How We Rank "Best" Schools
The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online master's in substance abuse counseling degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.
We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few master's in substance abuse counseling qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

Student Review Summary: Reviews are overwhelmingly favorable, with students repeatedly praising the caliber of instruction, the responsiveness of professors, and a level of personal support that feels unusually hands-on for an online school. Several describe a learning environment that adapts to different learning styles, encourages critical engagement with research, and builds confidence for real clinical work through practitioner-led teaching. The school’s small size and caring staff also stand out. The one serious criticism is consequential: a strongly negative review warns that accreditation and licensure preparation may fall short for some career paths, making state-by-state licensing fit an essential issue for applicants to verify before enrolling.

What Sets This Program Apart:
- The online Addiction Psychology MS at Arizona State combines mostly online coursework with a required in-person addiction treatment practicum at a local site.
- ASU holds NAADAC Approved Education Provider status, an external recognition tied specifically to addiction and co-occurring disorders education.
- The degree is positioned around prep for licensure while noting state-specific limitations.
Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Arizona State University Online as a school with real upside for motivated, self-directed learners, but one whose quality can vary sharply. Many praise the flexible format, responsive professors, user-friendly portal, and the ability to balance coursework with full-time work, parenting, or military service. Several also say the name recognition, advising, and career resources helped them move forward. The strongest criticisms focus on high cost, uneven instruction, slow grading, and limited interaction in some online classes. A recurring caution is to research career outcomes carefully, because several graduates felt their coursework was solid but their path to employment, licensure, or specialization was less clear than expected.

What Sets This Program Apart:
- The online master's in addiction studies at VCU is built around the International Program in Addiction Studies, a collaboration with King's College London and the University of Adelaide that no other U.S. substance use master's on this list replicates.
- Students in this addiction studies master's gain exposure to comparative global approaches in prevention, treatment, research, and policy, not only U.S.-based clinical practice.
- The program prepares graduates for local, national, and international policy roles and for leadership positions.
Student Review Summary: Reviews portray VCU as a city-centered campus where diversity, cultural energy, and Richmond itself shape the experience as much as the classroom. Many describe caring professors, helpful advisors, and strong hands-on learning through internships, research, clinical work, and industry connections that translated into jobs and confidence after graduation. Students also value affordability relative to peer schools, flexible scheduling, and an atmosphere that feels welcoming despite the university’s size. Criticism clusters around cost, uneven teaching quality, overcrowding, weak administration, and safety concerns tied to the urban setting. A smaller group also felt some online and advanced offerings were disorganized, repetitive, or under-resourced.

What Sets This Program Apart:
- The addictions counseling master's program online requires both a practicum and an 880-hour supervised internship.
- The MPS is housed within a major research university's continuing and professional studies college, connecting addiction counseling students to UMN's broader behavioral health faculty and resources.
- The program provides clear guidance on Minnesota LADC preparation and states state-by-state licensure limitations.
Student Review Summary: Reviews portray the University of Minnesota as a place with exceptional breadth: abundant courses, research, clubs, internships, and access to the Twin Cities routinely translate into career momentum, networking, and a sense that motivated people can build their own path. Many describe strong professors, rigorous academics, and upper-level classes or smaller departments that feel surprisingly personal inside a huge institution. The tradeoff is scale. Introductory lectures can be impersonal, advising and career support are inconsistent, and several reviewers felt they had to self-advocate to avoid getting lost. Cost, bureaucracy, limited financial aid, and uneven teaching quality appear as the most persistent complaints.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Washburn University as a place where smaller classes shape the experience in meaningful ways. Many say professors are accessible, know them personally, and create rigorous but supportive classrooms that build confidence, practical skills, and career readiness. Many praise responsive professors, affordable tuition, accelerated eight-week terms, and strong accommodations for veterans and working adults, saying the format helped them finish quickly while balancing jobs and family. Others describe a frustratingly self-directed model with limited teaching, canned feedback, and inconsistent grading. Student Review Summary: Reviews describe a school that earns strong praise for attentive professors, flexible online formats, small classes, and a distinctly Christian framework that many found meaningful rather than superficial. Several say the accelerated pace, frequent writing, and heavy reading created a rigorous experience that still worked for full-time workers and families, especially with responsive advisors and faculty support. The sharpest criticism centers on administration, not instruction: repeated complaints cite delayed or confusing financial aid, unclear billing, weak communication, transfer-credit problems, and difficult withdrawal processes. Compare the Best Online Substance Abuse Counseling Master's Degrees
Recommendation rates here measure the schools hosting these substance abuse counseling master's programs, and three of them earn unanimous student approval: ASU, VCU, and WU. A high rate can compress a range of experiences, though. GovState holds an 86% recommendation rate while carrying the second-highest review rating on the list at 4.45, and LU posts 80% with a 3.87 rating, so a lower figure does not always signal a weaker experience overall.
For prospective students, this rate works best as a filter before you dig into what reviewers actually praise or criticize at each school. For details, read the student reviews in full below or click on the schools above for more information.
Standout Features of the Best Substance Abuse Counseling Master's Degrees Online: An Editorial Analysis
The Longest Supervised Internship on the List
University of Minnesota
UMN's Master of Professional Studies in Addictions Counseling requires a practicum plus an 880-hour supervised internship, a clinical training load no other ranked program approaches. Compare the field: Hazelden Betty Ford asks for 700 hours and Purdue Global requires 700 in Indiana for state licensure, so UMN sits 180 hours above the highest count elsewhere on this page.
A NASAC-Accredited Concentration Inside a Psychology MS
Purdue Global
Purdue Global's addictions concentration sits within an online MS in Psychology, giving students a behavioral science foundation that counseling-only degrees do not provide. The concentration carries NASAC accreditation, and Purdue Global is also a NAADAC Approved Education Provider.
The Only Social Work Path to Substance Use Practice
Campbellsville University
Campbellsville's MSW with a Clinical/Substance Use Disorder focus is the lone MSW on this page, where every other program runs through counseling or psychology departments. That route matters because clinical social work licensure opens practice settings, from hospitals to community agencies, that counseling credentials reach less directly. The MSW framework trains students in biopsychosocial assessment and case coordination across systems of care, disciplines adjacent to counseling-only curricula.

What Courses Are Included in a Substance Abuse Counseling Master’s Program Online?
Substance use counseling master's degrees usually have similar curricula. Classes cover basic knowledge and skills needed in the addiction counseling field while leaving space for advanced topics in research and leadership.
We've given some examples of common courses below. If your program has a concentration, you'll typically take two or three electives in that focus area.
- Addiction and Public Policy: Students learn the history and current landscape of government responses to substance use problems. Topics may cover federal versus state and local law, incarceration policies, and targeted interventions for rural and urban populations.
- Clinical Supervision: This course seeks to teach leadership skills used to manage a team of counselors. Faculty may discuss the theory of clinical supervision, HR law, record keeping, and behavioral motivation.
- Ethics in Addictions Counseling: This class examines ethical theories and how they've been embedded in counseling practice. Common topics include privacy, duty of care, involuntary commitment, and concerns about online counseling.
- Maintenance and Relapse: Enrollees study different models of sobriety maintenance and relapse prevention in this course. Professors often cover sociocultural triggers, behavior modification techniques, public health, and risk-informed decision-making.
Which Specialization Should You Choose in a Substance Abuse Counseling Master's?
It's fairly common to specialize your practice within the substance use counseling field. For example, you might work with certain populations, such as adolescents or older adults. You might also come to specialize in treating addiction to certain substances, such as opioids or alcohol. Many bachelor's degrees in substance abuse counseling don't leave room for specialization, so you might use your master's degree as an opportunity to focus on a specialty.
Still, you may be intrigued by counseling but unsure about treating substance use exclusively. You might find one of the following counseling specializations more appealing.
- Child and Adolescent Counseling: Young people requiring counseling need people who are trained in the mental development of children and adolescents. These counselors work to establish trust with their young clients and understand their home, social, and school environments.
- Clinical Mental Health Counseling: These counselors assess and treat individuals of all ages for mental health concerns that include anxiety, depression, and grief. All states require mental health counselors to hold an active license. This takes at least a bachelor's degree in counseling to earn, and some states require a master's in counseling.
- Marriage and Family Counseling: This form of counseling treats the concerns of married couples, long-term partners, and families living in the same households. A master's degree in marriage and family therapy is necessary to become a licensed marriage and family therapist who can perform this kind of counseling.
- Rehabilitation Counseling: Rehabilitation counselors work with clients adjusting to life-changing illnesses or injuries. They need a master's degree to practice, along with a license in some states.
- School Counseling: School counselors help students at K-12 schools with learning, behavioral, and mental health issues. These counselors must hold a master's degree in school counseling to earn state licensure.
Which Careers Can You Pursue With a Master's in Substance Abuse Counseling?
Further Education: An accredited master's degree is enough qualification for most substance use counseling jobs. But some roles might call for an even more advanced or specialized credential. Keep reading to learn about professional certificates and doctorates in this field.
- Graduate Certificate: Certificate programs are short training opportunities for licensed counselors who want an extra credential in a focused area of practice. For example, a substance use counselor may earn a certificate in crisis counseling or lifespan mental development to fill out their clinical toolkit.
- Doctoral Degree: A doctorate in substance abuse counseling is generally only needed if you want to teach at the college level and conduct original research. Most doctorates take an average of seven-and-a-half years to complete because of the large amount of research needed to write a dissertation.
Substance Use Counseling Careers: Most master's graduates in substance abuse counseling go on to become substance use counselors. After all, this is an advanced degree in a relatively narrow specialty. Substance use counselors typically need a state license to practice because of the responsibility they have to care for vulnerable people. Beyond basic licensure, you might study for a certification in substance abuse counseling, which may make you more competitive in the job market.
You might also use your clinical and research skills to fill non-counseling roles in management, policy, and healthcare. For example, you may be a good fit for a career as a health education specialist, a social or community service manager, or a health services manager.

Student Reviews of Online Substance Abuse Counseling Programs
I got both my Bachelor's and Master's in Addiction Psychology from Aspen University. Overall, my experience was good with most professors being knowledgeable and kind. Furthermore, Aspen charges substantially less than other colleges allowing a student to get a degree, even a Master's, and not be drowning in debt. My issue with the program was the final proctored exam for my Master's. All other proctored exams were either done at a local college or during Covid they were online with a Word document,... This was absolutely an incredible experience. I was challenged by professors who are experts in the flied and procured employment in the middle of my Internship. This program is legitimate and teaches everything you need to know in a clinical setting for substance use. It has set me up for full licensure (LAC) in the state of Colorado. I've been a therapist for one month and am grateful to GCU for giving me this opportunity. You can't go wrong getting this degree!

The teachers are really nice, and easy to communicate with, and the curriculum was easy to understand. I am in my 7th semester at Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School. I absolutely love this school! Everyone from the professors to admissions to recruiters are amazing, helpful, and kind. I find myself bragging about my school often because I feel to blessed to be part of such an incredible program. My co-workers joke that I am a recruiter because I cannot say enough about the incredible experience I have had. This is decision you will not regret!

This school is different from others in that you are taught to challenge literature and interpret it in your own way. The knowledge and experience of the professors is unbelievably vast. The professors empathy and willingness to work with you has given me a a desire to learn. I have not graduated yet but am grateful for every semester at this school. I am in my third full-time semester of Hazelden Betty Ford's Integrated Recovery for Co-Occurring Disorders program and I have very impressed, both the with the quality of education provided by instructors and in the interaction I have had with peers. As a former alcohol and drug counselor pursuing mental health licensure, I have been delighted by the integration of course material on both mental health and substance use disorders and their treatment. I would recommend this program to others.

All the awful reviews are true. anyone interested in class action suit? 95.00 per class to rent an ebook (whether you need it or not. Disgruntled field coordinators...Emphasis on papers rather than knowledge. Practicum sites are not interested in GCU students. Obtaining practicum site is tedious and is basically brushed off by the school. Pick another school where one get his/her money's worth

I am currently enrolled in the Integrated Recovery for Co-Occurring Disorders program at Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. I am more than satisfied with the quality of the education and instruction of the staff. As a student with no prior experience as a counselor, this program has provided me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to work with a broad range of populations. From the application process, to enrollment and throughout each course, HBFGSAS has provided exemplary... Read More

The faculty is absolutely amazing. They offer personal insight and professionalism in everything they do in the classroom. Student base is varied and this also gives an added perspective to learning. Student advisor and financial staff are second to none. I have been offered two positions based on my academics and school reputation. This absolutely is the best place to further ones education.

I absolutely love this school. Since being accepted into this school; and gaining an Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees I am looking forward to my Graduates Degree in Business. This is a Christian school, which means a great deal to me. The curriculum is integrated with biblical principles which aids in my ministry as a preacher. It is an honor to say that I am a Ohio Christian University graduate.

This is an excellent program for those that already have the classroom experience. You can pace yourself, the feedback is great, and they respond quickly to inquiries. Aspen also accepts transfer credits from more than 10 years ago which no other online program or brick and mortar school will. This is especially helpful for those of us that had to leave school and can't afford to start again from scratch. The busy person will love it because the work is there for you when you have time for it. The... Read More

Overall, my experience at GCU was very positive. Being enrolled in a Master's level program online requires that you self-regulate and self-motivate. This worked perfectly with my work schedule and I am so happy I chose GCU. The professors are knowledgeable and the counselors they provide you truly ensure you know what you're doing and want to help you stay on track. I always felt comfortable speaking with my counselor over the phone and he helped me to become comfortable with the online format and... Read More

The college is a good one and its on-line program in addictions counseling is impeccable. But financial assistance and awarding of such needs to be instituted. As most know most graduate programs have no financial aid awarded so I had to finance my own education and now I'm paying for it,,, literally. So I recommend that graduate programs pioneer new financial endeavors by instituting non-loan but scholarship based funding.

Liberty Online is a great way to obtain a graduate degree. The professors are always available when you need help. They really want you to succeed! I'm currently working toward a masters degree in Addiction Counseling and I'm learning so much from the professors and other students too. Also, some of the courses provide the textbooks online for you, right from your blackboard, and this really helps with the cost of books.

UCO is a top choice pick for anyone searching for an associate's or bachelor's degree at an affordable price. The campus is situated in the middle of a bustling, growing suburb, yet is quiet and picturesque. The national award winning programs are abundant and eclectic and it would difficult not to find a major that would fit anyone's needs. I would recommend to all my friends and family interested in pursuing an advanced degree.

My college is located at Edmond Oklahoma, its one of the best schools in Oklahoma, I believe it is the best in substance abuse studies, it has some great lectures who pay attention to student when after they need their help. The environment is conducive for learning, and their library has enough books for research and for project, and thesis writing.
