How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online master's in physical education degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few master's in physical education qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

  • The curriculum prepares students for the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential and ACSM certifications such as Personal Trainer and Exercise Physiologist.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Jacksonville State as a small, highly personable campus where approachable professors, responsive staff, and a genuinely friendly atmosphere shape the experience. Many reviewers say the close faculty access, practical assignments, and flexible online options helped them balance work, family, and school while still feeling supported. Affordability, walkability, safety, and strong preparation in certain areas also stand out. Criticism centers on inconsistency: some early or online courses felt self-directed, advising quality could vary, and several reviewers wanted stronger career placement, better facilities, faster communication, or more to do in the rural setting.

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • This online master's in physical education centers entirely on adapted physical education, preparing teachers to include students with and without disabilities in the same general physical education settings.
  • Coursework builds toward the Certified Adapted Physical Educator credential, certificate, or endorsement where state rules allow, making the degree a direct pathway into one of the field's scarcest specializations.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray a largely rewarding experience shaped by supportive professors, abundant campus involvement, and a strong sense of school spirit. Many say the university’s size works in their favor, pairing broad resources, research access, internships, and career preparation with pockets of smaller community, especially in honors, cohort-based, or online settings. Columbia’s walkability, athletics, and social energy also stand out. Criticism is more targeted than universal: some reviewers describe uneven advising, weak evening or lower-level courses, cumbersome scheduling, limited funding, and certain programs that felt too broad to justify the cost. Several note that success depends heavily on self-direction and using available resources well.

Many say the distance experience feels surprisingly personal, with quick email responses, strong advising, and classes that mirror on-campus expectations. Affordability, research opportunities, tutoring, and a safe, welcoming campus also stand out. Online Degree:

What Sets This Program Apart:

  • Admission requires an undergraduate degree in health and physical education plus initial teaching certification in the subject, so this online M.Ed. serves certified practitioners advancing in the field.
  • A coaching emphasis runs through the entire curriculum, extending the degree beyond school-based physical education into athletic leadership.
  • Assistantship opportunities are available to online students, pairing hands-on experience with financial support in a delivery format where funded positions are rare.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Georgia State as an urban, opportunity-rich school whose biggest strengths are engaged professors, practical coursework, and direct access to Atlanta internships, jobs, research, and networking. Many describe the diverse student body as a major advantage, especially for those who value independence and a city-based routine over a traditional campus feel. The most common frustrations center on administration: advising, financial aid, registration, and communication are often called disorganized or difficult to navigate. Safety, parking, and the spread-out downtown layout also surface repeatedly. Students often succeed here academically, but many say the experience depends heavily on self-direction and using resources proactively.

Compare the Best Online Physical Education Master's Degrees

A master's in physical education is usually a working teacher's move into department chair, curriculum specialist, or district administration roles, where district salary schedules reward the advanced degree.

Keep in mind that these figures are what physical education master's graduates actually earn, but just five years after graduation. This leaves a lot of room to grow salary over time. Use this data to shortlist the PE master's online that are worth a closer look, then weigh the program features that match your career lane.

Among the four schools reporting median earnings on this page, as shown in the graph above, USF leads at $86,804 while USC, GSU, and LU cluster in the mid-$50,000s, a gap of nearly $32,000. USF's position is the interesting one: it sits at #12 for student reviews yet posts the strongest earnings figure, a reminder that satisfaction and pay outcomes are not the same signal.

Five schools on this list, JSU, USC, ESU, APU, and USF, hold a perfect 100% recommendation rate, meaning every verified reviewer would recommend their school to a prospective student. This measure is school-wide, though, and it compresses a lot of nuance: ratings among those five schools run from 4.5 at JSU down to 3.96 at USF, so universal recommendation can coexist with a mixed review picture.

Reading the summaries, the recurring friction at even well-recommended schools involves advising and administration rather than instruction. Treat the recommendation rate as a first filter, then match each school's program structure to the career lane you want from the degree.

Standout Features of the Best Physical Education Master's Degrees Online: An Editorial Analysis

A Coaching Pedigree No Other Program on This List Can Claim

Ball State University

Ball State's MA in Athletic Coaching Education was the first athletic coaching education program in the country to go online, back in 2002, giving it two decades of refinement that newer adaptations of on-campus degrees cannot match. The claim is backed by a professional network most programs would envy: alumni coach across the Big 10, the Mid-American Conference, and the Missouri Valley Conference, and faculty have coached Olympians and NCAA champions.

The curriculum is built on the NASPE National Standards for Sports Coaches across the eight domains of coaching, and students can complete their internship inside their own coaching position.

Micro-Credentials Built Into the Degree Itself

West Virginia University

WVU's online MS in Physical Education Teacher Education embeds digital badging into coursework, so graduates leave with verifiable micro-credentials they can display on professional platforms like LinkedIn, a feature no other program on this ranking offers.

The curriculum is mapped to the Society for Health and Physical Educators' Advanced Teacher Education Standards, and the coursework pushes past classroom pedagogy into school-wide wellness leadership.

The Longest-Running Distance Degree in the Field

Emporia State University

Emporia State's MS in Health, Physical Education, and Coaching opened as the first fully accredited distance-learning master's degree program of its kind in the United States, and it has been running online since 1996. Nearly 30 years of continuous delivery matters in practical terms: students from all 50 states and several foreign countries have completed the degree, and the format never requires a campus visit, which suits coaches managing season schedules and teachers working far from Kansas.

Career Coach on How to Make Your Online Master’s in Physical Education Work for You

Headshot of Sofiko Saltkhutsishvili

Career Coach

Sofiko Saltkhutsishvili is a career coach. Drawing from years of experience in international outreach and mentorship, she helps professionals position themselves for meaningful career opportunities. Sofiko’s coaching emphasizes practical skill-building, networking, and strategic career moves, guiding individuals to leverage credentials, such as an online master’s, as tools for advancement.

Career coach, Sofiko Saltkhutsishvili, emphasizes that an online master’s in physical education is most powerful when paired with professional experience: "From my observation, completing an online master's usually helps the most when an individual already has an established career in the industry." So, for students already working in the field — whether in schools, coaching, or wellness — the degree often becomes a tool for negotiation. “Many individuals leverage it in negotiations for raises, promotions, or new job interviews, she explains.

But she also cautions that "an online master's might not define success for a professional."  The job market, she notes, is increasingly focused on proven ability. She said, "Today's job market values skill sets over everything else." Increasingly, employers in physical education want evidence that you can deliver results in classrooms, gyms, or athletic programs.

[The] skills and ability to do the job correctly are all that matter, whether the degree has been pursued online or offline.

Saltkhutsishvili advises students who don't have any prior experience in the field to build a portfolio of applied work. This can be achieved through internships or volunteering before graduation. This way, students can back up their academic training with practical proof.

Her takeaway is simple but significant: a master’s credential matters, but it is not the whole story. As she puts it, “Ultimately, the skills and ability to do the job correctly are all that matter, whether the degree has been pursued online or offline. For prospective students, the degree should be seen as a a way to sharpen expertise and gain leverage, but career advancement will always hinge on demonstrating skills in real-world settings.

Finally, those looking to save money on their degree and keep student debt down should consider an affordable online master's in physical education or our list of the most affordable online master's degrees in exercise science.

FAQs About Choosing the Best Online Physical Education Master's Program

Can You Get a Physical Education Master's Degree Online?

Yes, you can get a master's in physical education online. In fact, it's very common for teachers to earn their teaching degree online, as the list of options above indicates. While most teaching programs do require some in-person components necessary for licensure, such as student teaching, online PE master's students can often complete these requirements at a school in their local area.

Why Does Accreditation Matter When Choosing an Online Physical Education Master's Program?

When choosing an online degree, accreditation is one of the most important things to look for. Accreditation is a thorough and ongoing review that signals to schools, students, professionals, and employers that a program meets universal standards of quality.

Going to an accredited school is a requirement for federal student aid, licensure, certification, and to transfer credits or build on their education through a doctorate or post-graduate certificate.

While entire colleges are accredited, there are organizations that grant accreditation to specific programs as well. Students looking to pursue a career as a physical education teacher will need to check licensure requirements for their state. Some states simply require students to complete their degree at an accredited college, while some students choose a program accredited by the (CAEP), formerly known as NCATE and TEAC.

Some programs were previously accredited by SHAPE America, formerly known as NASPE, which is no longer evaluating curriculums. The main accrediting body for physical education programs is now CAEP, but some program pages still have SHAPE or NASPE listed as a programmatic accreditor. These programs will remain accredited through CAEP until their status expires and they must renew accreditation.

Other physical education programmatic accreditors include the (COSMA) and the (CAATE).

How Do You Compare Online Master's in Physical Education Programs?

When looking for an online master’s in physical education program, it is important to consider program and school accreditation, class flexibility, fieldwork or on-site requirements, licensure qualifications, and support and resources available for graduates, such as alumni networks or career services.

The ability to choose a concentration or specific classes that match your career goals, such as a focus on sports management or coaching, can also be an important factor in choosing a college program.

If students are not currently licensed teachers, they should make sure their program will qualify them to be a licensed teacher in their state. Students should also ensure they have a plan for completing any required fieldwork or student teaching, and that it can be done at a convenient location.

Which Type of Physical Education Master's Degree Should You Choose: MA, MS, or MEd?

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in athletics as a teacher or coach should consider a master's degree in physical education, like those listed above. Graduate-level physical education degrees include a Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Master of Education.

A Master of Arts focuses on artistic and social aspects of health and wellness, such as dance theory or community programs, while a Master of Science focuses more on the scientific aspects of health and wellness, such as anatomy and physiology. A Master of Education focuses on providing advanced teaching methods in order to prepare graduate students to become skilled educators.

Some master's programs in health and physical education are teacher preparation programs, which means they lead to licensure for students who aren't teachers yet. Other graduate programs are designed for teachers who are currently licensed to help them build on their current knowledge and experience.

Many current teachers earn their master's in education to help them become better teachers, make them more employable, advance their careers, and earn higher salaries, which a graduate degree can often qualify them for.

Master's degrees in physical education usually take one to two years to complete. This can vary depending on the type of degree you're looking for, however. Teachers with valid teaching certification can often finish their program in less than two years because they don't have to meet the same licensure requirements as new teachers. For those who are new to the profession, master's programs typically take at least two years to complete necessary coursework and internship hours.

What Do Online Physical Education Master's Programs Require for Admission?

Admission requirements will vary depending on the program; some programs require a bachelor’s degree in education, kinesiology, physical education, or a related field such as athletic training, while others simply require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.

Other program requirements may include a minimum GPA, GRE or other test scores, letters of recommendation, or a background in teaching. Most online programs require 30-36 credit hours, which can be completed in around one to two years when enrolled full time.

What Courses Are Often Included in an Online Master’s in PE Program?

The curriculum for a physical education program will vary, of course, depending on the focus. However, it's likely to cover some of the basics, like health and wellness, teaching methods, curriculum development, physical education assessments, social psychology, and some of the controversial health issues.

Programs may include online courses such as Motor Learning, Risk Management in Physical Education and Athletics, Sport Psychology, and Statistics in Education and Health Professions.

Students may be required to complete some type of final research project, and students in teaching programs may be required to complete fieldwork in the classroom.

Which Concentration Should You Choose in a Physical Education Master's Program?

While most physical education programs prepare students to be PE teachers in the K-12 school system, there are a few concentrations for people to pursue particular interests.

Choosing a specialization can uniquely prepare students for a career in their chosen field, and can differentiate them from other job candidates by their credentials and experience.

  • Adapted physical education: Teachers trained in adapted physical education specialize in inclusive curriculums and coaching methods for students with disabilities. Programs will cover physical education and activities for students with disabilities, design and implementation of effective curriculums, and may include courses on development of motor skills or legal issues in special education.
  • Sport coaching: Coaching programs equip students with the skills necessary to meet the needs of school, community, and club sport teams. Coaches can work with professional teams or individual athletes, and may focus on specific sports such as football or basketball. Programs may cover coaching techniques, sport psychology, motor development, and creating healthy competitive environments.
  • Sport management or sports administration: Sport management master's programs are geared towards students interested in the business side of athletics. These programs prepare students for a wide range of positions in the sport industry. Graduates may pursue careers in sales, marketing, event management, or athletic administration, for example, and may work for college or professional sport teams.
  • Curriculum development: Programs with an emphasis on leadership and the use of research to enhance teaching methods will prepare students to create effective physical education programs. While most physical education degree programs include courses on curriculum development, some programs focus on how to conduct, interpret, and implement research to improve student learning.

What Careers Can an Online Master's in Physical Education Lead To?

With a master’s degree in physical education, a teaching career is the most common end goal. Teachers can be employed in a K-12 grade setting, after acquiring a public school teaching certificate, or at a college, university, or community center teaching health and physical fitness.

Here are some career options for physical education majors:

What Licensure Do You Need to Teach Physical Education?

The requirements for teaching vary depending on the state, but all states require teachers to be licensed to work in public schools. This means all potential physical education teachers who want to work in a public school will need to earn a teaching degree or credential of some kind. Private schools will also usually require licensure, although that can vary depending on the school.

Is an Online Master's Degree in Physical Education Right for You?

The is heavily school-based: 64% of the roughly 298,800 coaches and scouts work in educational services. Many PE teachers coach on top of a teaching salary, so the coaching market shapes how much a master's credential is worth beyond the classroom paycheck.

shows the master's degree is now the profession's norm: 51% of public school teachers held one as their highest degree in 2020-21, up from 48% in 2011-12, while the average base salary for full-time teachers stood at $61,600. A master's in physical education keeps you competitive in a teaching force where the advanced degree is the majority position rather than the exception.

There's some evidence showing that an online master's in PE benefits the students. According to a , physical education teachers with master's or doctoral degrees showed significantly greater professional efficacy when teaching remotely. So, graduate coursework in pedagogy, assessment, and technology integration appears to translate directly into stronger remote teaching, so the online format of these programs is preparation for the skill set itself. In other words, advanced-degree teachers are more than three times as likely to score above the median for remote-teaching effectiveness. In today's day and age, that's a huge benefit.

A also found that high school students credited their PE teachers with controlling how much they enjoyed physical education class, which in turn shaped whether they expected to stay active later in life. Researchers ran semi-structured focus group interviews with 25 students at a US high school. The finding underlines why graduate training in teaching methods and student motivation, core content in most of these master's programs, matters.

I just started my secondary clinical rotation and was nervous going in, thinking I had no idea what I was doing. After teaching a few classes, my cooperating teacher was very impressed and I know that I have the great faculty at NIU to thank for that!

She made sure that I had everything I needed and had me prepared for the first day of school. The teachers were also very helpful and had a passion for what they were teaching.
