Still, some online programs may require in-person attendance one or several times, and/or an internship in a finance setting. When that’s the case, they connect students with businesses in their area.

Admission requirements for online finance master's programs often include a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Some programs may prefer candidates with a degree in finance, economics, statistics, or related fields. GRE or GMAT scores may be required. Other schools may accept students with diverse academic backgrounds. That said, students without a finance-related bachelor's degree may still find it helpful to take foundational courses before enrolling.

A finance master’s degree program usually includes a mix of core courses and electives. Core courses cover fundamental concepts in finance, such as financial analysis, investment management, risk management, and corporate finance. Students can often tailor their degree to fit their specific interests and goals by selecting a specialization, such as financial planning, corporate finance, investment banking, or risk management.

What Classes Will You Take in an Online Master’s Degree in Finance?

When pursuing an online finance degree at the master’s level, students take courses that help them deepen their knowledge of economics, data, ethics, statistics, and more. Below are a few examples of common courses:

  • Financial Reporting: This course covers topics like financial statement analysis, accounting standards, revenue recognition, and asset valuation. Students in this course gain an understanding of how organizations convey their financial performance to stakeholders.
  • Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management: Students learn about investment strategies and portfolio management in this class. They develop knowledge of different asset classes, risk-return trade-offs, and the methodologies used to construct and rebalance investment portfolios. Coursework includes simulations and case studies to give students real-world experience in evaluating securities, managing risk, and building investment portfolios.
  • Corporate Finance: This course provides an in-depth look at the financial decisions that corporations must make, with a focus on capital budgeting, financing options, and valuation techniques. It also explores the factors and valuation models used by companies to assess potential mergers, acquisitions, and investment projects.

Additionally, students can expect to take classes in macroeconomics, risk management, financial modeling, quantitative methods, and others.

What Financial Aid Options Exist for Cheap Online Finance Master’s Programs?

The costs associated with earning a master’s in finance degree can vary, depending on factors like the chosen institution, program duration, and the student’s personal circumstances. While there are plenty of affordable online finance degrees, some programs may require a significant financial commitment. There are several strategies that can help cover these expenses.

First, it pays to consider multiple options. Some universities offer competitive pricing for online degrees, making them an affordable choice.

Many students balance the costs of their degree by maintaining part-time or full-time employment. By doing so, they earn a steady income stream to cover living expenses and offset tuition costs. With this approach, good time management is essential to a healthy work-study balance.

One way to reduce costs is to explore the use of open educational resources (OERs) and digital libraries as alternatives to traditional textbooks and course materials. Further, opting for a program that offers credit for prior learning or work experience might result in lower overall program costs.

Finally, scholarships, grants, loans, and employer tuition reimbursement programs can provide significant help in financing an education.

When it comes to paying for college, students have a variety of financial aid options available, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. Each type of aid has its own benefits and requirements, and the best option for a given student depends on their specific situation.

  • Scholarships and grants: These forms of financial aid don’t require repayment. Students can qualify based on a variety of factors, including their academic record, financial need, or unique circumstances such as their background or field of study. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to financial aid, and it's worth exploring all of the options available. Schools may offer their own scholarship or grant opportunities or assist students in finding funding outside of financial aid.
  • Employer tuition assistance: Many employers offer tuition reimbursement or assistance programs as a perk of employment. These programs often come with certain requirements. For instance, students may need to maintain a minimum GPA and continue to work for the employer for a specific period after graduation. On the bright side, employer assistance can make it much more affordable to earn a graduate degree.
  • Federal and private loans: Loans are funds that students borrow to cover educational costs and repay with interest. Federal loans offer competitive interest rates and flexible repayment options. Private loans can be a good option for students who don't qualify for federal loans or who need additional funds beyond what's available through federal aid.

After completing their degree, students with loans will typically have a grace period before they must start repayment. It's important to carefully consider the terms and conditions of each loan before taking on debt.

Are Affordable Online Finance Master’s Degrees Worth the Investment? What Is the ROI?

An online master's in finance can lead to many career options in the finance industry. Graduates can find work in investment banks, corporate finance departments, financial analysis firms, risk management companies, and more. Additionally, they can opt to continue their education with postgraduate or certification programs.

Below are some common career options for master's in finance graduates, with the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS):

  • Financial Analysts (median annual salary: $99,890, job growth: 9%): assess market trends and analyze financial data to provide insights for investment decisions.
  • Financial Managers (median annual salary: $156,100, job growth: 17%): oversee an organization's financial strategies and operations.
  • Personal Financial Advisors (median annual salary: $99,580, job growth: 17%): help their clients make sound financial decisions and plan for the future. They provide personalized guidance on topics like investing, saving, and debt management.

For those interested in furthering their education, a PhD in finance or a doctorate-related fields, like a PhD in business, can open up doors to academia, investment research, and consulting. This advanced degree can provide more specialized and advanced career opportunities. For finance professionals looking to boost their career prospects, there are many industry-specific certifications available. For example, the Certified Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and Financial Risk Manager (FRM) are highly sought-after credentials that demonstrate expertise in specific areas of finance.

Is an Affordable Master’s in Finance Better Than an MBA?

Both a master's in finance and an online MBA offer unique advantages and valuable credentials in the business and finance sectors. An MBA provides a broader understanding of business management across various functions. A master's in finance, on the other hand, offers a more specialized focus on finance-related concepts and skills.

If your interests lie in specific areas of finance — think financial analysis, risk management, and investments — then a master's degree in finance could be the best choice for you. But with an MBA, you can gain versatile skills for various management roles across industries.

An MBA in Finance is another option. While there may be an overlap in courses with a master’s in finance, an MBA with this specialization is more likely to lead to leadership positions in the finance industry.

You need to be closer to Wayne to get good jobs sometimes with construction elevator maintenance or even some firms.

Course and work was very much self-directed with minimal interaction with professors. It was up to the individual to dive in and understand the material.
Efforts should be made to make seminars more interactive. Discussion boards should use questions that relate to current events and really encourage discussion, not just a regurgitation of facts learned during that unit. Some of the content also needs to be updated. We were asked to critique an article from 2002!

Horrible experience. The arbitrary GPA cap forces professors to sabotage their own work. They deliberately include exam questions on stuff they never cover or in some cases have nothing to do with the class. Example: I had a question about molecular biology on a investments quiz. You rarely see what you did wrong on exams because they might need to change your score to curve under the cap. So first off, this means you don't get better because you don't know what you did poorly on. Secondly, you can... Read More

The courses of AIU are planned well. No wastage of time on unimportant stuff. I love the case studies and examples that help to solidify the concepts. My program, MBA in Healthcare care Management, is simply great. I have checked so many programs before I joined but the curriculum of AIU was just amazing. They have great online support. Overall I am very happy that I joined this college through Talentedge for my future studies and I also don't have to give up my job.

UMGC is an excellent online school with a very reputable school name, University of Maryland, behind them. Classes are difficult and challenging, however, they are fair. Communicate regularly with your professor and classmates and you will not have problems. The graduate degree I received was discontinued and replaced with the MBA program that is offered. It has prepared me for job interviews and for the next steps in my civilian career. I recommend this school to anyone.

I absolutely love SNHU. I have never had any problems with them. The financial aid office is great with communication and they let you know what they need from you and the advisors are very thorough. I graduate in March 2019, and so far I would recommend this university to anyone.

From the very beginning the Academic Office and the Financial Aid Office, as well as Technical Support, were always available to guide me and answer any questions that I had. The degree program and the courses were designed to prepare me for a new career and were both challenging and interesting.

I am currently enrolled in the MSFE program at West Texas A&M University and plan to graduate in 2019. Thus far, the school and program have been fantastic. They offer the program in person or it can be done completely online. Everyone who has contacted me from the school if I have questions or need guidance has been incredibly friendly and helpful.

I think American University's online MBA is a great program. It is simple to use, the teacher's are excellent(and so are their credentials). It is very flexible and makes it easy for me to learn while working a very travel intensive position. The program is pretty expensive but for the network you build and the quality of the material you learn, it is worth it.

The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland challenged me as a student, leader and as a professional. The University of Maryland provides a plethora of resources for each of it's students. It's a great place to develop your skill set and become a future business leader!

This school has great advisers and supportive with extending financial payment due dates a few weeks. The classes are great, however some material repeat the first few weeks. It is fast pace and I would advise doing one at a time unless you know you'll have time to commit to the reading. Reading the material will help you retain the knowledge and the assignments reinforce many of the core topics. Some of the classes are more challenging than others. Another recommendation is to understand the course... Read More

Great program for working professionals, since it is both part-time and online. The online format for the Finance Masters created by the Georgetown faculty is superior to any other online experience I have ever had. The classes are taught live each week by a professor and professors and TA's are available for office hours.
