How We Rank "Best" Schools

%%YEAR%% Best Online %%LEVEL_NAME%% in %%PROGRAM_NAME%% Badge

For the featured state, the OnlineU research team ranks institutionally accredited colleges and universities in each featured state using Salary Score, our proprietary measure of how graduates' earnings compare with those of students who earned the same degrees elsewhere. Using U.S. Department of Education earnings data, we compare each college's graduates with graduates of the same degrees nationwide, providing a degree-level perspective of financial outcomes rather than relying on institution-wide earnings.

When there isn't enough data to calculate a reliable Salary Score, we rank eligible schools by online enrollment, highlighting colleges with larger, more established distance-learning communities. While some of our rankings include partner schools, every school is evaluated using the exact same criteria.

Student Review Summary: Reviews describe NYU as a high-opportunity, high-cost experience that rewards self-starters. Students frequently praise strong professors, rigorous academics, small cohorts in some areas, and access to internships, research, clinical placements, and alumni networks tied to New York City. Many say the city itself becomes part of the education, expanding cultural awareness and career options. The most consistent complaint is cost: steep tuition, weak financial aid, expensive housing, and long-term debt often make students question the return on investment. Upstate Medical University (), also known as SUNY Upstate, offers three online degree options. The first is an RN to BSN program designed to help registered nurses get a bachelor’s degree. The second is a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Medical Imaging Science for applicants who hold certification in that field. Finally, the Doctor of Nursing Practice is a professional doctorate for advanced nurses. All three degrees have online coursework but feature in-person clinical requirements.

Why we like them: Students can rest assured that UMU focuses exclusively on healthcare education. The university owns several healthcare facilities in the Syracuse area where online students might fulfill their clinical practice requirements. There are also many opportunities to help faculty with biomedical research projects, though they may also need to live relatively close to campus.

Overall great school and supportive faculty. Highly recommended!

Student Review Summary: Reviews portray Upstate Medical University as a solid value with generally positive experiences, driven largely by strong faculty engagement, rigorous coursework, and career preparation. Many reviewers highlight professors as accessible, responsive, and genuinely invested in helping you succeed, while small classes and organized instruction strengthen learning. Affordability is a recurring advantage, especially tied to tuition value and strong exam or clinical readiness outcomes. Criticism centers on uneven administration, weak clinical assignment support, and the sense that low cost can come with tradeoffs. Some also mention high living or insurance costs, average institutional prestige, and the challenge of long Central New York winters.

Molloy University () has a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees available online. The only two bachelor’s degree choices are in health service leadership or interdisciplinary studies, in which students can design a program of study using two specializations. There are more master’s degree options, including programs in business administration, criminal justice, educational technology, and several nursing disciplines.

Why we like them: Molloy maintains an admirably low student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1. This means that instructors have more time to dedicate to helping individual students with questions and concerns. In addition, nearly all undergraduate students receive some financial aid from the college in addition to whatever they can secure from government sources. Scholarships and grants can be very helpful in improving a student’s financial future by lowering their total debt.

D’Youville University () has a few online degree programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. There’s only one bachelor’s-level option, a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. DU also offers an online master’s degree in this subject, along with master’s and doctoral degrees in nursing and pharmacy. These healthcare programs require in-person clinical hours at a healthcare facility so experienced professionals can evaluate students.

Student Review Summary: Reviews of Utica University are sharply divided, but skew negative because many low-rated accounts describe disorganization, weak administrative support, and expensive online-heavy coursework that felt self-taught. The strongest complaints focus on unclear expectations, exams that did not match study materials, delayed faculty responses, refund and billing frustrations, and a sense that retention mattered less than tuition collection. Several reviewers also cite inconsistent quality across instructors, poor scheduling, and limited academic rigor in some areas. Positive reviewers consistently praise small classes, caring professors, hands-on labs, clinical preparation, flexibility for working adults, and programs that improved after feedback, especially when tutoring and faculty support were actively used.

I should start with the good things about Stony Brook. You'll get the most out of this school if you're focused on academics, driven, and don't mind missing out on some/most aspects of a wilder college life (though you may appreciate the sketchy frat... Read More

The negative aspects of Stony Brook are its remoteness and its amenities (or lack thereof). It's a big commuter school and in a quieter area - it will be very hard to get around without a car, and parking is ridiculously expensive (last I heard). There are county buses, which are free for students on weekends, and a few shuttles, including weekend shuttles for grocery shopping. But as of 2024, you were required to pay for the stupidly overpriced on-campus meal plan in your freshman year, and for every year after depending on where you were housed. This brings me to the issue of amenities: there are a variety of food options but most of them are pricey if you're not on the dining plan, and food quality is often poor and even dangerous. There are good parts and bad parts. As for housing: there are some dorm buildings that are actually suitable for human habitation, but many of them have mold and/or insects. It's also very hard to end up with roommates that match your preferences, and Stony Brook makes it very difficult to change dorms. Keep in mind that these are common issues at a lot of universities, but the thing is, with Stony Brook it's physically harder to get away. The campus is small and there's not a whole lot to do there or in surrounding area; however, there is a train station on campus where you can get to NYC in hours, which is a cool perk.

However, it is more than possible to have good experiences here if you're willing to put up with that. There are fun campus events, some beautiful sights and places to hang out, and the main academic mall has a bustling energy on weekdays that feels perfect for a college campus. You won't have a problem finding friends if you're willing to put yourself out there. Especially if you're an introverted academic, you'll get a lot out of this place, and have a fairly valuable degree to boot. We also have our dramas, campus lore, and cool buildings to explore late at night (check out the physics building).

Student Review Summary: Reviewers describe Stony Brook as a strong academic value with rigorous coursework, knowledgeable professors, and clear career payoff, especially through research, hospital access, internships, teaching opportunities, and respected name recognition. Many say the school rewards self-starters: resources exist, but support often must be actively sought. Students frequently praise diversity, affordability, online flexibility, helpful faculty in smaller or specialized settings, and strong preparation for graduate study or employment. Recurring frustrations include very large introductory classes, uneven advising, weak administrative responsiveness, limited financial aid, expensive housing, commuter-school loneliness, quiet weekends, transportation hassles, and some departments feeling under-supported or overly focused on research over teaching.

Adelphi University () provides potential distance learners with undergraduate and graduate degree options. Bachelor’s students might opt for majors such as business, emergency services, liberal studies, or social science. There’s also an online 4 + 1 program in computer science that lets students earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years if they stay on track. Online master’s degree choices include art education, nursing, emergency management, and healthcare informatics.

Why we like them: AU is a fairly diverse place to learn. Historically underrepresented groups compose more than 40% of Adelphi’s student body, and more than two-thirds of enrollees are women. Students from these backgrounds tend to perform better and feel more comfortable in representative environments. In addition, AU has a low 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, which leaves instructors more time and energy to devote to each student and can help foster good relationships between learners and teachers.

The campus is frequently described as beautiful, safe, intimate, and easy to navigate, with enough activities to build community. St. Joseph’s University - New York () features online degrees in a variety of disciplines. Undergraduate students might choose a bachelor’s degree in human resources, criminal justice, health administration, psychology, or organizational management. Some master’s options include business administration, human services leadership, and management programs. Several of these degrees have concentrations to help graduate students tailor their program to their interests.

Why we like them: SJUNY has a section of its website devoted specifically to financial aid help for online students. Students also value networking, alumni connections, campus involvement, and friendships. Criticism centers on inconsistency: some describe certain instructors as rigid, dull, or slow with grading, while others note dated technology and limited course availability tied to the school’s smaller size.

Canisius University () features a number of fully online master’s degree programs in education and sports and health. Study subjects include respiratory care, sport administration, educational technologies and emerging media, community and school health, and teaching English to speakers of other languages. Although it is a Jesuit Catholic school, CU doesn’t require students to adhere to any religion.

Why we like them: CU has a low student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1. This environment can lead to more interaction among learners and instructors as they get to know each other better. Professors also tend to have more time to help students with individual concerns when the ratio is low. In addition, tenured or tenure-track faculty teach CU courses rather than teaching assistants or graduate students with less experience.

While I attended the name was changed to Prism. There are so many reasons I became very unhappy there but was STUCK.

3. There were students who would cause problems, fight and have alot of drama around them and instead of leave the school they would allow this to continue. No probation, no discipline for those who were trouble maker.

4. Phone calls were not returned in a timely manner or were just ignored.
With all of this and more that would go on at this school I stayed. If it wasn't for one of my instuctors, D K, who would make classes interesting and fun, I would have dropped out and tried to find another school. D showed his students respect and proper instruction on many areas of the Paralegal field. He would also bring in interesting speakers. His instruction permitted great informaiton. It was good that D was a lawyer so that he was speaking from experience and how he would have things done for himself at his firm. Out of all my instructors, he is the only one who when you weren't having a class with him he was still interested in you and seeing you in the hall he would great you and ask how your class was going. He we always there for extra help. D was there for me when I needed to take a class on a Saturday (which Prism didn't usually have) but D was there to to help me get a couple of classes completed on a Saturday. If the school only had him as a tacher I would go back and get my Associates in Paralegal Studies.

So to start with I really liked the instructors and the curriculum. I went for Medical Assisting and graduated in 2007 with honors and pass my certification exam with high scores. So why am I working at a coffee shop? Career services is a complete joke. I have no clue is the even sent out my resume. For my internship I was placed with a dialysis company where I was not allowed to use any of the skills I learned in school, I was only allowed to watch.

I was told by Manager of the place that he would... Read More

The only thing I can give this school credit for wasting my money and the monthly payment to get out of debt with nothing to show for my hard work.

I was in a car accident that has affected my dominate arm. (I am left handed.) As a result I was asked to make up 6 exams, which I did. Ten points were deleted from all of my exams plus an additional 15% were deducted because I was not in class. I was told I had passed. My ending GPA 1.96.

I initally went to the school for sonography and was told I would fail the practical part of the course because my pictures were not clear enough. The whole time I did this with my right hand when again I am left... Read More

I had a great experience at Full Sail. I learned a lot. It’s very informative and helpful. I look forward to getting my bachelors degree in CyberSecurity here. Then after that, I will be able to tell you how it impacted my career. I absolutely would recommend Full Sail To anybody that wanted to experience online schooling.

Most of the graduate classes are taught by the same teachers I had as an undergraduate, making it easier to build relationships with them. The classes are only offered once a year so if you miss enrollment or something happens you have to wait a full year to continue. The program is very competitive.

The online portion of the class was extremely engaging and interactive. Instructors graded assignments almost immediately and provided ample feedback (they also encouraged me to continue my education). The assignments were challenging, even for a graduate of an ivy league college. The high level of competition among my classmates pushed me to raise my academic standards. The program includes a teaching practicum which has proven to be the most valuable portion so far. I would recommend Teacher's College... Read More

I love the graduate program because it is online so I can work at my pace during the week since I am in the Dietetic Intern at the same time. The teachers are quick to answer your questions and love to help you if you ask. The cons is the workload can be a lot some weeks since I work 40 hours a week on top of assignments that my internship requires of me. This did helped advance my time management skills in order to be successful in my classes.

This school bills on the semester rather than the classes you actually take. Meaning that if you start a course and decide its not for you, You will be billed for that SEMESTER, not the one or two lousy courses you took. I used my entire GI bill here and had an overall pleasant and challenging experience for Computer Science. However when I found out my GI Bill would only cover half the course of my certificate program I stopped hoping I wouldnt be charged, Long story short I am holding a bill for... Read More

It's one of the best rated schools in the area and nationally. DUQ is adult centered, meaning they understand the students are actually working adults with families and responsibilities. They understand life happens and have the flexibility for those life events. The resources available are amazing to help all students to succeed. DUQ offers flexibility of online programs, campus close enough to utilize library and other resources.

I really like my school at Walden University. For an online program, they have a great cirrocumuli and the support is great. As a con, I wish they would help assist with the residencies expenses.

George Mason University offers a great Nursing program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The material is appropriate and the professors are knowledgable. Many classes in the graduate program are offered online which makes it very convenient. I have enjoyed this program thus far. The only area of improvement I would suggest is better communication and support from the administration side.
