How We Rank "Best" Schools
The OnlineU research team verifies that only institutionally accredited schools offering at least one fully online bachelor's in social sciences degree make the cut. On top of that, schools must also have at least five verified student reviews and an aggregate rating of 2.5+ on a five-point scale. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.
We prioritize the most relevant student feedback by starting with reviews tied to the exact program and degree level. If too few bachelor's in social sciences qualify, we gradually expand the review pool to include related programs or other degree levels, while preserving the most program-specific results at the top of the list. This process continues until all eligible review data has been considered.

Student Review Summary: Reviews describe a university that offers exceptional academic depth, abundant resources, and standout professors, especially once students find the right niche. Many praise research access, mentorship, flexible course options, and the way smaller cohorts or upper-level classes create real community inside a very large institution. The biggest drawbacks center on scale: huge introductory lectures, competitive access to classes or majors, inconsistent advising, and a sense of anonymity if you do not actively seek support. Career outcomes are uneven. Some graduates credit the school with internships, promotions, and strong preparation, while others say job placement, practical guidance, and postgraduation support fall short.

Many say the experience helped them grow socially and professionally, especially if they used office hours, advising, and career resources early. Student Review Summary: Reviews portray a school that works best for highly self-directed adults who need flexibility, especially those balancing full-time work, military obligations, or family demands. Many describe rigorous eight-week terms packed with writing, discussion posts, research, and group projects, saying the value depends heavily on personal discipline and the particular instructor. The sharpest complaints target advising, billing, financial aid, transfer credit evaluations, and administrative communication, which some say create more stress than coursework itself.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Arizona State University Online lean positive, with many praising the flexibility that lets them balance coursework with full-time jobs, parenting, military service, or frequent moves. Strong professors, responsive support teams, and a user-friendly platform often make the experience feel more substantial than a typical online program. At the same time, criticism is consistent around cost, uneven advising, and online courses that can feel impersonal or overly reliant on prerecorded materials. Several reviewers warn that some paths offer weak career payoff without careful planning, and accelerated terms, while efficient, can compress difficult material so tightly that support and clarity become essential.

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray NYU as a place where the payoff is strongest for driven, independent people who know how to chase opportunity. Students repeatedly praise accomplished professors, rigorous academics, strong advising in some departments, and unusually rich access to internships, research, clinical placements, and industry networks through New York City. Many say the experience sharpened their confidence, ambition, and career readiness. The clearest drawback is cost: tuition, housing, and limited aid dominate complaints, often raising doubts about return on investment. Student Review Summary: Reviews of Purdue Global are sharply divided, but the dominant thread in negative feedback is administrative breakdown, especially around financial aid, billing, enrollment, and advising. Many reviewers describe contradictory answers, delayed disbursements, surprise balances, transcript mishandling, and a sense that policies are enforced without clarity or compassion. Positive reviewers tend to separate the classroom from the back office, praising supportive professors, flexible scheduling, and a format that fits work and family life. A recurring tension is whether that rigor translates into career value, transferability, and a worthwhile return on cost.

Compare the Best Online Social Science Bachelor's Degrees
Median earnings across the best online social science degrees span from $57,763 at SNHU to $75,496 at NYU. These are earnings for a bachelor's that opens several career doors that pay differently. The chart shows each program's median, but it cannot show which career a given graduate chose.
NYU's graduates earn the most, while TESU's lower-cost social science degree returns a stronger balance of pay against total tuition. UW sits between them, and the spread between the highest and lowest earners is pretty wide. For a prospective social science student, the takeaway is to weigh the career you intend to pursue against the cost of the degree.
Recommendation rates on this list run from 100% at WSU, CSUSB, KSU, and NYU down to 77% at UNLV, and this metric compresses a lot of different student experiences. NYU holds a unanimous recommendation rate with a 3.69 review rating, the eighth-strongest on the list, while UMGC earns a 4.03 rating but only 67% of reviewers would recommend the school.
A reviewer can rate parts of the experience modestly and still recommend the school overall. Use both figures together when comparing social science programs online, and read the underlying reviews before deciding which school fits you.

Expert Guidance About Choosing the Best Social Science Degree Online
Executive Coach and Leadership Development Consultant
"I just recently completed my PhD in leadership communication. I chose this degree in the social science field because of the demand for understanding employees and culture in the corporate landscape.
I would recommend to students exploring social sciences to find a pain point in today's world that is being researched and examined by an area of social science and see if that is of interest to them.
The social sciences sit in the place between the heavier sciences you mentioned and real life happening in our lives and workplaces. Fields like sociology look at patterns across people groups, while other areas look more closely at individual impact and influence.
With the age of AI, we still need research people investing time into how people behave, work, think and interact with each other."

Student Reviews of Online Social Sciences Programs
In working a full-time position in a non-profit organization, I was able to complete my studies without any feelings of being overwhelmed. Yes the assignments were a challange looking at the syllabus, but once you have devised your study pattern that worked for you, I found it was managable. I think you as a student need to have the determination to take on the task of continuing your education. Yes the tuition fees are higher than some other tuitions you as a person need to be able to make that... Read More

Chico state online program is amazing. I enjoyed my selection of classes. The pace felt the same as if I were to be in person. My professors still provided the option to join their zoom courses. They still made sure to provide the zoom lecture in case you decide not go. Overall my experience at Chico was great and I recommend it to everyone who is looking for in person or online.

When the name changed, from ashford university to university of arizona global campus, I thought it was kind of weird, but I still kept pushing for my degree. Then in Feb of 2022, I seen a news article, ASHFORD UNIVERSITY and navient (their loan provider) where both sues for misrepresentation, and lying about the cost of.classes and how much financial aid we was getting, Go figure. This school, no matter the name change will always be known as the school that scammed their students, and any degree... Read More

Due to obligations arising from military service, post military career, and life in general, I have attended 7 different institutions in the pursuit of my BS. I can honestly say that at excelsior you will have to put in the work as it’s no cake walk. They definitely make up for not having physical class by having you do more work. That aside, I can honestly say this is the first and only institution that I have attended where I can say I have learned things and taken away skills. Each institution... Read More

The experience I had with Purdue Global is worth sharing. The Professors treat students like family members, they are ready to help every student at every step. The reading materials are easy to read. The library is my "friend" and very easy to navigate.

WSU is a great option for people who do not have the ability to be in person for their degree. I appreciated the fact that the classes were still very involved and that participating was part of the grades. I also appreciated the options they provided for degrees as not all schools have these available,

Great school, especially for veterans. I would recommend to anyone. This place is perfect for adults looking to finish their degree. They give the maximum when it comes to transfer credits. If you have gone to a couple of different colleges this is the school for you.

I loved my university - however, it used to be Ashford University - so while I did enjoy my educational experience there, the actual old university (Ashford) was predatory and is now the University of Arizona Global Campus. I have since received updates and see that the U of A Global Campus has a lot of alumni opportunities, though which I very much appreciate.

I completed my degree using the GI Bill and didnt have any issues. I managed my time and got every thing submitted. If youre a procrastinator then online school isnt for you. I would get my masters there but they dont have the degree I want. Some professors are better then others, as in all schools.

I loved everything about Ashford University! I was really nervous to be going back to school after taking an eighteen-year hiatus to raise my daughter. I was also working part-time and didn't know if I'd be able to manage it all. As it turns out, I excelled! I ended up graduating Summa Cum Laude in English and in Cultural Anthropology. I finished two bachelor's degrees in just four years! The teachers were great. The classwork was challenging. I loved the flexibility of the online format. I was a... Read More

UMA has a large number of degree options available. They also have a wide variety of class availability methods such as live class, online classes, and video conferencing. The instructors are very competent, though in my degree, there are a few instructors who teach a large number of classes iyour style doesn't mesh with theirs you are pretty much stuck.

First off, I am a National Guard veteran. When I spoke with an advisor, they took this into consideration and were very excited to tell me about their veteran discounts and what they have to offer. I have taken 6 courses so far and I have noticed a lot of my classmates are also veterans or currently in the military. I started with Ashford in the beginning of summer 2014. So far my cons I have with the school are: 1. They first told me I had all the paperwork, and then they told me there was missing... Read More

Overall the teachers were nice and accommodating and the online platform was easy to understand and navigate making for a seamless online learning experience. I'm not sure how other online learning educations function but for me the interactions felt disconnected and I thought the school could think of more clever ways to keep students engaged while still learning.

This is my second class with WEST. So far, so good. The tuition is pretty reasonable at 250 a credit. That is half of what UOP charges. I like the fact that we are only required to post one day a week. I enjoy the video lectures and I enjoy the 3 live sessions we have during the course of the 8 weeks. Also I am glad there aren't ang text books to pay for. They give you the ebook for free. I just hope my credits will transfer when I go for a masters program. The school is regionally accredited

Because of my work schedule the Distance Learning / Self-paced program was a great fit for me. Instructors ranged from incredible to disengaged which has been my experience with virtually every work group I've encountered in my life so there is no surprise there. I never had difficulty reaching anyone at the college either by phone or email. The courses were generally challenging. The support staff was extremely helpful. I would recommend the school in a heartbeat. I can't speak to financial issues... Read More

After taking a 2 year break from a private school in Ohio, I decided I needed to return to school to finish my degree. I transferred to UMUC and had the best experience I couldve imagined. From the application, to registering, all the way through graduation I had great interactions with all of the professors, staff, admin, and other students. Taking the online courses gave me the courage to be the student I wanted to be and speak and sound the way I want to be heard. You will see throughout these... Read More

Brandman University provided me with the tools and knowledge that I need for my future endeavors in the social services field. The classes were available online and allowed me to complete my work within my schedule. I am a former student of Ashford University and I am so happy that I chose this school to get a degree from. I am 56 years old and when I set out to obtain a degree it was my goal to graduate by the age of 55 and I did it. I worked full-time, had two back surgeries and five deaths in my family and I still graduated with honors. This school is for those people that are self-disciplined and dedicated to working hard in order to achieve their goals. If you do not have these characteristics you may want... Read More

Utah State University was a great school and their online program for a degree in Family Life Studies was educational and convenient. It was nice to be able to take all the necessary classes online since I was not near the campus and couldn't uproot my family to continue my education. The professors at USU were great to work with and were very quick to respond to any questions or concerns I had. Also the advisors were very educated and there to help make sure you had the information you needed.
